Here we go again, er, again. Citing numerous sources and contacts, EDGE has published some rather saucy information regarding the difference in power between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
The article states that Sony's next generation machine is around 50 per cent faster than its competitor, while multiple development sources describe the gap in performance as "significant" and "obvious".
Putting the claims into context, one developer told EDGE that a game running on a PS4 development kit hits 30FPS in 1920x1080, while on an Xbox One kit, the frame rate drops to "20-something" in 1600x900. “Xbox One is weaker and it’s a pain to use its ESRAM,” the contact added.
The article admittedly goes on to say how other sources state that they still need to explore the ins and outs of each console, but the publication still concludes the piece by writing that the PS4 will indeed be the "more capable" console at launch.

@ShogunRok I don't think Edge took into account the Xbone's secret sauce & power of the cloud. Those developers are obviously not telling the truth. Sony fanboys for sure
@MadchesterManc HAHAHA..You just predicted Albert Penello next response....lol
Holy ****... that sounds bad frame drops to 20 something and this gen has just to start.
Can this idiotic media leave Sony alone please they don't need this type of publicity right now while giving MS ammunition to talk out of their asses again. I just want to know myself how amazing the system can be coming Nov 15.
" the PS4 will indeed be the "more capable" console at launch." All i need to hear.
This story has been brewing for months and is obviously true. Microsoft decided to take a page out of Nintendo's book and be more profitable per unit at launch. (Or at least selling at less of a loss).
This was a bad strategy.
Sonys been on the ball with the PS4 after the PS3, Sony also knew thay messed up with the PS3. So started to do postmortems on the PS3, as thay went to work on the PS4 in 2008. Fast forwards to the PS4 announcement, Microsoft wasn't ready it took months for them to announcement there console, and thay haven't been ready ever since.
@banacheck Yeah, I am somewhat shocked at how Microsoft has handled everything. If you asked me at the beginning of the year I would have never predicted this and I thought both were going to bring their "A" game.
Lol well it's MS's third console, so just like ps3, it's inefficient and awkward for devs. Sony will always have an entire generation on MS, so it's unfair, really, to say they're in the same category. Poor guys are tryin' real hard tho!
Wow, the internet is blowing up over this, haha.
I'm not ashamed to admit that when I read this (on another website at first, but I can't keep away from this link on anything!) I **** myself laughing.
Way to go Sony!
I lift my cup to Sony tonight!!!
If there was any doubt, it's gone now. I think MS shouldn't have tried to defend the One's specs earlier like they too. It sounded a bit desperate and everyone that isn't MS says the PS4 is more powerful.
The statement quoted here left out the fact that this was in reference to games not optimized for either console. And usually, a game will be optimized to one or the other. No telling how much of a difference optimization will make. But really, tbh, I'm tired of these power debates. So it's less powerful, we get it. Do we really need to stroke our egos with that fact every week? Power is just one miniscule factor in the bigger picture- gaming journalists should stop focusing on just this one detail.
PS3 and Xbox 360 are considerable "less powerful" and they're still viable consoles with great games. Wii U isn't as powerful as either of it's next gen brethren and it's still a viable console with great games. Point it, power doesn't make the console, so why do they keep acting like it's the be all end all of the console's legitimacy?
It's the PAYWALL that irks me with the Xbox, because I don't buy into the whole monthly subscription thing. I'll never buy into PS+ or Xbox Live. And while I'm fairly pissed off that after everything's said and done, the console that ended up adding restrictions is, ironically, the PS4 with paying for online, at least I can record video and use other features. With Xbox One I can do NOTHING. Just pop in discs, that's it. I'm curious to know what would happen with a game like Destiny if I'm not an Xbox Live or PS+ member? If I can't play that game because of "online paywall restriction" on EITHER console because the game forces an internet connection, I'm selling the console.
@JaxonH
I am tired of micro's strategy, which is take 90 cents of every dollar earned and buy timed exclusives and dlc with COD and BATTLEFIELD. Sony on the other hand takes that money and creates incredible new ip's. micro did exactly what I thought they would with that kinect also, they gimped the system specs to add that worthless piece of crap that NO one wants. Now you have to spend an extra 100 dollars to get the xbox one and that is just playing dirty. I truly hope microsoft burns to the ground so sony and nintendo can do what they do best. My point is every little thing that encourages someone not to buy an xbox one makes me feel that there is hope, and I let out a little chuckle inside.
@JaxonH Dude regardless of the paywall of playing online at least PS+ gives out more than MS Xbox Live does so i'm happy on the right side. On the left side I was disappointed too about paying but $5 a month isn't bad for a person like me that doesn't play online 24/7 so i'm good but FTP games they giving out is still FREE online regardless of plus or not so I still will be gaming online. But I agree with your opinion but every system got some stupid DRM type even Nintendo why I was so disappointed because they says no to Region Free which probably isn't a deal breaker to you but to me and the rest of the minority that import Japanese games it was. I sadly sold my system later down the line because of lack of games and Nintendo not listening to their core audience (only listening to their Nintendo fanbase) but I'll wait later to buy another Wii U when they get more variety and have more support for everybody.
All ive done is laugh at Microsoft since unveiling their tvbox. Needless to say, it continues. lulz! On a serious note, they're making it impossible to respect or even like them as a company right now. Even Windows 8 sucks. I hate apple with all my being. Im forced to stick with Windows 7 or switch to Linux. It's not a good yeqr for Microsoft at all. You know they're feeling it from all angles.
Xbone has even less chance than the Wii U has at beating PS4
@JaxonH Power isn't necessary for good games, but it can open up new possibilities and can make for some better games at times. And another question, why skip reporting this facor, it's not like they are reporting on this over other things. The focus is just because there is that much if this type of news.
I just have one thing to say...when the next last of us type game is revealed by naughty dog on PS4, whatever that may be. KABOOM!!!
Not really surprising considering Sony also had the most powerful console this gen. In the end though it's about the games and it took PS3 a while to get going. Hopefully PS4 being an easier machine to work with means better games out of the gate that also take advantage of the hardware.
@DeHorror1975
It's not like Sony doesn't participate in this strategy. Look at Ubi's games, look at GTA V, all have some kind of DLC deal with Sony so if that's a strategy you despise, Sony isn't exactly free of it. Further, while MS may be a scummy company, Nintendo and Sony aren't exactly saint like either, all do crappy things and don't think for a second that Sony wouldn't be going down the same road as MS did with that DRM stuff had consumers not clearly told these companies that that stuff is bs. Sony can say all it wants that it never considered that, if it were true, there wouldn't have been any questions about it going into E3. In the end, I hope MS gets it together because rooting for any of these companies to disappear isn't good for the industry.
@Gamer83 that is true, but it is not the primary reason people buy a playstation. People buy a ps3 for the games, the buy a 360 for timed dlc, it has been saving microsofts butt for years now
@DeHorror1975
See I can't fully agree with that. I do think PS3 has proven to be the best console this gen, but it took time and from 2006-2008, X360 was the best and it wasn't even close. So, to me, saying people buy a 360 for DLC isn't giving credit where it's due. You don't have to like MS as a company, I don't like MS, but the 360 has a fantastic game library. It did slow down massively on the exclusive front as MS started focusing more on Kinect and non-gaming apps but there was a stretch of a few years where the console kicked as much a$$ as any console ever released. I bought one about a few days after it launched and never regretted it. It was a massive step up from Xbox Original which had a few standouts but an overall average at best library.
@Gamer83 It kicked my a$$ too by buying 10 systems from the RROD BS lol but I agree with you regardless X360 was a kick ass system this gen but when I finally got my hands on a PS3 that was then and now. I loved that system even more than my 360 but I still play the 360 time to time over the games being sensational and for the XBOX original that system was made for my retro gaming device (aka my system was modded).
My strategy seems to be to buy all the consoles in a generation as they drop in price and the exclusives gets to tempting to bare.
And I guess I'll be doing that this generation too but I for one wish the Xbox One and the PS4 where equal in performance so that the multiplatform games don't suffer too much in development and we get optimized versions for both platforms without sacrificing too much either way. Some games work better with xbox controller and others with ps3's and some games only work on the WiiU.
Freedom of choice.
@Gamer83
I agree with you, I guess more to the point I feel micro was concerned about the kinect and maintaining timed DLC than they were making some great games. There were a few yrs there where the 360 was no doubt the better console, especially online. Micro lost me with kinect, forcing me to buy it was the last straw. I'm out!
@DeHorror1975
You're right, the Xbox 360 post-Kinect under the 'leadership' of Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer wasn't half as good as it was in from 06 to even 09, and at the same time, starting in 09, Sony was pumping out awesome exclusive after awesome exclusive and third parties were finally getting to grips with the PS3 so it eventually overtook the 360. I feel like the Xbox team may be slowly turning the corner though. Its first-year lineup for the Xbox One is outstanding. Where the system is 2015 and beyond, who knows. I think the first few years will be great but MS does have a lot of work to do to win back some people it lost with some of the decision making over the course of this year and maybe even going as far back as 2010 when Kinect was introduced and a lot of focus was also put on non-gaming apps. Really though, the main point I was trying to make is that I don't think it's fair to judge 360 just on what happened in the second half of this gen, we have to be fair and judge it as a whole and the first half of this gen was so good that the 360 overall is still an excellent console and one I'd recommend to somebody on a tight budget who's just looking to get into games now.
