Obligatory promotional art

Consider this your last warning: there are spoilers in this article. If you haven’t finished The Last of Us yet, then you may want to consider tapping your browser’s obliging ‘back’ button right about now. Have you done it yet? Can we stop waffling? Seriously, if you’re still reading this then we can’t be held accountable for ruining the title. Run like a Clicker at the Olympic Games.

Is it safe? Phew. Naughty Dog mentioned in a recent Reddit question and answer that it intends to detail The Last of Us’ original ending at a PAX panel in Seattle later this month, but it’s already pulled back the curtain on the general gist. Creative director Neil Druckmann uploaded the following image to his Twitter page overnight, which raises some interesting questions.

Alternate Ending

It shows love interest Tess torturing a tied-up Joel – perhaps about to slit the protagonist’s throat. Those of you that have already played the game will know that the determined diva actually dies during the course of the campaign, so it’s likely that the developer originally envisioned a different story arc for the character.

If we had to guess, though, we suspect that she’s not too impressed with the bearded hero’s decision to save Ellie in this sketch. We’ll find out more at the end of the month, but this is definitely a fascinating glimpse at what could have been. Were you happy with the ending to the PlayStation 3 exclusive?
