Super starry eyes
We know that Housemarque’s set to announce its first PS4 project at some point during GamesCom, and we’d be gobsmacked if that didn’t happen during the platform holder’s press conference. The Finnish developer – which is actually working on two games for the next generation console – has said that it will only show one of its titles, which we expect to be its previously announced Super Stardust HD successor. In a recent interview, the company teased that it’s looking at ways of expanding the online aspects of its games, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the title didn’t have some kind of competitive or co-operative multiplayer aspects.
We also can’t help but wonder whether the Japanese giant may have a bigger announcement to make regarding its partnership with the developer. We’re not expecting the firm to have purchased the outfit, but we certainly wouldn’t be surprised if it had signed the company to a long-term exclusivity arrangement similar to Novarama and Tarsier. Considering that the studio has indicated that it enjoys concentrating on a single platform, we think that there’s a good chance of the team going PlayStation exclusive for the foreseeable future. It would certainly beat cranking out Angry Birds ports for Activision, anyway.
The power of four
Since riding out of E3 on cloud nine, it’s been a quiet couple of months for the PS4. The system’s continued to perform extremely well, exceeding pre-order allocations in Europe and North America, but the platform holder’s been uncharacteristically quiet. While its closest competitor has been busy changing many of its policies and putting out as much positive press as possible, Sony’s largely maintained its silence, and let Microsoft’s own missteps and knee-jerk reactions dominate the headlines. That’s allowed the Japanese giant’s console to fall to the wayside a touch, something that we expect it to rectify at GamesCom.
We predict that we’ll be seeing lots more of all of the firm’s previously announced games. We already know that Evolution Studios is planning to debut a new DriveClub demo on the showfloor, which will need to impress in the wake of the game’s weak E3 demo. Sucker Punch has also been hinting at some kind of inFAMOUS: Second Son reveal, which is likely to encompass a new set of powers for hero Delsin Rowe. But we’ve personally got our fingers crossed for some gameplay footage of Ready at Dawn’s upcoming The Order: 1886, which made a brief appearance during E3. Of course, there’s also a chance that the firm may announce some new first-party titles, too, with the likes of London Studio yet to reveal anything for the next generation platform.
TV, TV, TV
Sony’s focused on the gaming qualities of the PS4 thus far, but the company’s stressed multiple times that it considers the entertainment aspects to be equally important. With the device’s hardcore status already solidified – and likely to be boosted at GamesCom – we suspect that it may dedicate a portion of its press conference to some of the broader uses of the next generation console, specifically in relation to the European market. The confirmation of catch-up services such as the BBC iPlayer and 4OnDemand would be well received, as would some clarification regarding the future of applications such as VidZone.
It would also be nice to get a proper look at the console’s user interface. Aside from a few seconds of the development kit and a cheesy lifestyle trailer, we’re still yet to see a proper demo of the console’s main menus and system-level functions. A walkthrough of the console’s dashboard may seem like a drab inclusion during a press conference, but this is information that we’ve been craving since the platform’s debut in February. A more detailed look at Remote Play would also be welcome, if only to allay any fears regarding the quality of the experience when streaming titles from the PS4 to the Vita.
Annihilate the ISA
Despite being the flagship launch title, we can’t help but feel that Killzone: Shadow Fall has fallen out of the spotlight in recent weeks. The title’s oversaturated introduction was one of the highlights of the platform holder’s colossal PlayStation Meeting press conference in February, but the title endured a rather quiet E3 by contrast. We suspect that that won’t be repeated at GamesCom, with Guerrilla Games almost certain to pull back the curtain on the first-person shooter’s hotly anticipated multiplayer mode. In addition to being playable on the show floor, we’re fully expecting Sony to spend a few moments demoing the online component during its presentation in Cologne.
While Killzone 3 refined many aspects of the franchise’s multiplayer, many felt that it lost a lot of the soul that was present in Killzone 2. Fortunately, the second game’s lead multiplayer designer is back on board for the PS4 sequel, so that should please long-term fans of the franchise. In addition to the typical array of Deathmatch and Warzone modes, we’re actually hoping for an expansion of the brilliant Operations playlist. This mixed objectives mode implemented some very simple narrative elements, but was restricted to just three maps in the series’ most recent instalment. We’d like to see it expanded in Shadow Fall.
You’ll be able to buy the PS4 on...
It feels like an eternity since the PS4 was first announced, but we’ll finally get a date during Sony’s GamesCom press conference. The company has said that it intends to share “release plans” during the show, with both Europe and North America in line to receive the system this year. The platform holder’s been pretty coy with timeframes thus far, meaning that the console could theoretically deploy at any point before the end of 2013. We suspect that it will be targeting October or November, though, for maximum impact.
Given that the manufacturer’s trumped Microsoft in almost every area of the next generation race thus far, we wouldn’t be surprised if it beat the firm to store shelves, too. As speculated in an earlier article, the 29th October looks like a solid choice, as it’s the day that both Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 are set to launch in North America. However, the 12th November (formatted 11/12/13 in the United States) would certainly provide a great branding opportunity, and still offer ample time to replenish stock ahead of the all-important Black Friday shopping window. Whichever date the platform holder plumps up for, though, we’ll know by this time next week.
What are you hoping to see during Sony’s big GamesCom press conference next week? Do you want the focus to be on the PS4, or would you like the Vita and PS3 to share the limelight, too? Wow... If that is all for vita... Dont get it. Maybe i need to stop buying vita games. Sony does not care.
Till this date; 2 vita's
and i think 30 or more games
@Sanquine It's all just speculation on my part. Having said that, I'm very happy with the Vita this year to be honest - there have been more games than I have time to play. I too would love the system to get a spate of massive blockbusters to propel its sales, too, but I'm not really sure what people want from the system anymore.
The fact that you own 30 games for the system suggests that Sony's probably doing something right with regards to software support... Maybe?
@get2sammyb. Im just hungry for games like persona, uncharted or tear away. More jrpg's. Freedom wars is a good start. Also more gravity rush
@Sanquine That's fair. I guess Gravity Rush 2 is a possibility actually, though they may save it for TGS.
i enjoyed reading this and now im even more excited for gamescon only 4 more days =)
@get2sammyb
Exactly, I can barely have time to play my backlog.
I guess some people are really playing the Vita in hardcore mode at home. Then it's expected to run out of AAA games in a short time. But if you play on the go, these games last a lot. And specially the small titles have an excellent replay-ability value.
@bjmartynhak 200 hours persona 4(4thplaythrough), about 60 hours soul sacrifice. Yeah hardcore
@Sanquine
0.O that's truly hardcore!
Persona 5 please! And a western one piece 2 release! Then I might stop picking up my 3ds and leaving my vita to collect dust and forget the time. Freedom wars is too far away.
There are definitely some spectacular titles out for the vita currently but it would be nice to know that there is more to come! Yeah you can rummage around and find info, but it would be excellent if they use this chance to make everyone know about them.
I think Disgaea D2 should receive an eventual port from the upcoming ps3 title. Demon Gaze, DanganRonpa coming soon too.
I think if they really want to tear the roof down... Announce they have acquired Atlus, then announce Persona 5 officially
@get2sammyb If they announced Gravity Rush 2, it would, to steal your words, "make me cream".
@sajoey Haha!
A PS4+Vita bundle announcement would be cool.
@sajoey LOL..
Most of this article looks like what I posted earlier, I like it.
I have faith that Sony has some big Vita announcements, hopefully a price drop accompanies the announcement. I really want to see more of Freedom Wars, PlayStation Vita Pets, Invizimals and I also hope Bend is working on something new.
@get2sammyb No but seriously, I loved Gravity Rush, it was the first game I bought for my Vita, and is the first and only game I've Platinum'd, so that would be kind of a big deal for me.
I voted for non-gaming features. I really want to know more about the viacom deal especially. Other than that I suppose I'm most interested in hearing about Killzone multiplayer and of course the release date.
Vita needs a PR overhaul. The sales aren't huge, but the fanbase is solid and average software purchases per system are amazing. Remarkably high actually.
So if the average person who buys the Vita, in fact, buys more games than on most systems, how can the available games be seen as a problem?
It isn't. This is a perception issue. People, on average, (not nuts like us) get sold on potential, but generally never put their money down on most of the games they bought the system for.
For a system to average a purported 10 games or so per user, one has to assume the catalogue is actually very healthy. What's missing is the dreamy talk of future games. This machine needs, announcements, a price drop and a gear shift, which includes stronger advertising and a tone that says: Vita has emerged from it's cocoon and has arrived in earnest.
@get2sammyb By the way, there's a glitch on here. I think this was posted a bit more than 0 seconds ago.
@Snorky Hey Snorky, how come you deleted me off of the PSN friends list? Did I do anything wrong that offended you? T_T
While I fully expect a lot of PS3 and Vita stuff they NEED to drop some games we have yet to hear about for PS4. With the PS4s release date being announced I expect some of the UI and other features to be further explained as well.
I don't think there's enough must-have games personally. As Sanquine stated, Sony doesn't seem to care. It appears they've silently backed away from the system, placing it's final hopes in marketing the Vita as a PS4 companion device. And 32gb memory cards are still $100- even on sale the lowest you'll find them for is $80, which is outrageous. I've been waiting since launch to buy one, but they've gotta get serious about being competitive with their prices.
I've owned my Vita twice as long as my Wii U, yet I only have 9 Vita games and 2 pre ordered as opposed to the 18 I have on Wii U with another 18 pre ordered. Heck, I've got 1/3 as many PS4 games pre ordered as I own for Vita, and that console's not even out yet. And half of the 9 Vita games I have, I only bought because the prices dropped like crazy. For example, I picked up Sonic Racing Transformed, Gravity Rush and Rayman Origins for $40 TOTAL, all brand new. I suspect that's why the attach rate is above average- the entire library is selling for pennies on the dollar right now. You can get a whole shelf full of Vita games for a little over $100. Not that I'm complaining or anything, I'm just pointing that out.
I mean, I love my Vita- it's absolutely terrific. I love it just as much as all my other consoles. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with Sony's response to Vita's poor sales, which has resulted in a pretty sparse upcoming lineup. They need to grab the bull by the horns, double down, and put all their AAA developers on Vita projects, and really give it all they've got.
As we can clearly see with Nintendo's Wii U, you can't force 3rd parties to make games for your system. But you CAN sway their minds and ease their worries by fully backing your own hardware. I mean, if Sony won't even back the Vita with their top developers, and is now shying away from development, why should 3rd parties support the system? Kind of a "if you don't believe in it, why should we?" scenario...
In any case, complaining doesn't change anything. So I'll buy my Killzone Mercenaries and my Final Fantasy X port this year, and just cross my fingers that fall 2014 will give us a considerably fuller lineup than this year is. And doubly cross my fingers for a Final Fantasy XII port to Vita- now THAT would be awesome (not really a fan of ports, but if ports are all publishers want to bring to the Vita, might as well make em the good ones)
Sony's not going to go all-in on Vita. Not with PS3 finally profitting and PS4 just mere months away, we all have to stop living in dreamland as far as the Vita is concerned. It's a good system with plenty of good, though niche, titles. It's never going to be a huge hit and the only possible way to attempt to make it one at this point would be to sacrifice some PS4 support and that is just not going to happen.
@Gamer83 dreamland? Deamland xD see my comment
@Sanquine
Just fixed my post, thanks.
Vita price drop, Vita price drop, Vita price drop, Vita price drop, Vita price drop, Vita price drop, Vita price drop...please?
If they made it full connection to PS4 (not unlike the wii U (spit!)), I would buy one today, I dont have time for handheld gaming (but respect people that do), everyone to their own, but a PS4/Vita Bundle = A super special Joypad that goes beyond anything the XBONE or WIIU could ever possibly achieve in the next year at least. ;D
