You May Be Able to Play Battlefield 4 with a Mouse and Keyboard on PS4

Next generation, classic controls

Sony’s impressively ergonomic DualShock 4 controller may be snugger than a Cheryl Cole branded onesie, but it’s still unlikely to appeal to elitists. Those gamers that would rather play with rusty chainsaws than dual analogue sticks are much more likely to be wooed by WASD support – and Battlefield 4 on the PlayStation 4 may yet take advantage of the frequently requested feature.

Asked specifically about mouse and keyboard compatibility by AusGamers, producer Aleksander Grøndal hinted that it’s a possibility on the PS4. “We have mouse and keyboard support for the PC obviously, but I can’t speak now specifically for next generation consoles,” he said. “But if it makes sense in the Battlefield universe, for a Battlefield game, we’ll consider it.”

The PlayStation 3 famously included support for the spreadsheet tools, so we suspect that similar functionality will be extended to the Japanese giant’s impending platform. The big question is: will developers actually take advantage of it this time around? DICE seems game – but considering support and actually implementing it are two very different propositions.

I can already hear the cries of people demanding mouse and keyboard support be removed.

@Clamedeus Yeah I've got nothing against it. Some people are great with a controller, some are great with a traditional PC setup. But we all know how competitive people get online...

Man..
I remember back in 2007 when Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 shipped with mouse and keyboard support, and also mod support. The M&K support was well handled too, with admins fully able to disable the support for gamepad only play, and this was clearly listed in the server browser. The game had a bit of a small install base so it did kinda split it a bit, but in a game as massive as B4 this would be a total non issue.

This was a major thing for me, I saw what I thought was a glimpse of the future. At the time my PS3 put my PC to shame and I was glad to have cutting edge visuals with my preferred control method and not have to spend 1000's on a gaming PC.

Fast forward to the present day and that game was a total one off. Please let the new generation be the future of console gaming I though I was getting 7 years ago.

@ShogunRok It's totally fine as long as admins can control this, as in Controller only servers VS M&K only (or even mixed). A game like BF4 there will be enough servers of each type to cater to all.

There is no reason not to include this feature from our point of view.

Yeah and it's a tried and tested idea to boot, Epic did it back in 2007 and it worked great. That year I had a PS3 that could run Linux and play games that supported PC made mods and M&K controllers. I was so happy with these turn of events.

I doubt anyone at Dice is reading a small blog site like this, but if you are, M&K support, pretty please!
