Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

Ubisoft’s delightful dayglo spin-off Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is not an April Fools’ Day joke – it’s a real product coming to the PlayStation Network on 1st May. The first-person adventure depicts the plight of Sgt. Rex Power Colt, a cyborg commando voiced by Terminator and Aliens star Michael Biehn. The game’s set in the near future (2007, to be precise) and deals with a world plunged into chaos after a nuclear strike on North America.

You won’t need a copy of last year’s likeable Far Cry 3 to play the eighties escapade – this is a standalone release linked only to its predecessor by its open world setting and gameplay mechanics. Once again you’ll be capturing outposts, only this time they’ll be controlled by a rogue military group known as the Omega Force. You’ll also be able to go out in pursuit of wildlife, which takes the form of robotic reptiles known as Blood Dragons. And, yes, there’ll be dinosaurs that inexplicably shoot lasers out of their eyes.

The publisher’s yet to confirm a price just yet, but Steam listings suggest that you should expect to pay around $14.99 for the game. You can watch the title’s first trailer in the space below, which shows off the adventure’s VHS-inspired scanlines and intentionally wonky dialogue. We’re extremely excited for this, but we are worried that the joke could get a little old. Still, Far Cry 3 was amazing, so we’re on board for more of that alone.

Update: Ubisoft's confirmed that the game's due out on 30th April in North America.
