Japanese Sales Charts: Dragon's Dogma Takes Off

Posted by Sammy Barker

Flying start

Dragon’s Dogma got off to a roaring start in Japan, selling a whopping 302,040 units during its first week on sale. The impressive numbers make it the fastest selling new IP of the generation in the region.

Sadly, the title did nothing to increase the PS3’s hardware sales. Sony’s home system mustered just 14k units, a minor increase over its 12k tally the week prior. Meanwhile PSP and Vita remained static, selling a measly 10k and 6k units respectively.

Despite the poor numbers, there was one new Vita release in the software top 20. SEGA’s Samurai & Dragons managed to secure a spot in 17th after selling 6k copies.

I think Japan is the one who is becoming more interested in generic Western fantasy worlds rather than the West.

@Mickeymac Generic? I haven't seen half the monsters in Dragon's Dogma in Skyrim, Two Worlds, Dragon Age etc.
Dragon's Dogma takes a lot of it's influences in terms of big monsters from Norse Mythology, something most Western RPGs actually don't. Whilst it does have the traditional goblins and dragons a like it's rare you see some of the monsters seen in Dragon's Dogma like Chimera's in open world western RPGs.
