Video game fans can be a fickle bunch. After years of campaigning for the demise of bi-yearly summer spin-offs, now gamers are starting to question why the upcoming UEFA Euro 2012 tournament isn’t getting its own standalone game.

For those that haven’t been keeping track, EA announced earlier this week that its Euro 2012 offering would come in the form of a premium DLC pack for FIFA 12. According to the publisher, that decision was made due to the continued popularity of this year’s release.

Communications manager Steve Frost revealed:

We felt this was the best way to extend that experience and deliver fresh new content to our fans.

We expect footy fans will want the opportunity to play UEFA Euro 2012 and experience what it takes to win the tournament under the same conditions their favourite nation will face in the weeks ahead.

We expect that some fans who may not have FIFA 12 will want to play Euro 2012 and therefore purchase both, but the bigger opportunity for us is to offer our loyal and passionate FIFA fans new content.

And we expect that EA will release a brand new version of FIFA 12 ahead of the tournament with a download code for the Euro 2012 content bundled in. Who wants to bet?
