Less Sonic, more Seaman

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing was a great game, make no mistake about it. The racing was top-tier, the netcode was great and the fan-service was good enough to make old-school fans like ourselves giddy. But while it was nice getting our hands on with Beat and B.D. Joe after so many years – we kind of wished Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing was more self-referential. Where was the Space Harrier track for example? Or the docks from Shenmue? SEGA has such a rich history that it was sad to not see it get fully explored.

Thankfully, it looks like the developer’s going to take the series for a second lap. News coming out of Kotaku suggests that there’s a sequel to the mascot racer on the cards, with toys for the karter spotted at the New York Toy Fair this weekend. According to the website, a booth attendant confirmed the existence of the sequel, though SEGA is keeping schtum for the time being.

We can only hope that the game gets a little deeper with character and track selection this time. Playable Segata Sanshiro? Yes please.

With LittleBigPlanet Karting also announced though, it looks like 2012’s going to be a great year for taking it to the track.
