With the PS Vita now out in Japan, the sales-age starts.

Famitsu reports that Enterbrain recorded 321,407 PS Vita consoles were sold within the system's first 48 hours on the market.

In the same period the Nintendo 3DS scooped up 371,326, but Sony will be not be concerned as long as PS Vita sales remain consistent. The Nintendo 3DS dropped off a cliff almost immediately after release earlier in the year, forcing Nintendo to slash the system's price.

Perhaps more positively, the PlayStation Vita outperformed the PSP's launch sales, which moved around 166,074 on its first day.

While the system itself didn't sell out, memory cards did. Reports online claim that there are currently no 16GB and 32GB memory sticks available in Japan. Apparently the software tie to PS Vita hardware purchases was almost 1:1 too, meaning few people left the store without a game to play on their new system.

It's not the sprint out of the gate we'd hoped for, but it's important to keep some perspective. 321k units is still a strong debut for the system, and Enterbrain predicts that it will hit 1.4 million units within the month. Not too shabby at all.
