Little Deviants Is Just One Of The Titles Set To Take Advantage Of PlayStation Vita's Augmented Reality Features.

Sony has been experimenting with augmented reality in games for years — so it's really no surprise to see Sony double down on the technology for PlayStation Vita.

During its Tokyo Game Show keynote, Sony confirmed that PlayStation Vita will not need a 'marker card' in order to use its augmented reality features. Traditionally — in games like Eye Pet and Invizimals — players are required to place a card on a surface in order for the AR to work correctly. But Vita uses Markerless AR, which does away with cards completely. It allows you to point the device at any object and enjoy the benefits of augmented reality, allowing you to move around polygonal objects — Sony demonstrated with the Ape from Ape Escape — and zoom in and out on them.

But while cards won't be necessary for every experience, Vita is also capable of Wide Area Augmented Reality, which allows you to track multiple cards across an entire table top. You can imagine a strategy game being particularly immersive in this way.

We're just waiting for the inevitable Invizimals announcement, because we really feel like that franchise has the potential to blow-up on PlayStation Vita. It has to be in development.
