It's happening

Skyhook, a leading developer of global tracking and positioning services whose name sounds unfortunately reminiscent of the fictional Terminator-producing corporation SkyNet, has implemented its Core Engine GPS system into everything from netbooks and tablets to smartphones and cameras. Next the company will be stuffing its global tracking and positioning tech into PlayStation’s upcoming handheld, the NGP.

Skyhook says it will bring the “superior location capabilities” of its Core Engine GPS system to the NGP, which combines “Wi-Fi, cellular, and GPS readings to produce a single, accurate location quickly and in all environments,” enabling gamers to “enjoy location-aware games and social applications by providing the most precise, reliable, and fastest location information available.”

Hopefully we can turn the feature off if we want, because not everyone wants to broadcast the fact that they've been playing Little Deviants at the free Wi-Fi at McDonald’s for three hours on a sick day.
