Call Of Duty: Black Ops Smashed Entertainment Launch Records.

The Treyarch developed shooter eclipsed Modern Warfare 2's sales records,  scoring the world's largest entertainment launch with opening day revenue of $360 million in the US and UK alone.

The total destroyed Modern Warfare 2's margin of $310 million over the same period according to Activision's internal sources. Apparently Black Ops whipped up 5.6 million sales in the US and UK over its first day on sale, a considerably larger margin than Modern Warfare 2's 4.7 million.

“There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million,” said Activision gaffer (and industry punch-bag) Bobby Kotick.

“The game’s success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the finest game that Treyarch has ever made and raises the bar for online gameplay by delivering the deepest and most intense Call of Duty experience yet. The Call of Duty franchise has over 25 million players around the world that are engaged in billions of hours of online gameplay, and we are committed to supporting them with new content and features on a more frequent and regular basis.”

Call Of Duty: Black Ops is actually really good. We're enjoying it. Does it deserve sales of that proportion? Probably not, but hey, fair play to Activision; they've found a winning formula and now they're going to milk it.
