Apparently It's Hard Updating Older Games Into 3D. Duh.

Sony. You know, you develop your game in high definition and then you have to render it twice. Difficult. Still, speaking to OPM magazine, Sony's Simon Benson was keen not to rule-out any future updates.

“I’m sure we will [retrofit more games with 3D], as adding 3D to a game can make it a whole new experience,” he said. "[But] retrofitting 3D is actually harder than building 3D into a game from the outset.

"One of the big issues is that all of the game assets were designed to work with only one HD output. Being able to render them twice to make a 3D output can be a challenge.

"Also, the game interfaces are often designed to only work in 2D. The process used [to] covert the games varies greatly… so there isn’t really a ‘one size fits all’ solution.”

Sony's already "retro fitted" 3D into the likes of PAIN, Super Stardust HD and Wipeout HD, all of which come packaged with one of Sony's new 3D Bravia TVs. We don't expect them to update many older games though, mainly because they're presumably going to have a whole slew of new 3D content to show at E3.
