Sounds Like Mortal Kombat's Heading Back To Its Roots.

The game's in development at Ed Boon's newly named NetherRealm Studios.

The new Mortal Kombat will bring the series back to its 2D heritage (at last), with a "triumphant return to the series’ mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic." Awesome. The fan favourite Fatality will make a return, with the whole thing rendered in a brand-new graphics engine. Warner are also promising new gameplay features including a tag-team mode and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game".

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”

We can't wait either, Mr. Boon. Expect more at E3.
