Happy Birthday To Yaaaaa... Happy Birthday!

That's right, the PSP is five years old in the US today, and has since mustered 17 million units in the US alone. Pretty amazing numbers considering it's Sony's first venture into the handheld gaming market.

“Five years ago, PlayStation had yet to break into the portable market,” said SCEA vice prez Peter Dille.

“Today, the PSP system is a well-established handheld platform that continuously redefines portable entertainment with quality that’s unparalleled. As PSP celebrates its fifth anniversary, the best is yet to come. We’re very excited about the vibrant 2010 lineup and are committed to continuing to offer entertainment experiences and immersive gameplay only possible on the PlayStation platform.”

We reckon it's about time Sony started talking about the PSP2, and we hope they've got some neat ideas up their sleeve to strengthen the Portable arm of their business. Until then, we'll continue to enjoy our PSPs. Here's hoping the future includes portable trophies, eh?
