Playstation Motion Controller Will Launch In The Spring Alongside A Range Of Games.

While Nintendo have been consistently criticized for not appealing to their key fanbase, Microsoft appear to be heading in a similar direction. Sony on the other hand appear to be reiterating the fact that their motion controller can be used in core experiences - something which is in the very least reassuring.

Talking with developers yesterday Sony stated the controller would launch in Spring 2010 alongside a "range of first-party and third-party content." They pitched the controller as functional "with any games across all genres from casual to core."

The controller will come with rumble integrated and they boast - surely in a nod to Microsoft's Natal - that the "face-tracking and head-tracking capability already in the PS3 SDK" will offer developers "powerful tools for new types of user interaction." Sony also stated the controller could be used in tandem with the Playstation Eye's voice recognition functions. They also stated that the Playstation Eye could track four controllers at once.

Talking about the tech once more, Sony claimed that the new technology does come at a cost to the Playstation 3's horsepower, claiming the "motion-tracking library has some SPU overhead and has an impact on memory as well, although these will be minimized."

Sony also touted the possibility of combining wand and Dualshock controls effectively; for example "the motion controller as a sword and use DualShock 3 as a shield."
