I have been seeing a lot of messages of people asking about the largest PS4 hard drives you can get and many have said that there isn't a 2tb but I found one.

Personally, I'd recommend using a 7,200RPM drive over a 5,400RPM drive if at all possible. I think for almost anyone, 1TB will be enough to hold them off for a couple years of lazy storage.

Even in the current gen, it's a noticeable boost in performance to use a 7,200rpm drive. With the rest of the PS4's hardware improvement, it would be best to try and avoid any sort of "bottleneck" with the hard drive. Storage devices on PS4 are going to be frequently utilized with all the recording.

Note: While SSD would also be an improvement, the cost and current storage limitations on SSD don't seem much of a viable option for PS4 owners. $600 for a 1tb SSD drive seems hard to justify. There's also a good chance PS4 won't support TRIM to better utilize and efficiently use a SSD.

Here is the harddrive I'd recommend:

There is a feature about all this on IGN and they even took the install/boot/loading times of all different kinds of HDs (standard, SSD, SSHD).
I decided to go for a hybrid SSHD Seagate 1 TB as its double the space as the stock hd and a 20-25% boost in loading times. SSD, like you said, due to price is not really a valid option!

I got that HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM drive. Working flawlessly. Personally, I'm not convinced that the 1tb Seagate hybrid drive is worth the extra money because it's still a 5,400rpm drive for most of the data (Unless you get the 750gb one, that includes a 7,200rpm drive). It manages a small 8gb cache of flash memory for the SSD portion, but other than possibly boot up and a few minor OS features, I'd think a 7,200 is fairly close or better in terms of overall performance.

I'm fairly disappointing that IGN didn't test a 7,200 drive... in many PC benchmarks and applications, a 7,200 rpm drive outperforms the Seagate 5,400rpm hybrid.

It really is a tough choice I thought about just getting a 500gb SSD 840 Evo Series - http://boxclash.com/ps4-hard-drive-upgrade-guide/

SSDs are coming in pretty strong on load times and if I am not playing 10 games at once not really sure I will need a 2TB drive in the long run.  Guess it depends on how much gaming ADD a person has

The way I look at it, by the time I need 2tb, they'll be a lot cheaper.

A little bit OFF_topic but then again... not... I think it's curious how for example COD Ghosts is roughly a 7 GB download/install on PC but 38+ GB install on next gen consoles. Is the added load of data just garbage?! NSA-spyware? Hehe.

While I can't say for sure, I'd assume it has to do with the way things are compressed on PC.

The patches for Final Fantasy 14 ARR have been about 100mb on PC but over 700mb for PS3 players the past few updates. Many speculate it all has to do with compression tools that are available for PC. It makes a bit of sense considering COD Ghosts on PS3 is over 20gb iirc.

It might be more efficient on processes to keep things uncompressed allowing for better use of static hardware.

I was kind of wondering the same thing Scollurio lol double the file sizes on most games from PC to console but I guess the compression thing makes sense

Yeah but interestingly enough some users (this forum) seem to report that when all is said and done that the games don't take up THAT much space on the console itself, being more in tune with what's happening on PC. Maybe the number of GBs on the packages means "needed for install" and when it's delivered to the HDD its being compressed?

That Seagate/Samsung 2TB drive won't be available to the public until after the first of the year. I plan on getting it as soon as it is available. I really hope they make an SSHD version of it, though.

@nathanuc1988...That 2TB is only supposed to be in the 150.00-200.00 USD range when it comes out. Not much more than drives are now anyways.

Yeah but what I meant was by the time I'm in need of a 2tb drive (when my 1tb isn't enough), the prices of 2tb 2.5" drives will be down. Even if they can keep it at $150 usd, 1tb of 7,200rpm with 32mb cache often currently goes for $60. In terms of price per gb, those 2tb drives are still pricey. Not awful, but a bit high.

I think Seagate is shooting for Q1 2014 for the 2TB Drive.  After having PS4 though I like the SSHD option much better 1TB seems to enough if you swap out games as you go eventually but the SSHD also has considerably better load times compared to HDD and a very minute performance upgrade from the SSD

Hey guys I have a quick question. There are a lot of messages or comments stating that the PS4 doesn't go well with a an SSD Hard Drive, but an HDD Hard Drive does. Is this true? And Why?

I can't get too technical, because I simply don't know the specifics, but as far as I know, the PS4s HDD-interface/bus isn't fast enough to fully benefit from the speed of a SSD. There's been several tests and some videos on YouTube showing that installing a SSD into the PS4 doesn't bring the same gain in speed you see in modern PCs when you swap the old-fashioned HDD with a SSD.

However, there's an alternative. There's so called hybrid drives on the market. Those are HDDs that are basically normal HDDs with a huge flash-cache. Those do load data significantly faster than the stock HDD in a PS4 or a standard replacement HDD.

It's not as fast as a SSD in a PC, but compared to normal HDDs, you shave of about 1/3 of the load times compared to the stock model. There's also some YouTube videos confirming that, also, I did a comparison with a friend of mine who switched his HDD with a 1TB hybrid drive. We tried several games and most of the time, his PS4 was loading stuff much faster (about a third, as I said).

Since SSDs are still quite expensive and hybrid drives are much more affordable, I'd go with this option if I were you...I know I will eventually...I'm just waiting for a fast, affordable 2TB hybrid drive to come out.

Another reason why a SSD isn't recommended for the PS4 is that SSD drives "age" with use and need a special program to refresh them and improve their life span. Google the specifics, but basically, PCs have this "refresh program" and the PS4 hasn't, so using one in the PS4 isn't the best idea.

Thanks a lot for the information, I think I will wait for a 2TB hybrid drive. Thanks again

The problem with the PS4 is that SONY is paranoid and won't let people use external drives for anything but saved games, pictures, etc... problem is, what you can put in an external drive is only a TINY amount of what you use. Almost any DISC based game will copy up to 20-30GB of data files to speed loading times, and some PSN downloadable games can take 20-60GB of space. So I find it rather... no.. TOTALLY absurd sony put a 500GB drive into the PS4 and then says "ooo you can only put these SMALL things on an external drive"

Well.. good news.. there's a way around it.. you can have up to 1,2,3,4, or even 6 TB of INTERNAL storage!!

The ps4 supports up to a 6TB INTERNAL DRIVE!! That's the physical limitation IF a 3,4,5, or 6TB 2.5" drive existed. They don't yet... so we have to trick the PS4 into thinking an EXTERNAL DRIVE is INTERNAL... This may or may not void your warranty.. I don't see why it would since we are allowed to open it up and replace the HD... in this case we are NOT putting a HD inside the ps4! We are running a 3 ft cable to the SATA connector in the PS4 to an EXTERNAL BAY with a HD size of your choice.. thereby, fooling the PS4 that it has a huge, internal disc

I DONT recommend the 6TB as the PS4 has some issues starting up and you have to jump through hoops... (As in you can't power it on via the remote and a bunch of other things.. probably a software bug that sony won't ever fix until 2.5" 6TB drives EXIST)....Anyway I have a 4TB "internal" drive in my PS4 and I get about 3.7TB space for apps, etc.. well..everything.... Then I have a 1TB External USB drive to store all the stuff sony " allows me to"

All the instructions are here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/691087-p … 4/69429669

I stumbled on them a week ago... ordered the 4TB drive they suggested... I did NOT get the cable they suggested.. I got a 3.5" bay with an eSATA connector.. and then I bought a 3ft SATA 3 to eSATA cable (male to male)...

That did the trick!

Before I did all that, I plugged in a 64GB thumb drive and backed up all my saved games and settings, etc (I'm also a plus member so most all games saves are there to.. but I like to play things safe)

After backing it all up... I installed the new drive system.. You can also backup to an external USB drive

One hickup.. the new drive has NO OS on it.. but thats EASY:

http://us.playstation.com/support/syste … ationSteps

That shows you how to DL the PS4 OS and install it via SafeMode onto the new drive... Then you just fire it all up and restore from your thumb drive
