I'm unsure what piece of hardware to buy next, I'm loving watching Super Mario maker and am desperate for another spin on Wind Waker. At the same time I'm intrigued by the psvr taking me into worlds and the next big thing in gaming. What should I buy next?

The good thing about Wii U is that now there are at least a dozen of games that everyone should play: on April 15th you could buy Zelda WW, Donkey Kong TF or Lego City for £ 20; same price for other games (preowned or new) like Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 and so on... There's also a Mario Maker console bundle for £ 250.
PSVR is obviously tempting, but we still don't know how good its launch lineup will be. I'd buy a Wii U now, waiting for Holiday's sale to buy a PSVR.

I would wait and see how PSVR pans out, it could be a fad, like 3D, motion controls and wonderbook. I know for the price of admission I would want this to be supported for a long time and not end up like the Vita, very little first party support and relying on indies / third party.
If you looking at buying a Wii U then I would try and get one as cheap as possible as its looking like it's done for and will be replaced within the next twelve months. Third party software non existent now with first party software drying up as well. It's a shame as the games I've played I enjoyed on it. Might be better off waiting to see if the rumoured NX has backwards compatibility.
In short I would hold off on both and play the waiting game!

It depends. The Wii U games are becoming hard to find, and the talks about their next console are being leaked too much that it may be released this year. I'd wait and see if the next nintendo console would be backwards compatible with the Wii U games. As for Playstation VR, I'm going to be one of those people that wait until after the holidays...I want to see if it will actually take off, but I'm also waiting to see it get a lowered price after the holidays...plus, I also want to see about nintendo's next console. I own a Wii U (had it since day one) and love it, but with the lack of the games, it can get old (but you still come back to it). Super Mario Maker is a great game, and since it sold extremely well, you know a sequel will happen on their next console.

Lego City Undercover and Zelda Wind Waker, Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 are expensive as all get out over here in the US...if you can even find them. Lego and Zelda are $65 used if you do, and Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 are just plain hard as all get out to find. Is there a site to order them for the $20 range??? @andreoni79:

@themcnoisy: Wii U has a good strong line-up in place with a back catalogue of games at a reasonable cost. The hardware itself is relatively cheap too and it can provide a lot of entertainment for a relatively lower cost - compared to other consoles on the market and VR. It is though due to be replaced in the very near future and therefore the price could drop even lower. It may not be the 'best' time to get into the Wii U

PSVR is expensive - especially if you don't have any of the peripherals. The headset alone costs more than the PS4 and you also need the camera. If you want the surround sound you need a headset too. Games will work using the DS4 but certain games are designed to utilise the PS Move controllers - essential if you want a more immersive experience. Swinging a sword in Golem for example or taking aim with a 'gun' in Until Dawn is going to be more immersive and mirror what you see. However that pushes the price up to over £450 (if bought separately and new - I wouldn't buy 2nd hand Move because of the rechargeable batteries and don't know how they have been treated).
As far as games go, you haven't got a back catalogue to go with and so games are going to be at full retail price - again pushing the costs up. Its an unproven technology too - No one really knows if it will be a success - although in its defence it does seem to be getting a lot of support. At the moment games seem to be limited somewhat to first person experiences - shooters, walking sims, driving/flying and hack and slash (Golem looks very cluncky and slow) etc and I struggle to see how they can offer the same range as a Wii U or other console. You won't get games like the Witcher 3, Uncharted, Last of Us, Mass Effect, fighting games (unless they are like Wii Boxing). The Star Wars game sounds a bit like Kinect Star Wars with a mix of Star Wars related things to do. I can imagine a light sabre fight (like Golem) and I believe one of the things is repairing the Millennium Falcon. I get the impression its mostly a 'seated' experience and has wires linking it to the PS4 - whether that's an issue or not - but I don't like wires across my floor.
It can be used as a 'screen' for all games and will be like having a massive HD TV (by all accounts) but whether you want a quite heavy headset - I believe it weighs approx 3 DS4's - although the weight is distributed on to play games is up to you - I guess if you have other people wanting to use the TV its an option.
Its also unknown whether or not there are any 'long term' effects from using a headset. Some people may have no effect but I have heard that some people have 'struggled' initially after taking the headset off to adjust to reality and maybe some will suffer other issues (like motion sickness, eye issues) over a longer period of use. I don't know the size of your gaming space or whether you have people/pets or breakable objects in that space but being blindfolded and unaware of your actual surroundings concerns me. Swinging a Move around (hacking/slashing enemies) could cause damage or injury - it happened a lot with the Wii mote and that's with peripheral vision. I can certainly see some people ending up with some VR related injury/issue/damage. I must admit some of this is my own concerns and bias. I would wait to see how it progresses, if its a success and no health issues, see what games come out and whether any of these are 'must haves' - maybe even if the price drops too. I would look at next Christmas rather than this - Its a lot of money that could end up being under utilised or not have the 'software' you want. I have read that some people have experienced 'nausea' on faster paced things (like Rigs) and that the PSVR barely manages to keep up with it (maybe another reason Sony are looking at PS4k) but these could be resolved by the final launch.

At the end of the day its your money and up to you what you decide. Personally I don't think its the 'right' time to jump into either. If/when Nintendo launch its NX, the Wii U is likely to drop in price and I doubt it will get much support beyond that - It depends on what NX delivers I guess. Its certainly the cheaper experience and offers more variety to. You can get the hardware and a number of games for the price of just the VR Headset and by the time you factor in the additional peripheral(s) - not counting the cost of any software, you could have a fairly decent starting library. PSVR is still in its infancy too and a lot of hype surrounding VR but no long term proof of quality, success, software and of course health risks. Its likely to cost you a 'premium' too at launch as will the software. £400 (headset and Camera) and at most a 'demo' disc with access to 'playroom VR' - a 'party' style experience rather than a 'serious' gaming one. Watching the video of it, when the person wearing the headset dodges something, they are nearly bumping into their friends sat beside them (would have if they hadn't moved). Maybe VR games will cost the same as other similar 'non-VR' games - maybe even more - either way its still going to increase your outlay on top of the hardware.

An XB1 could be an alternative. Its certainly 'cheap' and does have a number of great exclusives - Sunset Overdrive is free next month on GwG. Obviously has Forza, Halo, Gears of War, Rare Replay, Quantum Break (soon) etc as well as an increasing library of Backwards Compatibility too. It maybe too similar to the PS4 though in terms of 3rd party software but you could take advantage of third party deals - Doom for example will give you Doom 1 and 2 on XB1.

As I said, its your money, your decision. I don't think the time is right to buy either a Wii U or PSVR but that's my opinion.

In short, I think the Wii U is now worth the price for the first party lineup alone, as for the PSVR, I would wait 6 months to see how it pans out before you make the investment, but that's just me.

@JLPick: Europe will get 5 Wii U Selects on April 15th: Zelda WW, Lego CIty, DKC TF, NSMBU+ NSLU and Wii Party U each € 25 / £ 20.
US will have 3 games: SM3DW, DKCTF and Pikmin 3, each $ 20.
I've seen Bayo 2 at € 20 on Amazon.it and other italian online shops, while games like MH3U and Hyrule Warrior are € 20/25.
Lego City and Zelda WW are still full price and very hard to find even here, so the upcoming Selects series is a bless. Hope they print enough copies!

Praise the Sun, and Mario too.

Honestly I would go with the Wii U now. You have such a wide variety of games to choose from. You have Wii U games, Wii games, eShop games and VC games to choose from. They are great exclusives like Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World and DK: TF just to name a few and many others that will keep you busy till the PSVR comes out.

Honestly we don't know much about the PSVR such as what games will it support, what games will be coming for it etc. Last thing you want to do is shell out that kind of money only to have another Kinect on your hands. Yeah everyone is going crazy about it now, but in the end it all depends on the software it has. And that depends how profitable it will be for developers to make games for it. If games end up costing to much to develop then software companies won't support it.

PSVR atleast that's being supported by developers. Also the WiiU will drop eveb more in price later on when the NX comes out. I can not even name 10 games worth playing on the WiiU.

If you're interested in the system and if there are enough games to justify a purchase, then go ahead and get one. I'm not sure if a price drop is coming soon, if there was a price drop, it would've happened a long time ago. Although I believe there are pretty good bundles that include 2 games, so there's that as well.

@dryrain:

lol, let's be honest here, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros U probably have more depth and hours of gameplay than the entire 2016 PSVR library.

@Tasuki The PSVR is not even launched yet and the Wii U has been out since 2012. The library of games can not be compared.

@dryrain: My point exactly we don't know what's coming out for it or even if anything is. Look at the Kinect and Move. Everyone was excited for those and we're anticipating it yet nothing but some Shovelware was developed for it. I would honestly wait a year or two to see if anything develops for the PSVR. Let's be honest, the Vita, move, PSTV. Sony doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to things game related that's not an actual Playstation.

@dryrain: I think you can. On one hand there's a system with plenty of games to play right now and the other is a device that hasn't even launched yet and one we don't even know a lot about. I don't think the question was what he should buy in three years; but rather this year. It's perhaps an unfair comparison, but a system that has plenty of games available today is a lot more interesting than one that may or may not have a good library.

The PSVR is not just about the games specifically developed for it any game on PS4 can be played on the device using the cinematic mode. It adds a whole new dimension playing a game on a large screen as opposed to a normal TV. The two systems offer very different gaming experiences its not just about the games its how you play them and are immersed in the worlds. The poster needs to look at the games on Wii U and PSVR and see what he would enjoy playing more.

Also I will add the fact that they Wii U is a great system to play with multiple people such as family and friends the PSVR won't be.

@Farmboy74: @JLPick: I forgot about the NX - is that happening this year? Time flies when your having fun.

@Tasuki whats Neo Fast Racer?

Thanks everyone for getting back, I may buy the wii u - but I think the overall consensus on both the psvr and the wii u is to wait it out for positive feedback on vr and the new system from Nintendo.

@BAMozzy Im 100% not getting an X1, but my god the games with gold line up is awesome next month. Sunset overdrive and wolf amongst us! Its too similar to the ps4 and I dont miss the franchises as I played far too much of them (gears/halo/forza).

@themcnoisy: I can understand and respect that decision. Its just that as an 'alternative' to the 2 options and considering the cost, its a good alternative and likely to be supported longer than the Wii U but like I said, its probably too similar to the PS4. GwG certainly has been impressive of late - worth the cost of Gold in just 1 maybe 2 months at most - particularly with the Backwards compatibility. I know you had a XB360 so I didn't think it was a 'daft' suggestion especially if you still own your games and are familiar with the controller. I know that it has a few familiar franchises but also has a few unique ones too - Quantum Break, Scalebound, Recore, Ori, Sea of Thieves, Ryse, Titanfall as well as Crackdown and Halo Wars returning - of course these may not appeal but considering you can get a XB1 for £220 with a game (if you shop around) and enables you to buy any game on either console taking advantage of 3rd party deals, I thought it may be an outside option but fully respect and understand your point of view.
Probably better to wait and see how the market transpires. I can see Nintendo NX being announced by E3 and released around the same time as PSVR. Maybe that could be an alternative to any of the above mentioned options? At least whilst you are considering, you can put money aside so if you do go for the more expensive option, you have enough for software too. Waiting could give you a better idea of what games each will offer and maybe that's will be the deciding factor. So far I haven't seen a game for PSVR that is a must have but I admit that could very easily change between now and release...
