Topic: What Retro Systems/Games Do You Own?

I'm just a curious party here, but what systems from yesteryear do any of you own? For my own testimony, I own many consoles, some of which date back to the 1980s, and yes they still work. My first is the original SEGA Master System. From there, I also own my original Genesis/MEGA DRIVE, SEGA CD, and 32X. I also own 2 SEGA Saturn consoles as well as the SEGA Powerbase Converter for the original model Genesis as well (Google it). As well a Game Gear, SEGA's first handheld console.

I also own an original NES, and SNES. I also have a Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advance SP, N64 and a digital component capable Gamecube (early model).

On the Sony side of things, I have my first model 1001-series PlayStation with the composite cable inputs before Sony came out with their standardised cable for AV inputs that would eventually be employed for the PS2. I also own an original tray loading PS2 as well as the slim model that came out before Sony discontinued the system. I also have a fully functional PSP of which I imported a few RPGs that originally released on the PSX that were never released for the system on North America, being Tales of Eternia and Breath of Fire III. Scheisse, it's hard for me to keep track of all of them. I've been a gamer now for 29 years, since I was 7 years old, and it won't stop anytime soon. What systems do all of you other people here own, both old gamers and the young? I eagerly await responses and discussion!

Ok so now I can go into a bit more detail,

I own the following systems

SNES
Sega Genesis with CD Attachment
PS2
N64
Sega Dreamcast
PS4
Wii U
Ouya
Which is pictured above along with a Nintendo DS and GBA SP. All of them are currently hooked up to that tv, we'll except for the DS and GBA .

I also own, which is not picture aboved due to space limitations currently is an Xbox and an Xbox 360 which are in my son's room and a Wii which I just have in the closet. I am in the process of getting a Neo Geo consolized MVS system as well to add to my collection. I also own a PSTV which I have in my bedroom so I can stream my PS4 games if someone wants to use the tv above, and a 3DS which is also in my bedroom for some late night gaming.

As of late I have been playing the Genesis and Dreamcast alot but that's probably cause I didn't own many games on the Genesis when I was a kid (btw that is my original Genesis that I got one Christmas morning) and the Dreamcast I didn't own back in that gen. So I have been playing games on those that I missed or have never played at all.

An N64, but I don't think it works too well these days, due to lack of use.

If you count last gen as "retro", we have a PS3, Wii, & 360 as well.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

I have a Master System 2, a Megadrive, an N64, a PS2, a Wii, and a PS3.

Up until I moved, I had a lot of my gaming devices dating back to a Commodore Vic20. However due to lack of storage options, I had to get rid of a lot of stuff including most of my 'retro' gaming devices. Most ended up going to a tip and my N64 went to my son. I kept my original xbox (crystal), my day 1 phat PS3 (not working anymore -YLOD) and my Gameboy Colour. I also have an Xbox 360 slim and PS3 slim - both still set up but rarely used.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

I used to have a ton of systems, but due to working away had to ditch them

I currently have a mega drive, x360, wii, 2ds (inherited this off my son yesterday) ps vita, ps4, 5 and 15 year old PCs.

I'm likely selling the mega drive as I have barely played it and my favourite games (sor2-3, sonic1-3, shinobi, outrun, afterburner) are all on my 360. Likewise the wii as the 2ds is a nice device with loads of old games in the e shop so really pleased with that!!

I have had a huge urge to buy a Saturn as it completely passed me by - Panzer Dragoon and shining force 3!!! But retro gaming is time consuming and other than a quick twenty minute go on something I have pretty much stopped. The only games that will ever buck that trend are ff7-10, shining force 2, rollercoaster tycoon, Syndicate, Ridge Racer type 4 and Civ 3.

To all here, I was talking about systems of yesteryear, not really considering the systems of the last generation that are largely still active with the current development cycle. So I would be very pleased to discuss systems of olde, not including PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii. Original PS consoles such as the first PlayStation, PS2, and PSP, as well as the early DS handheld consoles and Gamecube.

themcsnoisy talked about an urge to look at a Saturn:

It was, and IS, a fantastic system, home to a few very notable RPGs. You spoke of Panzer Dragoon Saga, of which I do own a copy I paid a premium for several years ago. It's also home to Shining Force 3 and only the first disc of the actual game to receive a western translation as opposed to its full release in Japan on 3 discs. The other game I would advocate as one of my absolute favourites is Shining the Holy Ark. To this day I have not seen another game even imitate it and it remains a fabulous addition to complement a Saturn library. I also own the last Saturn game published in the west that is Magic Knight Rayearth. A great release by then publisher, Working Designs before they became defunct.

The last comment I will make is regarding the Dreamcast, SEGA's last console before exiting the hardware market. Arguably the best RPG in SEGA's history relevant to it is Skies of Arcadia, which was also re-released on the Gamecube. A fantastic RPG that also needs to be recognised as a great contribution to the RPG coffers of consoles of olde. Apparently, I cannot talk about console emulation here for fear of legal reprisal runs rampant here and censorship also has a foothold. I can respect that, even if I disagree with it.

It's fine if you disagree but again if you want to talk about emulation there are places out there to discuss it here is not one of them, am afraid. Same goes as offering advice on how to or asking people to PM or email you about it. If people have question or need advice they can Google it. Thanks for understanding -Tasuki-

Tasuki thats like an alladins cave of gaming machines. I still own the original PS one with a VCD attachment back in the days when VCDs where still a thing. I have an amiga 1200 and a Gameboy. I always think its good to go back and play some of the games but realise every game is linked to a time and moment so never seems the same going back.

@SaiyanFury: I understand your view-point but I also think that gen 7 is now 'retro'. I know there are still a few games releasing for it but I can't think of any that are 'exclusive' to that generation (no gen 8 version). I could be wrong of course. Is the Wii still getting releases too? These systems are 10 years old now and in gaming terms that is a significantly long time ago. I have moved exclusively to Gen 8 and would consider playing my gen 7 consoles as a 'retro' experience - maybe not as retro as going back to the PS2, Xbox era as the leap between each generation has appeared to decrease. Games of Gen 7 are not that dissimilar in terms of game-play and style to that of Gen 8 compared to the difference between 6 and 7 (although again we did see a cross-over of multi gen releases). When did the PS2 era become 'retro' to the PS3 era, I am betting it was less than 10 years after it launched - well for a lot of people.
I guess that I am trying to say is that 'retro' is different for some people than others. I guess if you are still actively using and buying games for a gen 7 console or if you don't have a gen 8 console, then it isn't retro but if you haven't used it and/or bought games for it in 2yrs because you moved on to gen 8 it is retro.

Well I'm gradually building mine and and this is what I have:

Atari 2600 'woody' with composite mod for modern TV's
Astro Wars (1981)
Dragon 32 with composite mod
Mario Cement factory Game & Watch
Sinclair Spectrum 48k (dead flesh keyboard)
Sinclair Spectrum 128k +2
Mega-Drive
Original GameBoy in Black (switched it on for the first time after 20 years and it's worked a treat )
2 x PS2's
1 x PS3

I'm looking to get a Spectrum 128k 'toast rack' but they are pretty expensive as they were replaced by the +2 when Amstrad bought Sinclair.

@dryrain: Lol its getting there slowly. I need to get a other switch box so I can hook up other stuff down the road like my Wii which also has GC backwards compatibility and PC Engine and of course my Neo Geo when I get it.

Oh and Fars as retro goes @BAMozzy says retro means something different for each person. I feel that it's more tied to your age so for someone like my age for example a PS2 might not be considered retro but to someone much younger it may be.

With that said generally around here a common bench mark for retro is anything not current gen or last gen, so that would be PS2 and older would be considered retro.

For me I just stated all the systems I owned cause I was in somewhat of a rush. No way do I consider the PS4 retro lol.

Haha, well I wasn't intending to start a semantic debate over what constitutes a 'retro' system as such, but it's a fair point. I don't really consider the PS3/Xbox 360 generation as 'retro', persay'. I meant consoles from the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era and before. But yes, everyone could have a potentially differing opinion on what the term refers to. One of the little niceties I managed to pick up before they became ridiculously overpriced was a Gamecube component cable from Japan. The average was already quite expensive when I got it averaging around 90 dollars. I lucked up and found mine for 40, which I still pat myself on the back for finding, but the average price I see on eBay these days is from 200 to 350 dollars. To be sure, I'm quite happy I got the one I did, when I did. I'd feel a real pillock for paying 2-300 dollars for a simple component cable now.

@SaiyanFury: Lol I don't either especially since you can walk into a retailer now like Wal Mart or Target and still buy 360 games for example. Heck I don't even consider Gamecube and PS2 retro but that's just me and that is a debate for another day.

Switching gears, I want to get a power base converter for my Genesis so I can play Master System games on it but I have the model 2 Genesis and it's pretty hard to find one for it.

@Tasuki: To the best of my knowledge I don't believe SEGA made a PowerBase Converter for the model 2 Genesis, I think it was only for the original. That said, I could very well be wrong, it happens from time to time, haha.

As well, I don't really consider the PS2/Gamecube truly retro either, but they are slightly older so they do sort of fit in there. I still have my PS2 hooked up to the same telly that my Vita TV, PS3, Xbox 360 and PS4 are all hooked to so can play it whenever. As well I have a pair of now discontinued wireless controllers for extended range should I need it. What's also very cool is that they're officially Sony licensed controllers made by Katana. I don't believe they're readily available anymore.
