I'll go with the original PSone. What a time to be alive, so many original IPs and such a diverse range of titles too. I love it. And linked up a couple of PSones a few times as well, for some Skirmish on Red Alert and a bit of Doom co-op. Shame there weren't many games that made use of that feature.

It's the Wii. That system is legendary.

N64

The cartridges, 4 controller ports and analogue stick controllers made it special for me. A limited library for sure, but the quality of the Nintendo and Rare games on the N64 cannot be denied.

@get2sammyb: ApostateMage. The on hardware Alex kidd in miracle world was the deciding factor.

@get2sammyb: It was a nostalgia thing. Streets Of Rage, Outrun, Road Rash, California Games, Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Desert Strike....

Dreamcast. Way ahead of it's time in multiple ways, and had a crop of great games including Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Skies of Arcadia, Rez, Sonic Adventure, Phantasy Star Online, Resident Evil: Code Veronica - and a host of great fighters, sports games and ports from the PS1.

There was a game idea here. It's gone now.

@ApostateMage: At least half of those look like Mega Drive games to me.

Wow, this is tough. Ok, let me narrow it down first.

SNES (obvious first choice that comes to mind)
N64
PS2
3DS

I actually think the PS4 may be a top contender itself by the end of this generation. But, for now, PS4 will have to wait it's due course of time before full evaluation. And I love PS3 library, 360 library, and GameCube. Those are honorable mentions for sure.

Now, to whittle these choices down to one. Hmmm... Ya know, I love the N64 and its impact is undeniable- analog, 3D games, timeless library... but, I just think there are better systems overall. As for PS2, it has a HUGE library, but that's all I can really say for it. Not many games I'd consider timeless.

So, SNES or 3DS.... I don't think there's any doubt SNES was a better system with an INCREDIBLE library of games that are still playable today- Illusion of Gaia, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Zelda LttP, Super Mario World, Mega Man X... But 3DS has a pretty incredible library too- Fire Emblem Awakening/Fates, Monster Hunter 3/4/Generations, Zelda LBW/Ocarina/MM, DKC Returns, Xenoblade, Kid Icarus, StarFox 3D, etc. And the benefit of virtual console, allowing SNES, GBA, NES, GB, GBC, Genesis, GameGear games to be played on it as well. Which yes, may be cheating but, it's a huge asset all the same. Gosh dang this is a hard choice. I'm gonna say SNES, even though 3DS is personally my favorite platform of all time.

SNES it is.

Thanks @JaxonH: Great opinion, I've never personally used the 3ds for an extended period of time other than professor Layton, new super Mario bros and brain training near the beginning of its life. Always mean to dig it out (and my vita), but always switch my ps4 on instead. So yeah, the Snes is a great choice anyhow.

On Tuesday this section will be wrapped up and new rules in place to find our number 1 games console. Check back then!

@themcnoisy:

I used to have the OG model turquoise 3DS and OG XL, but it wasn't until they released the New 3DS models that I really fell in love with the system, particularly the smaller New 3DS with interchangeable faceplates. It's perfect pocket size, looks so amazing with Fire Emblem faceplates, has higher ppi than the XL (though I love the New XL too, love it), and the colored buttons really set it off. The new models are where it's at though. Xenoblade is one of the greatest modern RPG's of our time and the SNES virtual console is HUGE. And the 3D, wow. Hey finally perfected it. I love me some games in 3D- just can't get enough. I never want to go back to a non-3D handheld again. It's just... more immersive. A lot more. And never gets old to look at.

But really, even if you don't have any interest in upgrading to a new model (though I'd strongly recommend it) the games are what makes it stand out as the best handheld ever made. Rarely does any platform get even one single game that's a true, timeless classic. 3DS has so many I've lost count. Ever since Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion 2 and Fire Emblem they've been hammering out classics as if it were the last platform they're ever going to make. If nothing else, play Fire Emblem Awakening, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (or Generations which drops next Friday) and Zelda Link Between Worlds. I mean, there's like 2 dozen others I'd say are must-MUST plays but, those 3 really are the best. And the Sega 3D Classics.

The Vita I like too. I don't really play it much but, I have to recommend Final Fantasy X (nothing like JRPG's on a handheld, especially timeless classics). It's more of an exotic luxury handheld for me, but every now and then I like to bust it out and enjoy it's gems. Only thing is, most of its best games are not exclusive (or no longer exclusive). But it's great for stuff like that new Adventure of Mana mobile port. Best way to enjoy that rare entry for sure.

Interesting results so far. Never expected Dreamcast to have that many votes, but it's certainly deserving. Had it been on the market for at least five years there's a great chance, with the rate at which Sega was pumping out great game after great game, that it would've been my favorite console of all-time.

@JaxonH:

The problem with the 3DS, to me at least, is that it's lacking in a lot of genres, it's very platformer / JRPG / Nintendo first party heavy......at the expense of other titles.

Anyways, since the Dreamcast seems to be on a kick, I'll vote for it as well.......I think it was last console which had an initial "wow" factor. Also probably the last console where arcade like experiences where plentiful. A very unique library that was SEGA and Capcom centric, it contrasted well compared to Sony's and Nintendo's offerings at the time........and the quality to quantity game ratio for only a two year lifespan in NA is amazing.

The Dreamcast was a great console but it couldn't compete with the PS and the big advertising campaign Sony had used. The Dreamcast was also not that easy to programme for and therefore didn't get the big 3rd party support. Sega lost a lot of money on the Dreamcast - not that they had a lot after the 32x. It did have some great Sega games though but I certainly wouldn't put it in the top 5 consoles of all time because many others had more impact on the gaming world. It did inspire MS and their DirectX Box - which became just Xbox by the time it launched. Quite a few of the games - Jet Set Future, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue ended up on other consoles after the Dreamcast ceased. It couldn't compete with the PS's library, it was over-priced for the time (and dropped rapidly causing Sega more money issues - let alone going over budget on games like Shenmue) and the promise of PS2 all contributed to the Dreamcast and Sega's console decline. I think IGN named this in the Top 10 greatest consoles (8 I believe) back during the PS3/XB360 era and now we have the PS4, XB1, WiiU etc, I think top 10 is about right...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@BAMozzy:

Have to disagree with you, if you owned and played the Dreamcast during its 1999 to 2001 lifespan, you would understand why people love it so much. It was for many the most satisfying short span of gaming that they would have. The fact that some of the games were later ported is not of consequence.

Your talking about the platform like a historian, but not as somebody who was in love with it during its heyday.
