I'm thinking really hard about this but I don't know how to get to a list of 6. Thinking about this all day, and my list is still 7 games long... I need to think harder.

Loved your list, @DerMeister . Much like mine, though!

@Kidfried Dude, I’m with you. I can’t even begin to narrow it down. I’m letting my brain simmer on it a bit. It’s so tough to compare games from many years ago. What kind of criteria should I use? My overall enjoyment at the time, or whether it would actually be enjoyable to play today? Some of my favorites from childhood would probably be mind-numbingly boring by today’s standards.

@themcnoisy I would kind of like to read people’s reasons for them picking the games they pick, if they want to share. But this is my first mcnoisy GOAT poll to participate in, so maybe the debate and defending of your choices comes in later rounds?
I’m just fascinated at the variety and breadth of some of the choices and I assume some of the picks are emotional in nature, and sometimes they maybe technical, or a perception of the game being a trend setter, and sometimes maybe just a gut feeling.

KratosMD

@Th3solution Do you really need to hear my reasons for picking Persona 4 Golden, Trails of Cold Steel II, NieR Automata and Danganronpa V3?

I gotta be honest, I just picked MGS2 and MK8 at random. They have been nowhere near as influential for me as the aforementioned four games.

PS1: Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy IX, Tomb Raider II

Th3solution

@KratosMD Lol, true that some, if not most, of the picks are probably self-explanatory. And you and I have talked about each of those games in your list quite a bit here before
Mostly I am curious when someone pick a really retro game or one that wasn’t very popular.
But seeing your list motivates me to get cracking on some of those in my backlog. MK8 being the only choice I either haven’t played or don’t have plans to play.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

KratosMD

@Th3solution Go for it! I just chose MK8 because I wanted a Nintendo title somewhere in there and if I had to choose one Nintendo game that I've played extensively throughout my life, then it would have to be Mario Kart. I played Mario Kart Wii the most when I played online with my friends but Mario Kart 8 is objectively better, especially now that the Switch version actually has a good Battle Mode.

But yeah, you really should've been here like a year ago when we were discussing the definition of "the best game". People's lists will all look differently for different reasons, let it be nostalgia, or preferences, or whatever. It does help spice things up though.

Kidfried

@KratosMD I love the Mario Kart series and I've spent so many hours on it. I would love to pick a Mario Kart game, but I'm not gonna. Not one of the game on its own is so unique, that I would pick it over some of the other games.

But yea, that ties into exactly what you were talking about: people have so many different reasons to choose one game over the other.

@Th3solution I love reading people's reasons more than their lists! Not being a native speaker I often find it difficult to really articulate why a game is so special to me, but I'm going to try my best with my list.

@Octane Nearly perfect list. If only you had switched Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze out for a SNES DKC. Not attacking your choice in any way, because Tropical Freeze is magical, but I wonder why you prefer it above the original games.

Octane

@Kidfried DKC is up there with Returns, but I liked Tropical Freeze a little more. Going back to DKC after playing Tropical Freeze, it's a bit clunky and the field of view is pretty small too.

But that's like asking me why I picked Sunshine over 64 or Odyssey. I almost like all of them equally, and I had to make a choice!

I'm just glad I didn't have to vote for TLOU and OOT

Octane

Kidfried

@Octane Ha, I get what you mean, though. Making this list is always picking between the original or the more refined. I see where you're coming from.

Personally I had more fun with the first DKC. It's less focused on collectibles, I really dig its soundtrack and had more fun taking turns in co-op than playing simultaneously. Recently have been playing it again with my brother on the SNES Mini. I hate the small field of view too, though

There will be a round up later in the week of all the games through so far! Thanks everyone for voting. 5 or 6 more people voting and we will have more than enough games!

@Th3solution you will see my man, you will see.

Trust me when one of your games goes into a tough draw you will 100% write why it needs to stay. Theres multiple rounds and its highly likely your games could be drawn together at some point. I think one year someone had 4 picks in the same 6 game league later on in the cup.
