Hello,

Will scratched game discs work on the PSone? And if it seems like they work, will they only work for some of the game and crap out at some point?

@tuhin94: it's common for PS1s to struggle reading discs as they get older. So while the disc might be a bit banged up, it still might work better in some PS1s than it does others. I had a few discs that wouldn't load, or skipped FMVs that ran fine off my PS2 and PS3.

You used to be able to buy new laser units easily enough. I'm sure you still can on eBay. But I'd recommend just playing on a PS3 if you can.

@tuhin94: It depends as Kyle pointed out if the laser can scan the information. Its not uncommon for music to cut out whilst the gameplay is fine for instance.

Cool, thanks for your inputs! I got a copy of Vigilante 8 from eBay recently and it has some hemicircular scratches near the edge so I got a bit concerned.

as others have said it depends on how bad it is

for example my copy of FFVIII has ONE scratch on the second disc but it is enough for it to crash every time during the Garden assault (i brought a second copy of the game so i could still play it)

My experience with PS1 discs with my release PS1 was that scratches used to cause me gamebreaking issues but that could easily have been my machine. I was also at college and swapped a lot of discs and bought a lot from disreputable second hand vendors so often got some banged up discs. I would agree with suggestions to try them on later gen machines.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

@KratosMD: FFIX has problems on PS3 too so do many other game, it's because the Backwards Compatibility is done via emulation not via inbuilt hardware

I don't know, I haven't had problems with PS1 games on the PS3. Of course the only games I played was Castlevania SotN, Bushido Blade 1 and 2, Legend of Dragoon and Spyro.
