So I'm ready for the open world Sonic RPG. Come on Sega, get with Ubisoft and make it happen. I'm joking, of course but full disclosure, I'd actually play the heck out of that. 🤣

FullbringIchigo

@Frigate as long as Ubisoft ISN'T involved, so would i

but i wouldn't want Ubisoft to do it because it would be as bland and formulaic as all their other ones have become

FINAL FANTASY will NEVER reach 30 main numbered games because no one will ever be allowed to call a game FINAL FANTASY XXX

don't mind me i'm just changing my profile pic everyday to confuse people

Frigate

@FullbringIchigo They are definitely formulaic. I love their games personally but it's probably because I know exactly what I'm getting, silly as that seems.

A fully dedicated Sonic RPG with an immersive world and story would be great. Perhaps a more traditional RPG route from an eastern dev would be better. Western devs tend to make a massive open map, fill it with markers and away you go, which I like, but it's not right for Sonic.

Frigate

FullbringIchigo

@Frigate well they tried a more traditional one before on the DS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, it wasn't bad actually but nothing great either

it was pretty average

@themcnoisy Thanks! Despite getting half the names for the side events wrong. When I went back on the game yesterday, I had a couple "D'oh!" moments!

@RogerRoger I did not, but I probably will. The weekend ended up busier than I'd anticipated!

Sonic Mania is free on PS Plus.

I already own it. Great Sony, that is 3x months in a row I own one of the games. Bah.

@themcnoisy Yeah, shame it doesn't include the dlc. At least it's a really good game though.

i ended up booting it up last night for quick spin (Boom Boom!) without even realising it was on Plus. May just buy the Encore DLC and pretend that it was free

If there is a game series that I have never understood, it has to be the Sonic franchise. I didn’t come here to spread dissent, however. I fully admit my lack of any enthusiasm for the blue blur is strictly out of ignorance. The early Sega systems were before my time and now that he’s a multi platform star, I haven’t really felt the drive to invest in the games. But .... here we are, with a Sonic game available as a game offering for June PS Plus. And I follow these conversations enough to know that there is rabid fandom on all sides and almost a civil war amongst Sonic fans about the modern games and their quality, but my knowledge stops there. The question then is — for a complete noob would Sonic Mania be a decent entry point to the long and storied franchise? Would it even make sense? Would it ruin my impression of an otherwise stellar game series? Or would it turn me into a fervent Sonic enthusiast?
Since the game won’t cost me anything other than time then I’m apt to consider a try, but I have to admit, I’m not particularly excited to try it, but more like a curiosity about what all the fuss is about the games.

@KALofKRYPTON The Encore DLC for Sonic Mania really isn't worth it. You get access to Mighty and Ray, sure, but they don't play half as well as the core characters. The remixed stages are barely changed at all, aside from the colour palette. All of the most important, noticeable improvements are in the base game regardless (new cutscene transitions, new Stardust Speedway Zone, Act 2 boss, etc.) so trust me, I wouldn't waste your pennies.

@Th3solution Long story short? Yes, play Sonic Mania. Especially since it's free.

Sonic Mania is a pixel-perfect celebration / callback to the original SEGA MegaDrive (Genesis for you, I guess) platformers that made Sonic such an instant hit and, for a time, gave Mario a real run for his money. It contains all the core concepts of Sonic's unique place in gaming; speed-based momentum gameplay, bright colours, cheesy-yet-awesome music and a semi-tough learning curve to really "git gud" and unlock the secret, true ending. You might not get all of the teeny-tiny references, but it's the best way to feel like you're experiencing classic Sonic without actually experiencing classic Sonic.

And I say all this as a fan of modern, 3D Sonic games. I adore 2D Sonic as well; it's what I grew up with, after all, and so it's what got me into the franchise. I just happen to prefer modern Sonic, but if you're coming new to the whole thing then it's better to start at the beginning... or, in this case, at a lovingly-crafted reminder of what the beginning was like.

@RogerRoger Sonic Mania sounds like a reasonable entry point. Would you say the gameplay of it is similar to a 2D Crash Bandicoot?

@Th3solution Sonic 1-3 on the Mega drive are all really good games. Easy to beat and fun to play. You almost always run left to right. The games get progressively more difficult but never so difficult you give up.

Sonic Mania shares the same look, however it is tougher with a more intertwining level design (reminiscent of Sonic CD) which for me is a negative as the momentum of Sonic is regularly hampered. It also has the worst bonus game with the sphere collecting - why they didn't go with the tunnel running from Sonic 2 is beyond me as that's awesome.

It has a 16bit plus upgrade about it. So some additional 3d effect on rings and extra animations. So it doesn't look as dated as the Megadrive games. You can play as anyone of the 3 main characters and there's a multiplayer mode.

I would personally rate it as a 6/10 game in its own right against other PS4 games. 8-9/10 if you are a fan of the Sonic CD level design.

As a newcomer it would be interesting to hear your experience. Well worth a shot.

@Th3solution Hmm. Crash is a tough comparison to make. Invariably, he allows for slower-paced precision and "let me wait here and figure this out" gameplay. Sonic is all about holding right and timing your jumps, keeping your speed up and briefly stopping to explore. Crash is a character who must traverse a level; Sonic is a character who must work with his level's geometry. There's a beautiful synergy when it works well but the downside is that poor design can lead to clunky, frustrating moments in between.

And I think @themcnoisy has a point about the level design in Sonic Mania, it is a little more stop-start than many would prefer. A lot of it is made up of returning levels, however, so some work better than others. Flying Battery Zone is almost non-stop, fluid grace but then it leads to Press Garden Zone, which can be a bit of a chore. That's always the way with Sonic, even the 3D games; because environments often come with their own gimmicks, some levels are better than others. Like, a lot better.

Since you're totally uninitiated, I still think Sonic Mania is the best place to start. It'll show you a lot of good, but also flag up some of the bad. I'd agree with the 6/10 score and call it "representative of classic Sonic gameplay" across the board.

If you like the atmosphere but struggle with the gameplay, a 3D adventure might be your thing.

@RogerRoger @themcnoisy Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely post thoughts and impressions if I decide to play it. The play style is not in my typical wheelhouse, but I’ve found some of my favorites by experimenting outside my comfort zone (for example Bloodborne, Until Dawn, Fez, NieR Automata... to name a few games I either played just strictly on Push Square recommendation or because they were free on Plus)

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Thrillho

I found the “remixed” Sonic Mania levels very disorientating as even though I haven’t played the original games for over a decade, I still knew it wasn’t the same layout.

As @themcnoisy says, the new levels are a bit odd with so many different routes through but some of the old games would have multiple routes to a lesser degree. The chase bonus sections are horrible though and really gave me headaches.

@Th3solution These guys are all crazy with their sixes out of tens. Sonic Mania is the game of the generation and makes God of War, Red Dead, Horizon etc look like the science projects of particularly untalented children.

I say this of course as a deluded 2D Sonic fanboy. I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

@Gremio108 Wow ... Sonic Mania just moved way up the backlog list then! I almost can’t wait for next Tuesday. Maybe I’ll just go ahead and buy it now! 😉

@Th3solution Might as well, then you never have to bother playing another game again.

Joking aside I do have a couple of issues with Mania, but I'll save them for after you've played it so I don't affect your enjoyment of any levels/bosses.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.
