Topic: "Gotta Go Fast!" - A Sonic the Hedgehog Topic

RogerRoger

On the eve of Team Sonic Racing's release, and with at least one other game in development, I thought I'd create a dedicated topic to discuss the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Untitled

Created as SEGA's new mascot for the console war of the early 1990s, Sonic the Hedgehog was once the most popular and recognised gaming brand in the world, eschewing traditional precision platforming for speed-based gameplay. When SEGA stopped making hardware, they continued making Sonic software; the franchise has spawned dozens of games on every major console for the past three generations, along with several animated cartoons, a CGI television show, various comics and an upcoming Hollywood film.

Whilst the critical reception is never quite consistent from game to game, anything with Sonic on the box can be relied upon for speedy gameplay, colourful visuals and awesome music. Chances are, you've played at least one, so here's a place to chat about your experiences and / or hopes for forthcoming releases.

Kidfried

@RogerRoger So... do you expect to like the new Sonic racer a lot?

Kidfried

RogerRoger

@Kidfried I always expect to like a new Sonic game.

In all seriousness, the fact that it was Sumo Digital compensated for my nervousness over the team scoring mechanic (as you know, I'm a lonely gamer and it sounded like something tailor-made for forced online social interaction) but it wasn't until the positive reviews on Friday that I started to allow myself to get really hyped. Because otherwise, it was kinda creeping up on me.

So I've been listening to Sonic music all day, and briefly played a couple levels of Sonic Forces earlier, to try and make up for lost pre-release excitement time.

Think it'd ever appeal to you?

@RogerRoger I've said this loads of times. All Sonic needs to become relevant is a 2d game but you have the ability to zoom out in real time to view all the areas and pathways. Or even a toggle so you can move the screen around without moving Sonic. Unlike yesteryear no one other than speed runners would contemplate playing a Sonic game to the capacity of 1992, so this would be a great touch and stop unnecessary deaths and aid in finding secrets or pathways in something like Sonic CD.

Sonic Adventure was my favourite Sonic game.

@KALofKRYPTON Ha, funny that you mention that. Sonic Heroes is actually my number two.

Both great games.

@Kyroki Ha.

I really do not like Adventure

I know @RogerRoger isn't keen, but I really feel that Sonic Mania is the Sonic triumph of the series since Generations.

@KALofKRYPTON I know Adventure isn't great. But it's the first Sonic game I had ever played and I love it for nostalgia's sake and, in all honesty, I've not really dived deep into the Sonic series since Heroes.

Sonic gets a bad rap but some of his games are great. SOME.

I'm looking forward to watching the movie. Even if it turns out to be a massive turd, I'll still watch it.

@Kyroki You're certainly not in the minority with Adventure - it's well regarded. I really can't stand it.

There's some brilliance in the series from Heroes to date; unfortunately that brilliance tends to apply to sections of gameplay along the way rather than entire games.

Sonic got me into gaming, so I'll always have time for him. I'll even give the 3D stuff a go from time to time. The new racer looks like it could be a laugh, but really I'm just crossing my fingers for a follow up to Mania.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

I guess I can say I'm a Sonic fan. I've played most of the games. My first Sonic game was actually Sonic CD, of all titles. The first Sonic I owned was Advance 2, however. That particular game is probably one of my favorites despite it's issues. (You'll hear me say that a lot in regard to any Sonic game)

I've always been one of the fans that give the 3D games a chance, and honestly think that sometimes the flaws or general quality is exaggerated. It kinda helps that I'm young enough to have grown up with modern rather than old Sonic. That said, Sonic '06 and Shadow are games I won't defend. Those were bad. And since Rise of Lyric was a TV show tie-in, I don't consider it a proper Sonic game. Hopefully there'll still be 3D Sonic games, and hopefully they'll hit the high mark, rather than milking classic Sonic.

The series has also been responsible for my favorite gaming music. Many tracks from the levels and the vocal themes are things I can't tire of. Even Sonic '06 had great music- Dreams of an Absolution is one of my favorite themes, especially the Jun Senoue remix.

But yeah, like Final Fantasy, everyone will have their faves, and I'm sure the 2D vs 3D debate originated from that franchise as well. And I respect everyone's opinions on the series.

@DerMeister my first was Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System, it was built into the one i had

it was basically the same game as the Game Gear version but pretty fun

@FullbringIchigo Same here, but I can remember having it on cartridge. I think Duck Hunt was built into mine as I had the bundle with the light phaser.

Loved the earlier games but kinda out grew them later on. Have Sonic Mania on PS4 but only played the first level. On my ever growing list of games I must get back to.

We are now in a world of people being offended for other people who they think should be offended, who arent offended.

@JohnnyShoulder mania is a great love letter to the classic games BUT it also has all of those games flaws

i know Sonic fans rave about the old games but they wasn't perfect either

I once completed Sonic 2 in 52 minutes. I have no idea if that's good. It's the one and only time I've ever attempted to speedrun a game.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

Just had a look and it's not bad! The world record is 19 minutes and 19 seconds. Well done to that guy. I'd beat him in split-screen Mystic Cave though

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

I love Sonic, my favourite of the 2D ones is Sonic Chaos (Master System), simply because it’s the one I played most of as a kid. I really enjoyed Adventure 1 and 2 as well, i’d love another like those two.
