The memory cards issue. Should have a decent amount of on board memory to start with and then topped up if needed with extra cards.

I love the screen, how great games look on it, and a lot of the exclusive (or ex-exclusive) games are great. I love the PSone and PSP virtual console too.

As for dislikes.

-analog is too close to screen, and a lot of games use touching the screen as an action. Thumb brushes against it and triggers action by accident

-rear touchpad is SUCH an aggravation for games that use it. Always trying to not touch it sucks.

-memory cards are not enough space and too expensive. I have a 128gb for 3DS for $40. But the 64gb for Vita for $85 has been full for some time, meaning game-swapping musical chairs

-too many games releasing digital only, which sucks cause my memcard is full. Dragon Quest Builders and both God Eaters? There goes another 10gb of games I need to delete.

I've had my Vita for less than a year now and so happy with it. I'm a big JRPG fan and love playing psone classics and psp ports on it. It's very sad that Sony is giving up on it in NA. Like most people on this thread, I hate that the memory cards are ridiculously expensive for no reason. Makes no sense. Just bought Persona 3, enjoyed Person 4 Golden.

Also currently playing

  • Suikoden;
    Final Fantasy 6 (I've never played the older games and doing some catch up);
    Freedom Wars
    Downwell (random but this game is addictive)

@dryrain: the fact you have to have memory cards isn't the issue, it's the stupid price Sony charge for them that's the problem and the fact that they don't let any third parties make any either

Love:
-Massive library of games that appeal to me
-Standby mode battery life. I've genuinely paused games for 3-4 days before I got back to them
-The digital discounts. Despite being seemingly abandoned, the vita does receive some great sales
-Vita games that are also available on PS4 are usually cheaper
-Cross buy/save
-The Vita Community. #VitaIsland

Hate:
-Memory Card Space/Price. I owe 3x64GB, 1x16GB & 1x8GB. Either give us bigger memory cards or drop the price. They must be cheaper to produce now
-Limited access to PS1 classics (give me wild arms 2)
-No R2/L2, R3/L3 (I know there are the Hori grips, but still...)
-Developers using Vita as a stretch goal for kickstarter, only to then cancel & offer the game on a different platform
-No Crisis Core on Vita

I saw an interesting Youtube video yesterday (a few years old now) that had a feature on why the author thought the Vita failed as a handheld console and it was something I hadnt considered before which I think might also be true for the switch.

In the video, the author explained that the usual handheld development model didn't necessarily apply with the Vita - that handhelds can't easily port titles from home consoles so are developed from scratch. Handheld games are also typically cheaper BUT the budgets of these are lower because of the hardware specs and can therefore be developed by smaller teams at lower cost and provide healthy revenue vs investment. The author argues that the Vita, with its promise of AAA home games on a mobile device required more development time. You couldn't port games but you also couldn't do a very cheap version. With not many titles, people were reluctant to invest putting off third party developments.

He also argued that unlike, say Nintendo, Sony chose not to bankroll lots of first party AAA titles to try and generate consumer demand quite early into the lifecycle, meaning third party developers had less interest.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

@KratosMD: Yeah you are right - I do think most of the big name 'ports' were actually pretty decent, it is just that they cost a lot to make and the never went on.

I tend to judge a system by how much cheap cash grabs have come out. If a console has a lot of licensed rubbish brought out or quick and dirty ports then you know the system has enough casual gamers to fall into the trap of buying them! Like the Wii, or GBA and DS (even the PSP to an extent).
