Topic: The Vita compared to the 3DS

I'm lucky in that I have both: first the 3DS, and now the Vita. Ever since I have the Vita I've been following the news about it, and I noticed that a lot of people are pessimistic about its future. So I asked myself, which do I like most, and why. I love them both, and they both go with me everywhere. But there are more things to consider:
The Vita versus the 3DS.

I have owned quite a few Gameboys over the years from the very first Mono screen version to the Colour - which I still have! I also had an Advance and Advance SP and finally a DSi - which my son now has after breaking his. I have never owned a Vita or any Sony handheld although have been tempted on a few occasions - most recently when they released Uncharted as well as a Resistance and Killzone game but couldn't justify the price tag for these considering my circumstances have changed. I never game anywhere other than at home and on Console so doubt a Vita would get used.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

I'm much more familar with 3DS, but my observations so far....

3DS = great form factor, the XL models are well built......lack of third party support outside of Japan, but a good array of Nintendo titlles. Library is a bit Platformer / RPG / action-adventure heavy. Graphically it's nothing amazing, like a slightly cleaner and superior PSP, but some games still look quite good. The New 3DS is by far and away the best model.

Vita = Superior hardware and multimedia capabilities, a little less travel friendly in comparison to the clamshell. Mostly indie and Japanese support from now on......but higher quality indies in comparison to the 3DS. A lack of first party support, but you do have a diverse array of genres covered that the 3DS is lacking in (fighting, racing, more action oriented titles). Remote play is mediocre while PS Now can be amazing if you pick the right title.

@BAMozzy, If you are all into console gaming then no doubt the Vita wouldn't get much use. I've had most consoles of Nintendo, but somehow I always turn to my handheld. I'm very much a gamer on the go!

@sub12 Interesting that you should feel that the Vita has a large array of genres covered. I think it's because of my gaming genre preferences that I see it differently. I'm much into adventure, simulation, puzzle and RPG. And especially sim games are few and very far in between on the Vita!

I see your point, but I think the 3DS has a pretty weak library when it comes to racing, fighting, and action titles.

Its not that I am into console gaming as much as have no opportunity or need to game on the move. When I have an opportunity to game, I am at home and therefore just turn on a console and game on a big screen. If I had a Vita, I can see it gathering dust.

I have both and love both but if I had to choose I guess I'll choose the 3DS because it has more exclusives, most of the Vita library can be found on PS3/4.... The Vita has P4G which is the greatest game of all time though

I have a 3DS and honestly I dont use it that much. I had a Vita for a bit but I ended up selling it to a friend at work. Nothing was bad with it just that I didn't use it much and he really wanted one. Now I am thinking of getting a PS TV so I guess I will play catch up on Vita titles that way.

GameBoy Advance over all of them, that thing was like the glory days of the 16 bit era recreated.

They're polar opposites, which makes it a very interesting comparison.

I don't have a Vita yet (really want one), but I absolutely adore my 3DS XL. One of the best pieces of gaming hardware I've ever bought. Love the library of games.

Before my 3DS broke I hardly touched the Vita. When I get a New 3DS in a few months I doubt I'll touch my Vita again sadly. My knowledge of Japanese means I can get more out of both consoles than most but I have to say, regardless of language, the Vita catalogue is barren compared to 3DS.

It depends on what your looking for, take a look at a game like Helldivers, does the 3DS have anything like that? Nope.....

To caveat, I I've enjoyed my 3DS very much so for the last four years, but it's lacking in some genres.

For the genres I'm looking for the 3DS feels more complete, but being able to play on both is even better! Best of both worlds.

Vita has a lot of ports of home console games I liked that I can take with me and play on a break at work or if I'm watching tv. Stuff like Mortal Kombat, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 and 2 Plus, God of War Trilogy, Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Muramasa Rebirth, Dragon's Crown, and MLB The Show. Then there's a few of its own games that stood out like Gravity Rush, Uncharted Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet Vita, Killzone Mercenary and AC 3 Liberation. And it's great for smaller/indie games with Retro City Rampage, Hotline Miami, Sine Mora, Guacamelee and Velocity 2X among my favorites. I'm much more of a PS4/Xbox One gamer but since I like home console games so much and I like having a fairly close experience to take on the go, I think I get more use out of the Vita than I would otherwise.
No question though on the whole 3DS has the better library. Take away some of the apps I have on Vita and I've probably put more time in on the 3DS. It's funny, though I'm more of a home console gamer, in regards to Nintendo it's the opposite. Gamecube, Wii and Wii U are fine systems but I'll take the GBA, DS and 3DS over them any day.

I own and love both but find it difficult to say which one is better purely on the basis that they're so different. One thing i would say is that this may be the last time for a while (ever!?) during which us fans have multiple dedicated handheld gaming consoles being produced and supported (depite what some would say about the vita!) which is definitely something to be appreciated while it lasts!

I have both, a Vita Slim and a New Nintendo 3DS XL, and I love them both. I like handheld gaming more than console gaming for the most part. I'd probably slightly prefer the 3DS over the Vita because I like its games and its ecosystem a little more, but the Vita is definitely better hardware.

3DS has Streetpass, which I love. Seeing that green light always puts me in a good mood. I also love the Sony trophy system though, so there's that. And because I also have a PS3 and a PS4, the Vita has extra value with its cross-buy and cross-save functionalities. Though with OlliOlli and Mario v. DK: Tipping Stars, the 3DS/Wii U are seeing some of that now.

The most important difference to me is that most of 3DS' best games are 3DS exclusives, whereas a lot of my favorite Vita games are available on other platforms (though I may prefer them on my Vita). So you can still play a lot of Vita's best games, even if you don't have a Vita, whereas you can't say the same thing for 3DS.

You really can't go wrong with either, assuming you are interested in their respective libraries.

True, @Topperware, if people love handheld gaming like I do too, and if you can afford it, I'd say go for both. In a lot of forum I tend to see comments from people putting down the one system versus the other. I don't like that, I think they can exist perfectly well together.
The Streetpass is one of my personal favorites, remember the first ever green light! Now that was a big occasion! I had hoped Near would be something like that, but it's not. A pity though that Sony wants to stop with Near.
