@kyleforrester87 Yes they could if they could put the same amount of effort into there stories and characters that they do for their fan service most of them could even leave niche status

69 pages is impressive. Final Fantasy 12 had 46 Pages and ff13 had 51. but by the time we got to Final Fantasy XV we had no instruction manual. The same is true of almost all PS4 games. @themcnoisy

@Frigate Thats about the time it takes square enix to release anything nowadays

@themcnoisy I think it has more to do with the Japanese market. I remember reading somewhere that Japan likes to remember the more fun or carefree days of their youth in anime and games than they like stuff about adults.

@Jaz007 That needs to change. Kids these days get everything. Lol.

@themcnoisy I’m still young enough that it doesn’t bother me. FFXV comes across as young (or transitioning) adults to me so it feels like they’re about my peers or close enough.

I don't think there is a problem.

i just wish most jrpgs still had the charm and magic of games like Secret of Mana Threads of Fate Suikoden Skies of Arcadia Shadow Hearts or even Grandia and Wild Arms there are some Gems out today but not as many as we used to get

@Frigate i’d love to play SoA again 😬

@Kidfried I do agree generally, it’s not that JRPGs are bad these days, to me this topic is more about “why is final fantasy not as popular as it used to be” and that’s down to both changing tastes and SE being pretty rubbish with the franchise.

For me they are just too big. 100+hr games are just unreasonable for myself. Also nearly every other game claims to be an "rpg" is one way or another now mainly because of the grind and the, as mentioned, ridiculous amount of time needed to just play the story.

i'm another that thinks they're often just too big. for me, horizon zero dawn was just about the perfect length, and that had great combat. for skyrim, i got bored of it about 65 hours in.. the gameplay is pretty clunky imo, and even after 65 hours, there were just so many icons on the map, quests listed in the log, with no obvious means of telling which is the optimal order to do things without go back and forth over the map several times. i actually find having several quest narratives often struggles to tell a compelling overall narrative (that you might get from shorter or linear games), as the pacing can be all over the place depending on what you decide do. often the gameplay loop just isn't fun enough (skyrim, witcher 3, assassin's creed origins), in my opinion, to play it for a 100+ hours.

Alot of Rpgs today are more of Collectathon and Grindfest Variety to mostly pad out game time and to keep you from finshing the game to fast

Too big isn’t really a problem for me, if a game is fun I’ll just keep playing it. The problem is most long games stop being fun.

For me there is not enough jam in JRPG's. That is what the J stands for after all.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@kyleforrester87 Are you sure about that? So it is not Jam Rocket Propelled Grenades them?

In all seriousness I much prefer western ones. I think I just out grew JRPG's in the end and I found all too similar to play and story wise. Whenever I play one these days I always seemed to get annoyed by some gameplay element or by the characters/story.

@Areus Haven't they always been, though? Even the classic games we consider the best of all time, like the older Final Fantasy games and such, have involved a lot of grinding or terribly camouflaged padding.

@Frigate the big difference with Pes is you can have 1 game, which then turns to 4 or 5. With RPGs you need to commit so much time before even switching it on.

I think my mate @hego once summarised this well when we were chatting about big games. What did you say again Shane as I can't remember?
