TL;DR - Whats your top 10 PS1/PS2 remasters you'd like to see for PS5

There are so many amazing PS1 and PS2 games, certainly of which included a lot of the golden era of JPRG games.

And what with FFVII remake at fever pitch, and games such as RE2 smashing sales, with RE3 soon to follow, as well as games like Crash Bandicoot, and CTR being a resounding success. It's clear remakes are big business right now. Moving into the next gen I forsee opportunity for some classics to be completely remade for the current generation.

My immediate list would be JRPG heavy, but if I had to name a top 10, this would be them:

1) Xenogears (PS1)
Classic JRPG, and one of my personal favourites. Compelling story, and would look amazing with all the bells and whistles that the modern console could deliver.

2) Legend Of Dragoon (PS1) (Bluepoint rumour speculation for PS5 release)
Another JRPG classic, and one that could be an interesting remake if delivered. The combat, and story arc always seemed unique to me versus other games in this genre.

3) Vagrant Story (PS1)
This has such amazing potential to be an amazing remake, and I could see it really resonating with RPG fans of today, if it was modernized and brought up to speed.

4) Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
It's either this or IX, but lets be honest, if we're going to do this (and if VII remake sells buckets), we may as well do it in order

5) Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen (PS1)
A lost gem, and in my opinion much better than the soul reaver games. If done with a witcher-esque type delivery, could be a very successful remake

6) Tenchu: Stealth Assasins (PS1)
Still one of the best when it comes to stealth games, and I think could potentially be a smash hit if it was modernized and re-released.

7) Driver (PS1)
Often a criminally underated title (including it's sequel), but definitely a game that could be interesting with options for gameplay that are now available with the modern era.

8) SSX Tricky (PS2)
C'mon, you know this game was immensely fun. And, whilst I enjoyed Steep, it was a little too serious for me, and couldn't bring the thrill that SSX Tricky used to bring. One of the few PS2 games I really think a remake could be explosive for. Could even bring back part of Run DMC for the tracks

9) Breath Of Fire III (PS1)
One of, it not my favourite game from the golden era. It holds a special place in my heart, and so does the music, the vibe, and the whole experience back when it was released. I'm not sure how a remake could be done, whilst still managing to capture the essence of the game. But in honesty I'd be happy with a quality 2D over 3D remaster for this, with remastered OST, I would treasure it!

My list is mostly PS1 heavy, and mostly JRPGS, but I think that's mainly because PS2 games would mostly be remasters rather than remakes, but for me the idea of some of these classic gems being remade with the most modern graphics, and delivering a similar experience, with cutting edge storytelling and gameplay would be an exciting prospect.

Let's see what your list would be, and reasons why you would want those games?

OFFICIAL TOP TEN REMAKE LIST

1. Silent Hill - I love the original Silent Hill. I know 2 is the most popular, but my favourite was always the first game. It was the scariest game I ever played. Probably still is. Killer soundtrack. Great atmosphere. Story is just the right amount of figure it out yourself. Proper horror game. I just want the RE2 treatment for it.

2. Metal Gear Solid - I would actually like them to remake MGS1, 2, and 3, but I want the first game the most because a) it's the best, and b) it's the most in need of a remake. The story is still good, and still better than most games that come out today. It just needs a graphical overhaul and some gameplay updates cause I don't know if you played it recently but DAMN.

3. SSX3 - SSX3 was legit one of my favourites on PS2. I loved how you did various courses all on the same mountain and then they started joining up to make longer courses and then they all joined up to make one massive course. I also loved having a bunch of different characters and being able to unlock loads of new clothes for them. The SSX reboot sucked, so do the series right and bring back 3. Keep the sountrack, too. No dubstep.

4. Kurushi - This game doesn't really need a remake/remaster since it's so simple and playable, but I would like one all the same. Trophies, online leaderboards, more stages, etc. It's just a great puzzle game.

5. Persona 3 - Basically I just want a version of Persona 3 with trophies, but if we're throwing remakes around then sure. Persona 3 is super cool in an incredibly nerdy sort of way, and while I prefer 4 and 5, I'd still like to experience it all again.

6. Vib Ribbon - I really liked Vib Ribbon, so I would totally have it back with a modern spin. Just hook it up to Spotify rather than CDs and Bob's your uncle.

7. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars - Broken Sword is one of my favourite games of all time. It really is. I tweet Revolution once a year asking them to bring the game to PS4 with trophies. Still haven't. While I'd totally love the original as it is on PS5 - backwards compatibility? somehow with trophies? - let's just remake the whole thing. No 3D, no massive changes, no silliness. Just the original game, with the original script, and I'm all over it.

8. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Vice City is objectively the best GTA game. Everyone knows it. If anyone doesn't know it, they're wrong. Blasting down the road in fake Miami listening to Run To You by Bryan Adams? Cutting Crew? Toto? Loads of other '80s classics? Smashed it. I'd want the full remake treatment with this. Jazz the story up. Make the world bigger. Keep the soundtrack. Add more radio stations. No Journey.

9. Theme Park - Theme Park was absolutely radical, and it annoys me that there's been no new games in forever. There was that awful mobile version where you had to wait a day or pay £12 every time you wanted to put another bit of path down, but that needs napalming. I want a proper Theme Park game. This is surely due a remake/reboot.

10. Burnout 3 - As a general rule I don't like racing games except Mario Kart, but I absolutely loved Burnout 3. It was a near perfect arcade racer with awesome crashes and the fantastic crash mode. I never felt like they got this right again. 4's crash mode was rubbish and by the time we got to Paradise... well, I'm not having that. Open world racers? Driving myself to the race? That's like having a level in Uncharted where we have to take Nathan Drake through airport security before he gets his flight to Peru. Get in the sea.

I'd like to see Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 remake.

Can't wait for PS5!

@johncalmc Silent Hill fell just short of my top 10. I'd definitely love to see a remake of the first Silent Hill as well. Banger of a game.

Also with you on the Vice City and Theme park remakes. I love both of those.

Doubtful Theme Park would make it seeing as Bullfrog long have since been dismantled. Although maybe the IPs are owned my Lionhead studios these days? I think they're defunct as well though XD

Can't believe I'm gonna be the first to say Syphon Filter.

Stealth action games of the Metal Gear and Splinter Cell variety have had plenty of success, if not this generation then recently enough. I think it's time for something a bit more arcade-y yet still in a similar vein, with feel-good accessible controls and a plot all about a conspiracy wrapped in a coat, wrapped in an enigma. Something kinda like Uncharted via Tom Clancy.

Bonus points for the mention of Vib Ribbon by @johncalmc and for @redd214 name-dropping Dino Crisis, both of which I think could be given a real interesting modern spin.

A Persona 3 DE needs to happen. Unify the additions and improvements of P3P with the generally improved presentation and second campaign of FES.

@johncalmc If you own a GameCube, MGS: The Twin Snakes might be worth looking into. Obviously it still looks ancient compared to modern gen, but the presentation is significantly better than what we got with the PS1 original. Also, some small gameplay improvements that put it more in line with the PS2 games.

@RogerRoger with the success of RE2 Remake and the buzz around re3, it'd be foolish of them not to bring the back.

  • Although the chances are virtually nil, It would be wonderful to get a remake of Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It's one of the PS2's very best RPGs, yet practically no-one played it. Although set against the serious backdrop of WW1 Europe, there are massive amounts of silliness scattered throughout, from a vampire pro-wrestler to a gigantic pink cat named Andre. The battle system is excellent; although turn-based there is a real time element where each action triggers a radiating dial, which keeps the player on their toes.
  • Dragon Quest VIII recently had a 3DS demake of sorts. Although there's lots of modern quality of life improvements and new content that would be great to carry over, it also looks and sounds considerably worse than the original Western PS2 release. A remaster that brings the spectacle of the original and its large world into the modern day would therefore be brilliant.
  • Metal Gear Solid. I only played this for the first time in 2018. Although it's obviously dated in many ways, I loved its story and appreciated how far ahead of its time the gameplay and cinematic presentation must have been in 1998. I was even surprised to find that I liked its visual style, excellent as it is "for a PS1 game". A full, modern remake could be absolutely amazing.
  • Mystical Ninja Starring Goeman is a hidden gem within the N64's library. It's completely insane - the villains, who have landed on Edo Castle, are aliens who want to turn the world into a giant stage so they can perform their naff opera. Makes sense. It's Goeman's job to travel around the Zelda-esque world, armed with little more than a kendama, and rid Japan if this menace. The music is also ace!
  • Persona 3. It's a brilliant entry in the series, but one that has quite likely been overlooked by many gamers owing to its late-PS2 and pre-Persona 4 Golden era release. I still maintain it has the best story of the modern Persona games, and a very dark atmosphere that wasn't really replicated in either 4 or 5. The music is quite unique too. Like @Ralizah, I'd like to see any remake/remaster incorporate the additional content from FES and P3P.

Not a fan of remakes generally, I'd rather the time, money and resources be spent on new games. If i have to choose a ps1 or ps2 game it would be Metal Gear Solid, but I would be more intrested in the games i missed out on PS3 like Demon Souls, MGS IV and the Resistance series.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@johncalmc Vib Ribbon? Blimey, that's a blast from the past!

And the correct answer to this question is Hogs of War.

@Ralizah I don't own a GameCube any more, but even if I did I couldn't stomach Twin Snakes. I know a lot of people moaned about how the FPS gameplay imported from MGS2 ruined the maps that were designed without it in mind, but I honestly didn't care about that. Not bothered about how easy the game is. It was the cut-scenes that wound me up.

I'm a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series - warts and all - and the direction by Ryuhei Kitamura was just way too much. Part of the appeal of Snake was that yeah he's a super soldier, but he's also a grizzled, I'm too old for this, coming out of retirement for one last job grump going up against soldiers that are experts - sometimes supernaturally so - in their craft. Watching him backflip over bullets and stand on top of in flight missiles ruined the character for me.
