Topic: Using cheats in Final Fantasy 9

I was playing Final Fantasy 9 and spent some time grinding outside of Oliviert. When I got to Desert Palace I had to use the other half of my party and they were very under leveled. I grinded for a while in the same room fighting the same enemies but got bored and it was taking up too much time (Free time that I don’t have a lot of). So I turned on the 9,999 HP kill cheat and just sped up leveling up dramatically. Did I ruin the game experience by doing this? It was the same enemies I was fighting before in the same room but I figured this would save a lot of time because the grinding got really tedious. Has anyone else used cheats like this in the game while grinding?

Hmm. FF9 is my personal favourite game of all time. On the PS One I didn't feel that grinding was a chore - there are moments where you can do it somewhat quickly, the first being the Evil Forest early on in the game. Of course the original didn't have cheats. I did however turn on some cheats (not the 9999 kill cheat though lol that's a little too game breaking) when I bought it for the PC and PS4, and it didn't ruin anything for me, the story is still fantastic.

If it's not your first time playing I don't see anything wrong with turning on cheats to forego the grind, but if it's your first time, maybe it takes away a little bit from the experience. But like I said the story is still there.

EDIT: Also, first time players won't know that the game will make you play with characters who have been absent for most of the story. Only the second time round will you know to buy and store weapons and items to give to them for when that happens. So I don't blame you for wanting to skip the grind.

Thank you for your feedback. Yeah the battles I used the 9,999 damage cheat were for the same enemies I was fighting in Desert Palace for almost 2 hours grinding but was fed up with the constant mustard bombs (Instant KO), vanish and one of the enemies was always taking very little damage in physical attacks. So I figured it would speed things up since I was fighting the same enemies so it’s nothing I’m really missing out. The imbalance in my party members’ levels was from characters that constantly drop out of the game for extended time such as Steiner resulting in them being very under leveled.

I figured speeding up some of the grinding would save me some time due to my gaming time being pretty limited. I have a backlog of games to get through including most of the Final Fantasy games. The only ones I have beaten are FF4 and FF10. I am near the end of FF6 in Kefka’s tower but stopped playing it because I got lost in the level and got bored of it. I also had to restart FF7 because I couldn’t get out of the crater and was low on supplies. I couldn’t defeat Sephroth because I was unable to level up due to supplies running out (Enemies in crater use frequent KO attacks) and I couldn’t get out of crater to replenish them. I could not climb back up after putting the save crystal after the area where my party has to split up.
