To all members here, I would like to become the technical adviser here on the site. I have a good amount of advise to offer here to people who have technical questions that I can answer that others can not answer. I happily offer my advise on issues technical so I can help you solve your issues. Please feel free to ask and I will do my very best to answer your inquiries. Thank you for your support.

That's nice of you to offer help to people with techical issues as long as you don't discuss anything like hacking systems and stuff that may void warrenties I don't think it will be a problem.

@Tasuki: Well considering that I know next to nothing about hacking, other than it's usually done by people who really need something more to do with their time, I will not take to advise people on that front. As such, I also do not condone violating warranties either. But, yes, if I can be of some legitimate help to people, then they may feel free to avail themselves of my aid, should the need arise.

Yep discussion about emulators, roms and other such devices is against the rules here. -Tasuki-

@Tasuki can we update the rules to be more specific on this matter? Because every time anyone mentions roms / emulation it gets shut down straight away, when the rules https://www.pushsquare.com/rules state that discussion of roms / emulation is acceptable, as long as it is in the context of previous generations hardware and as long as the discussion doesn't involve linking to sites where software could be downloaded illegally.

Seeing as the practice of software emulation itself is perfectly legal assuming you own a legitimate copy of the software, this would make sense to me, but currently that isn't how it seems to be being handled.

If it's easier to just put a blanket ban on those sorts of conversations, that's fair enough, but I think we could do with the site rules being updated to more clearly reflect that.

Cheers

@SteveButler2210: Emulation is a grey area most people believe oh as long as I have the original copy of the game I can download the rom, err no that's sadly not the case. If you have an original copy of the game, then what you can do is a rom dump, that is where you use a device, to make a copy of the rom and put it on your PC, SD card etc. It doesn't give you the right to go to websites and download roms or distribute them across the internet.

But I digress. My stance on it is even for older systems software, I don't like to have it discussed here reason being people see we are discussing Genesis emulators for example then they start discussing how they modded their Vita to play Genesis roms. Ok so is that within the rules? It's emulating an older system but it's on a current console see what happens then?

Also I don't want arguments cropping up as to is emulation legal is it not, why we should do it why we shouldn't all that stuff.

Lastly and this is the big one all rom sites are illegal. I don't want to give people the impress that Pushsquare endorses that kind of thing by allowing users to discuss it. Honestly if you need advice for that sort of thing there are aplenty of places to go for that sort of thing here in my opinion is not one of them.

That's my stance on it but I will discuss it with Sammy when I get back in a few days (I am out of town currently but just popped on to see what's happening) and see what's his stance on it and go from there.

Thanks for understanding

@Tasuki: That's fair enough, to be perfectly honest I do understand and by and large agree with your reasons for not wanting discussion of emulation on the site - I just thought it was worth flagging that it could be more clearly specified in the site rules, where the current wording leaves things a bit ambiguous re what can and can't be discussed.

Now that's cleared up, and so as to try and bring the topic back on track a little, I just want to say thanks @SaiyanFury for the offer, I'm sure most of us could use a little techy advice every now and then! Out of interest, and so people know a bit more about what questions to come to you with, what is your technological background / do you have any particular areas of expertise?

General electronics and such. I've been mucking about with PCs back since I was a kid in the 1980s, so generally in that area. I've never worked with Apple computers since I'm staunchly anti-Apple and their totalitarian business model. But, I was also about 7 years old when I discovered that by running our OTA antenna through my dad's new VCR with it's digital number selection, we were able to use it to tune channels through it with it's remote and not have to get up to change the channel every time. Something my dad would not have discovered otherwise. Even in the 80s, I abhored the idea of pay-for telly, and that pervades my views to this day. My wife and I are constantly pestered by cable and satellite companies to subscribe and we repeatedly tell them we are cable cutters. Pardon the small rant, please, haha. I've also set up a number of home theatre receivers, lots of consoles and system switches, and installed car stereos. I am not a phone zombie as I don't bury my nose in my phone for 15 hours per day. I know how they work, but I limit my use to light duty. Same for tablets; I possess one, but it rarely gets used unless it's for late night, in-bed, Netflix watching so as I don't wake my wife. I hope that helps.
