Note: I'm talking about services like Loot Crate and the like (can't think of a better catch all term for them).

Anyhow, if you currently (or in the past) have subscribed to one of these services, maybe users could show off what they've gotten, which services are reliable, etc.

With some of my tax return I've subscribed to Japan Crate (a Japanese snack subscription box, that usually has various candies, chips, and a drink) & Umai Crate (an instant noodle, and instant noodle accessory, box by the same company). I've heard nothing but good things so I'm pretty excited, and my first boxes should be getting here mid-late April.

It'll never happen, but I'd like to get the Sugoi Crate just once. It's a special box they send to one subsriber each month that has a bunch of collectables in addition to the standard snacks (I think March's had a Pikachu Edition New Nintendo 2DS, Kirby Battle Royal, Gundam model kit, Japanese castle model kit, Luffy (One Piece) figure, and Hello Kitty & Shin Chan plushies).

So anyone else subscribe to a similar service, and if so, how'd it go?

@RR529 Glad your enjoying that. I put my money in savings bonds. The benefit of them is the savings always make interest (very low right now tbh) and there are cash prizes drawn at random.

To be fair I dont understand the demographic for these physical lootcrates, if you want noodles - Just buy noodles as they are really cheap and the money you save will inevitably lead to a 2ds/ps4/other boss bit of tech anyway. The additional money for the loot crates is being pilfered somewhere in the chain and for every winner there will be a ton of losers.

I have always wanted to sub to something like Loot Crate but in the end it's just more trinkets and such that I really don't need or have the room for.

About the closest thing like that I do have a membership for is Blue Apron which I love. The recipes have for the most part been really good only had a couple that I didn't like and making them is super simple.

The only one I tried is from Zavvi. T-shirt and a book/graphic novel. The t-shirts were kinda cool with unique prints, but they were only in black so I stopped. I think the appeal is the not knowing exactly what you are gonna get. I've had no urge to try another as @themcnoisy said if I want something I'll just go out and buy it.

Yeah, I understand that they're upmarked a bit, and it'd be cheaper to dig around and order specific items yourself, but I've never had any Japanese snacks before so I really don't know what I'd like, so this'll give me a chance to try some things out, with as @JohnnyShoulder said, the anticipation/fun of never knowing what it is you'll get. Only got a one month subscription, and while it does renew, I can cancel at anytime if I don't like it.

Also, I certainly didn't subscribe with the intention of winning the collectables box (I know my chances are astronomical), it's just a fun what if to think about. Also, The good thing about this one being food based is that I won't get cluttered up with a bunch of trinkets.

I don't bother myself but worse things to waste money on I guess. Like PS+ the past few months which is kind of a digital loot box I guess.

Both of my boxes arrived this week!

Everything in this month's snack crate is either Cherry, Strawberry, or Peach flavored (a cascade of pink packages to coincide with the springtime blooming of the Cherry Blossoms, I assume). It even has a bottle of peach flavored Coca-Cola (a Japan exclusive flavor) I can't wait to try! The only thing I've had so far was a mini chocolate/strawberry flavored candy in the shape of a piece of cake, which was pretty good (I'm going to work my way up to the larger items as I go along).

My instant noodle box had 4 bowls, 3 packets, and a little knick knack for resting chopsticks on. So far the only thing I've had is a bowl of Yuzu flavored Udon, which was really good!

I've bought a couple of book subscription boxes through this site: https://www.uopen.com/ and it's been pretty good, boxes have come in good time and the contents has been worth the money.

Still subscribe to the main Japan Crate (though I skipped July to have more money for fireworks), but I've cancelled my Umai Crate subscription (I just don't eat instant noodles enough for it to be worth it).

So I recently got a few boxes from a company called Zobie Productions (Not sure if the do international shipping as of now). Each month they put out a few boxes a horror themed box with trinkets and stuff based on horror franchised such as Halloween or Friday the 13th and such. Their main catch though is that one of the items is official signed and certified.

One of the boxes they do is called a Rasslin Box which as a WWE fan I am sucker for so I decided to buy this months box which I got today.

Inside was a pack of sealed WCW trading cards from the 90s.
A Ceasero arm band
A.pack of WWE Stickers

And the signed item was an 8X10 of Shinsuke Nakamura.

Very pleased with it and it cost me $35 plus shipping.

i used to subscribe to the ZBox from Zavvi but most of the time the stuff i got wasn't great so i decided to drop it

personally i don't think they are worth a subscription but buying the odd one depending on theme would be fine

Still get my Japan Crate subscription, BTW. They've been really good at getting the boxes to me in time, and the one time it was going to be late (because their shipping lines got disrupted by a big typhoon) they informed me via email.

It's still cool to try things we don't get over here, and naturally while I don't like everything, it's still more hit than miss in my experience with some cool treats (they seem to be pushing pretty hard with more themed crates in general too. June was My Hero Academia, August Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, October Halloween, November Pac-Man, and December Christmas).

I just ordered the Gamers Mystery Box from Zobie Productions. The featured franchises are Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, Sonic and The Legend of Zelda. It has a guarantee autograph from one of those franchises and some trinkets and other things as well. Will post pictures when it arrives!!!

So I got my Zobie Gamer's Box today and I am pleased with it. I got the following

A signed picture of Bowser from the Voice Actor
A print of Link
A pin of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat
An exlcusive resin figure of Sonic's gloved hand coming out of a gold ring

Not bad at all for $40

@Tasuki Wow that sucks. I have always wondered how the business model works. I guess a lot is them being able to get a good deal from suppliers to then get some economy of scale to send these. Sounds like a lot of people will not get their final bits.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

Recently decided to end my Japan Crate subscription. Nothing against the service itself, which was fantastic, but I've had it for over a year & am just looking to spend money in other ways for awhile. I totally recommend it to anyone looking to try out Japanese treats.

I'm getting a bit backed up anyways & still have things from as far back as June I haven't eaten yet.

So the past few months In have been subscribing to a service called Retro Game Treasures. Basically for a different amount of money you get a box containing some games from retro systems. I believe it's from Atari all the way up to Xbox/PS2/GameCube. You make a profile on their site listing all the games you own (so you don't get repeats) as well as what systems and genres you want. For example I am asking for Sega Genesis, Sega Master Systems and Sega CD games. You can even ask for demo discs and what not.

Anyway I have been paying the lowest tier which is $40 I do believe and have got a few good games. The first box I got contained Mortal Kombat, Lion King and WWF Royal Rumble for the Genesis and Super Hang On for the Masters System. Last month had Mortal Kombat II, Toy Story, and Jurassic Park for Genesis and Night Trap for the Sega CD.

Today I received my latest box and I got a C.I.B. copy of NBA Jam on Genesis along with loose cartridges of Eternal Champions and Greendog. I also got a C.I.B. copy of Double Dragon on the Masters System. By far the best month so far.

Overall I am pleased with the service and is a nice substitute for not having retro game conventions around due to COVID. Recommend for someone who wants to add to a game collection for a small price.
