"Back in my day, we PLAYED games, we didn't WATCH them!!!" -me

I must be old, because this newfangled trend of watchin' streams is something I just DON'T understand the appeal of! I only know 2 people who watch streams, and they're 9 and 11 years old (which accounts for 100% of the kids I know), and I figure they do it because they can't buy the games themselves.

But streaming is much bigger than that, with all the articles and culture surrounding them that I see every day on gaming websites. Aside from little kids, I know lots of adults must watch streams, and that they MUST be more than just what they appear at face-value: some dude playin' a game.

So...what streams do YOU watch? Any recommendations? And what am I missing here...what's the appeal?

Make it a great day!

I think for this generation it's the same as when I was a kid/teenager and my friends and I would gather at one of our houses and watch one of us play a game. With streams like on Twitch there is usually a chat room for viewers to chat and basically hang out much like preinternet we would hang out at someone's house as I stated above.

Some people enjoy watching a stream to get a better look at a game especially if it's a title that they are on the fence about and still others might watch it to see how to get pass a particular hard part.

The only streamer I currently watch is Cryaotic.
He's very entertaining and he has a weekly group Saturday stream which are fun.
He also does a monthly group Rockband stream which I never miss.

As far as games go...
I don't tend to watch many playthroughs as they are usually about games I'm interested in.
However lately I've become really hooked on his (cry) playthrough of Kingdom Come Deliverance.
That's a game that just seems too cumbersome to play, but it makes for an excellent watch. Think I've watched about 30 hours worth already.
Unfortunately he's put the Let's Play on hold as he was starting to run into too many bugs.

Yeah i don't get watching streams of other play people playing games. Just play the thing yourself if you wanna experience it.

I can enjoy watching a stream of a game I'm never going to play (again), while I'm playing a few games of Gwent or doing the dishes, or something.

Recently I've enjoyed Kyle Bossman's (former GameTrailers, current Easy Allies) SSX streams a lot. Those are games I won't pick up again anytime soon, but they are nice to enjoy on a lazy sunday.

I'd never prefer watching someone playing a game over playing it myself, though. Might just be me getting really old.

The main types of streams I watch are speed runners, and the 2 main channels I watch are Munchakoopas, he does speed runs of all the Shovel Knight campaigns, and Werster, who usually does Pokémon or Sonic speed runs. I don’t watch their streams all the time, but it’s always a good time when I do.

@Kidfried I’ve not been into watching streams but have recently started listening to gaming podcasts in the car or while doing mindless work like that. Easy Allies is probably one of my favorites I’ve found so far. I like their chemistry and camaraderie. My main complaint is that they are pretty heavy on the Nintendo talk and PlayStation doesn’t get as much attention usually. I know we had a thread about podcasts before and that’s why I gave E.A. a try because someone mentioned them. Kyle and co. are a pretty fun lot.

@Th3solution I like watching podcasts as I'm coming to my senses on a weekend morning. Pretty Good Gaming I like as they are from the UK and enjoy the banter between em. They also come across as pretty normal folk.

@Th3solution They used to talk about PlayStation way more, but like everywhere on the internet, it's all Nintendo now.

I watch streams on a regular basis. It's always of games I enjoy watching but don't enjoy playing, or don't intend on playing. The personality of the player is crucial, it's not just about the game itself.

These are the streamers I follow, they focus on horror games ... but are not the loud "screamer" types:

GG Gab: https://www.youtube.com/user/GirlGamerGaB

It's a shame there are so few console streamers around, it's all about PC it seems. There's RadBrad of-course, but I don't particularily like his personality.
