@CountFunkula78 Agreed on Smash Bros, I could never get into it either. I tried the N64 one and then most recently the Wii U one and just couldn't see the appeal of it.

I've never managed to get into the Fallout games, no matter how highly praised they may be. I gave Fallout 3 a shot and played about an hour before dropping off, same with Fallout 4. I played some of the main and side quests in 4, then got to the stuff with the settlement building and that was the first point when I started to think the game perhaps wasn't for me.

I tend to do that with open world games in general, with very few exceptions. I far prefer a more linear game with a good story (the recent Tomb Raider reboot games have been perfect in this regard - a clear linear story, but with some side missions and enough room to explore).

Wind Waker - The graphics didn't bother me, but the gameplay and camera work did. Link felt like a tank in terms of minute platforming angles. The sailing was boring, the game itself was easy, and the triforce hunting really annoyed me. Definite bottom 5 Zelda game for me.

Journey/Limbo - Ugh, two of those games that everyone on the internet hyped up, and not a single person I know in real life enjoyed. I watched a friend play Journey for a couple hours, and we both were just not impressed with what we had seen. Limbo was to me a mediocre puzzle game.

Splatoon - The whole 90's vibe this game throws off was immediately annoying to me. I didn't enjoy the control scheme at all. Online battles took what felt like 5-10 minutes to connect, and the two times I played were during event weekends when everyone was playing. Just didn't click with me at all.

Well let's run down the list:

Crash Bandicoot 1 - It has some design choices that are infuriating (Gems/Saving) and some stiff control
Super Mario 64 - Odd Quirks, Inconsistent, tedious at points, overly frustrating at others, and archaic
3D Zelda games - Something has never "clicked" with me. Maybe it's the slowness? Long intros? Something turns me off.
Pokémon G/S/HG/SS - Not a fan of the variety of encounters, or how the level structure works, which remains low for wild Pokémon even after you've passed the "Do these 3 gyms in whatever order" part, which ALSO makes no sense, as it can go from a Lv 30 Gyarados, to Lv15 Team Rocket, back up to mid 30s Ice Types. And that's intentional.
Modern Naughty Dog titles (Uncharted and onward) - There is something about the camera perspective and the way the games tell their story that feels....like it doesn't sit with me. It's why the new Tomb Raiders also didn't click, and why the new God of War is basically a ND game to me. Something about it feels wrong. Not like its bad, but the view obstruction of the character and the slow plodding and talking puts me off.

And then there are the list of games that I can appreciate but just cant get into: 3D Rare stuff, Persona, Fire Emblem, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, Donkey Kong Country, Little Big Planet, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Undertale, Earthbound, Kid Icarus, Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Shadow of the Colossus....the list goes on.

And its not like any are bad. They just either don't click with me, or some do end up being let downs from all the hype.

It's why I have a rule: If I like it, its probably bad, if I don't enjoy it or see the appeal, its probably the best mass market thing yet.

@BLP_Software So what you're saying is you don't like games? I never got on with any of the Pokemon games though, I was a bit too old for the cartoon when it first hit the UK and the games felt like a grind.

@euant For what it's worth Fallout NV was, for me, the better game out of the first person ones as it actually felt like a Fallout game.

@toon_lonk1 I tried to like the Gears games, but never really got on with them either for pretty much the reasons you listed.

@BAMozzy I actually got on OK with the first Witcher game way back when it was released, but I took a break from it and couldn't remember what I was up to in the city so never got further. Not sure if I'd still enjoy it, or if my tastes have changed (I do remember invisible walls being particularly anoying in it though). I really don't know why the third game didn't click with me though.

@Dichotomy I like games. I'm just overtly critical of them and how they are designed.

Never liked the Metal Gear Solid franchise. I know they're all highly rated but I've tried 1, 2, and Twin Snakes and just didn't like them.

@Cosmic-K9 I wonder how you'd like MGS:V, as it's very different in its structure. I wasn't a fan of the early MGS games, but 5 was excellent.

@euant Depends on the kind of structure. I generally don't like the story in the MGS series so that turns me off. Not that it's bad it's just very uninteresting to me. I also don't like the tactical stealth gameplay or similar games that play like it. Sly Cooper is as tactically stealthy as I get. 😉

Ooh I'm gonna have a field day.

Metroid Prime - I actually thought this was pretty good from what I played. However it just felt like a lot of effort to play, and the idea of playing a whole like it wasn't too appealing to me.

Metal Gear Solid - Intriguing story, fun stealth, awful controls. Time has not been kind to this game. It was tolerable at first but worse and worse, and I couldn't even get past the first boss. Plus crawling through vents was horrible and tedious.

Mass Effect - Playing on the PS3 didn't help, but this game ran extremely poorly. Combat was dreadful, cover system was broken and generally controlled awfully. I don't think I need to say anything about the Mako.

Folklore - Seemed very interesting, has a great concept, story was intriguing but the gameplay eventually got so mindnumbingly boring. It didn't help you literally have to play though each level twice.

Red Dead Redemption - Oddly enough the only one I actually managed to finish of these, but I honestly think this is the most overrated game ever. Terrible controls (recurring theme here), shooting requires no thought because of how stupid the AI are, cutscenes were cringey, character models look awful, few likeable characters when everyone else is incredibly annoying, story failed to engage as it often consisted of Marshton being an errand boy, poor lighting is sometimes problematic in buildings and at night since you can barely see, weapons all felt very similar same leading to very repetitive combat for the most part, currency was useless since I managed to beat the game easily without buying anything, saving was needlessly long. To be fair I did have to go through it fairly quickly so I didn't do anything other than the main story, but as you can imagine I don't exactly agree with the 95% on metacritic and unanimous praise that this game gets.

The Bioshock Series - Just never clicked with me, I've tried and tried to like the first but I just get bored after 5ish hours and stop playing, I've also played the second for a couple of hours, I really should try them again as they pretty much get nothing but praise.

@inre035 Try the third one. I didn't like the first two but Infinite I enjoyed a whole lot more. That could have been due to the different setting.

@Tasuki Yeah must admit I've always thought Infinite looked great and more my cup of tea I've just shied away from it due to not liking the first. I think I will get 'The Collection' at some point and give them another chance.

@ZurapiiYohane XCX is one of those rare games these days that actually benefits from reading the manual. While the tutorials in the game give you a basic overview of the combat, it leaves out most of the more complicated stuff. While this could be seen as a good or bad thing (personally I'm happy my hand isn't held through the opening 10 hours while it explains everything), in this day and age of instantly accessible games it is an oversight that the game doesn't make it clear that you should read the manual if you want a smooth playing experience.

To me the game clicked almost right away. In a completely different way than I expected. I've been an FF fan for quite a while, and played most numbered entries (all but 3 and the onlines, plus a lot of spinoffs), usually prefer the more story driven games in the series.
With that said, the sense of adventure captivated me, my best memories of playing this game is my own adventures, the story we all know the flaws and all that, but just exploring by myself, finding new outposts, climbing the volcano way before I was urged to go there. Collecting all the soundtracks, doing hunts and stuff. I love it. I drove pretty much everywhere without fast travelling because I was so immersed into it.

@JoeBlogs The little I did play of Mirror's Edge I can say I had a similar experience, it seemed to be a game that was as much about repetition to learn the levels as it was about being skillful. As I say though I didn't play it all that much so I might be wrong.

Dichotomy

ThroughTheIris56

@JoeBlogs No that sounds about right. It is the sort of game were it's likely you'll die a lot and have learn by trial and error. You probably won't hear meany people complain because some don't mind that sort of design, whereas others will, I'm the former.

Funny, I have that with alot of popular games. I rarely hate them but they never feel as "absolutely amazing" as the mainstream critics make it out to be. That's why I overall prefer indies. There is one game that never clicked with me though.

Dark Souls 3. I'm a huge Souls fans and I've played and enjoyed every second of nearly every game and dlc in the series(Including demon Souls and Bloodborne) but I just absolutely loathe Ds3. Everyone says it's so good, some even say it's better than the first one, but personally I just feel really bored and empty while playing it. I don't even remotely feel like trying out the dlc.

I think some games just come at the wrong time. I played Witcher 3 shortly after finishing MGS V and One Piece pirate warriors 3 which are both Uber time consuming. I played for 3 hoursish and never picked it back up again as I was drained from gaming. So yeah timing is important.

More recently I've just finished P4G after 65+ hours, so after that sitting through a couple of days gaming on Mass Effect the writing was so bad in comparison I couldn't bear playing the game. If I hadn't played P4G so close to it I probably would have been more lenient.

Similar thing happened with demon souls, I was trophy hunting on the x360 at the time. I'd played a lot of games on hard to 1000g them and was so burnt on making limited progress over the last 6 or 7 games, I made it a few hours in and deleted it and started playing really short games for a while. Funnily I can remember trading in most of my games at this point and pretty much stopped gaming until I bought my PS4.
