Topic: What Game(s) Would Make you Buy a PS5?

I have a feeling that even if I don’t get a PS5 at lunch I’ll get a collection of PS5 games from PlayStation plus. I remember when the PS4 first came out you could add PlayStation four only games to your library on the PlayStation three but not PlayStation three only games on the PlayStation four.
Having a batch of games to start off with will definitely tilt me towards the PlayStation five.

@JohnnyShoulder The only 'negative' thing that remained from E3 was Kinect and that was gone within 6months. The first year or so was relatively strong for exclusives - stronger than Sony. As someone who is the middle, I can remember the comments that Sony fanboys were making about the lack of power and the Xbox fanboys retorting that power didn't matter, it was all about the games. I remember the comments against Sony with there Halo 'wannabe' and kiddy game, all that 'power' and no games - funny how 4yrs later the tables were turned...

Personally I couldn't care less what people bought - it doesn't have any impact on me or my gaming enjoyment. I can still play with friends and family regardless if which console they bought, still have the opportunity to play every game and 'more'. Still benefit from any advantages that one has over the other. I couldn't care less if someone else gets to play the same games I can play regardless of whether they are in the blue or green corner. It really makes absolutely NO difference to my gaming enjoyment at all.

All the animosity, whether its blue on green or green in blue just makes whomever look incredibly immature and petty - like little kids in the playground. I am only concerned about what I get to play, not what plastic box I get to play on. I am not concerned or bothered if others get to play the same games I do or not depending on their choice.

I can totally understand that a 'future' of just Halo, Forza and Gears would probably end up getting tired very quickly. I can see the future of just Killzone, Uncharted, Infamous and GoW could have been boring for some too - which is how it seemed at launch. At least Sony Devs tried to inject something into these - even trying something more ambitious in taking a 'known' quantity and redesigning it as Sony Santa Monica did with Gow. That is 'braver' than a new IP in my opinion as you risk upsetting the core fanbase - at least with a new IP, you start with a clean slate...

If it was that easy for you to abandon MS, then I guess there is that possibility coming up again if Sony initially mess up - even if they put things right (well as much as they can - a bit difficult to completely redesign your console to add that much more to it to compete on a 'hardware' level. Makes me wonder how bad things would be if they hadn't dropped Kinect and freed up more resources for games. MS 'could' compete on quantity of exclusives too for next gen with all their new studio's - some could be 'exciting' and fresh rather than more of the same.

I don't blame people for swapping, not at all this gen. The first 4yrs, even if it took a while for the exclusives to build up whilst MS's 'dried' up. For most people, they tend to buy a lot more multi-platform releases so it makes sense to buy the console that had the most headroom to add something extra, to potentially run better if not look better too. If it hadn't been £200 cheaper to buy an Xbox (with Kinect - a few months later and it would have been around £300 cheaper) to get the bundle and transfer up the DLC Season Pass and 12months of Gold I already had, I would certainly of bought a PS4 first. Half of my friends jumped across to PS4 too because games looked and/or ran better. They were aware that MS backtracked on everything (bar Kinect at that point) and a lot of my friends (mostly FPS gamers) were torn because they wanted Titanfall but couldn't put up with 720-900p for a 'next' gen console.

Anyway, we will see what happens. It doesn't bother me what people buy as I will end up with the same console with the opportunity to play the same games. It would suit me better if they have a staggered release date so I don't have to decide which to buy first - like last gen. On the one hand, MS will need to release sooner rather than later because of the XB1 and its inferior power which is showing in the games, but if they do plan to phase out the base and have the X as the 'base', especially now 'xbox' is just MS's gaming branch regardless of hardware, then Sony will need to first because their Platform is lacking in next gen features and has quite a sizeable deficit from Pro to X. The X has the 'potential' to be an 'entry level' console for next gen if it can be unleashed from the base XB1.

I hope its as easy for you to choose your next gaming platform. Personally, I would hope its 'difficult' because that would mean that both are quite evenly matched - not just in hardware specs but also in 'unique' software that people want to play. That would also mean the MS's investment into studios has paid off as well. If you only stick with Sony because its most convenient, rather than because they have a 'significant' advantage somewhere, that for me would be disappointing - although having the X, I would probably upgrade to PS5 first anyway as my Pro is pretty much a dust collector right now. Should get some use in April though.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

I can't believe I'm actually about to say this, especially considering I haven't even played the third game in the trilogy yet, but I'd totally get a PlayStation5 for Dragon Age 4 now.

@BAMozzy It did not matter that MS went back on almost everything from E3, for me the damage had already been done. The same with Kinect, I had already bought a PS4 by the time it was not made mandatory. I had pretty made my mind up by the time E3 happened, that was the final nail in the coffin. The Xbox exclusives may well have been well received, but I was so bored of mainly hearing about the holy trinity of Halo, Gears and Forza I desperately needed a change. Yes I know there were others, but those were the ones MS always seemed to be banging on about.

We are now in a world of people being offended for other people who they think should be offended, who arent offended.

@BAMozzy The Next Box feels more real at the moment than the PS5. Whether that’s just Microsoft of being more open and leaky I don’t know but I can certainly imagine the Next Box is being announced at E3 this year where is PS5 won’t be announced till next year at the earliest.
I could also imagine a more premium version of the Xbox Launching before the PS5 and budget Xbox when the new graphics technology is still prohibitively expensive for the Playstation.

I partly agree as MS have been the only one to have made a mention of their future at last years E3, the verbal confirmation that they were already working on their 'next' box whilst Sony have become far more reclusive, withdrawing from the media and social events. Its understandable why the 'next' box seems more 'real'. Add in the fact that several 'big' games announced for PS4 also seem somewhat 'distant' too, not having any confirmed release date (or even a release window), that too makes the PS5 seem somewhat further out. Other factors, like the continued sales of the PS4, stretching further ahead of the competition, the fact that games haven't dropped in quality and performance as much as the XB1 seems to have and the success of their own software with the critics makes it seem as if the PS4 has a lot more life in it and the 'need' for a PS5 less urgent.

I totally get all of that. I have said elsewhere that the XB1 needs to be replaced and/or retired as its clearly not up to the task of delivering the modern day games at a 'reasonable' level for a 'static/home' console. If it was portable, then that's a different matter as we see with the Switch. I do think that MS could and maybe will keep the 'X' as a entry model - allow games to release that specify the X as the 'minimum' required - something I can't see Sony doing with the Pro for example. It seems ridiculous to invest in so much of a leap - not just in numerical 'specs' but also in 'next generation' top level features like VRR for example or Dolby Atmos audio only to effectively kill it off when the base goes. There is a massive difference between the two. With the PS4 & Pro being much closer, if the PS4 can't run a game at 720p, the Pro won't run it at 1080p so Sony/devs can 'justifiably' say the game won't run at the minimum design standards (sub HD and sub UHD standards). If the base XB1 can't run a game at 720p, the X should still run a game at UHD level (unless its very CPU intensive). Its easy to see the Pro and PS4 finishing at the same time but it seems unlikely for the X and base XB1.

I still think Sony could release in November this year. We are seeing a decline in 'resolution' and/or performance. Before anyone says that resolution 'isn't' important, its a useful metric and 'part' of the visual quality. There is only so much you can turn down other metrics (shadow quality, shadow draw distance, texture draw distance, anti aliasing quality, ambient occlusion quality etc etc) to level that any lower, and they are 'off' and that is 'worse' than dropping the res down to try and keep the frame rates high enough to be playable. The fact that games as a whole, not including games tailor made to run at a specific metric for a specific set of parameters (ie exclusives), are having to sacrifice resolution (dynamically or even just scaled down), is indicative of the need to bring out a new console sooner rather than later. I will whole heartedly agree that MS, if they aren't separating the X off to become the 'new' entry model for Xbox and phasing out the OG/Slim XB1's, need to release sooner as the base is dropping off fast. If you take exclusives, Crackdown 3 would probably tell you they have more headroom left but we all know that's not a great looking game even if it does have a 'high' resolution compared to multi-platform releases - hence you cannot take Exclusive parameters and have to look at the multi-platform games. EVERY game is scaled down massively to run on base consoles. They are not scaling them up to Pro/X but taking a 4k, Ultra settings 60fps game and scaling it down, dropping the visual settings, capping the frame rate, capping the resolution and then building in dynamic scaling etc.

6yrs seems right to me too - 6yrs is a LONG innings by any standard for a console generation. With the Pro releasing after 3yrs, this would fall in the middle of the generation, as you would expect a mid-gen upgrade would. Its not too late that it forces people to upgrade straight away (or within the first 6-12mnths) before the console is literally 'dead', literally cannot run any thing new - The PS3 still had CoD and Fifa releases for a few years. Its a reasonable life span and has enough life left to see a smooth transition phase too. I want to play games like the Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima on a Console designed to run then at 4k and hopefully 60fps, not 1440/30 and see all the weaknesses like the 'ring' a few feet in front of you where shadows suddenly jump from low res rubbish to decent quality as you can see them do in GoT's last trailer. If I have to wait, so be it, but I am ready for Next gen now. The gulf between the Pro and X is much bigger than the difference between the XB1 and PS4 and that was bigger than a PS3 & XB360 combined - even if the numbers seem 'small' now its measured in Tflops. The difference between an XB1 and PS4 is 1.84 - 1.31 = 0.53Tflops or 530Gflops. The PS3 was 230Gflops and the XB360 was 240Gflops which combined = 470Gflops (or 0.47Tflops...). A Switch GPU, if using the same 32FP, can only manage 500Gflops (0.5Tflops) if running at max - which, being a console it doesn't and as such only manages 393Gflops when docked or 157when in portable mode. In other words, the PS4 is more than a Switch better than an XB1 in Graphical power!! That's not a 'little bit'!!!

Also why MS need to do something sooner than Sony - unless they gradually phase out the Slim and make the X the base...

@RogerRoger You're enjoying Dragon Age II then?

EDIT Yeah never mind, I've just seen the PS3 thread, that's a yes then. I liked the second one as well, but we'll discuss it when you're done.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

The PS4 has a decent number of exclusives, but they are all action games more or less, and I'm less and less interested in that. If there were a few more exclusives like Detroit or the Last Guardian I would be more interested in buying a PS5. If there's not, I don't think I'll buy one. These kind of games don't have the same broad appeal as an action game, and are less likely to be made. Yakuza was my biggest Playstation pull, but these will appear on PC as well, and I have a pretty good rig now. So for me there has to be a great deal more variety in the exclusives if I'm to buy a PS5.

Hmm, Resogun 2? Seriously though, I had a lot of fun with Resogun, was a great launch game. But hopefully the PS5 will launch with a bit more than the PS4 did.

A new Uncharted game, Spider-Man sequel, maybe a new Infamous.

Even the rocks do not recall.

@LieutenantFatman Resogun was a terrific game, in my view it was the best ps4 launch game! Can't imagine how good a sequel would look with the extra horsepower and 4k/HDR goodies!

A new DotHack would be cool. I'd also like to see a return of sony's other IPs like Jak and Daxter. Maybe a sequel to Flower or a medieval Final Fantasy game.
