Well it's that time. With the PS4 seeming to be ending its lifespan and rumors popping up about the PS5 I figured it was time that we have an official thread to discuss our hopes, wants, theories and guesses for the PS5 as well as have a place to discuss all the rumors flying around.

So feel free to discuss your hopes, dreams and wishes for the PS5 here!!!!

My PS4 backlog and wishlist will keep me busy until 2020. Call me when the PS5 will already be on sale, possibly with Bloodborne 2.

first off the thing i don't want is a heavy focus on streaming.
sure it can be an option but please keep the digital and physical sales the standard to buy games.

i do think that this time we might get real 4k with a focus on achieving 60fps. but i would not bet at all on 8k as that is just way to expensive and as of now a needless feature when 4k is just starting to realy set in.

either a gray or black console,nothing all that different for the controler exept no more speaker,since it is mostly just a novelty feature since most players have headsets making the speaker useless for them.

around 500 dollars/euro's. maybe less depending on extra features such as backwards compatibility and VR.

HZD as the biggest launch game with death stranding and TLOU as cross gen games,maybe ghosts of tushima aswell. GOW 2 to release a year or 2 in it's lifecycle. uncharted 5 by that new san diego studio a year or 2 in it's lifecycle and bloodborne 2 as a possible launch title aswell.

I'm not really excited for PS5 but I am sure I will be by the time it rolls round and I'll inevitably get it day 1. I do enjoy the smaller number of titles nearer a consoles launch, it's just more manageable and you can play things you might not normally bother with and find some gems. I reckon for the first year or two of PS4s life I played 90% (?) of the released software. I find myself ignoring the equivalent these days.

@KratosMD TLOU part 2 and even ghost of tsushima will be 99% ps4 games.
most likely will get a release for ps5 aswell though.

death stranding i think could be moved as a ps5 exclusive at this point.

@jdv95 Nah, Kojima recently said that it's still on track to come out before the 2020 Olympics, and it's still scheduled to come out in the same year as the upcoming Akira film, which is next year. I'm thinking 2019/early 2020, but definitely on PS4.

Regardless of when the PS5 comes, the PS4 has to be more than half through its life - certainly as the top console and therefore it must me in the latter stage of its life and nearly at the point of retirement from being in the spotlight as the new PS5 takes over. Of course that doesn't mean its 'dead' as Sony do tend to support the old console for years after the new console has come out so retiring from the spotlight doesn't mean its dead.

I wouldn't be surprised though if the PS5 can do 4k/120 - not necessarily with the majority of AAA games but certainly capable of offering up 4k/120fps with select games. You may need a new TV to do that as HDMI 2.0 only offers 4k/60. I also expect it to offer Variable Refresh Rates too - if your TV supports that as well. Its possible too that the PS5 'could' offer 8k although I doubt many, if any AAA game will be in 8k. It could be possible with some games at 30fps but whether these games will offer gamers the choice to pick 8k/30 or 4k/60-120. 8k does require a lot of computational power but the PS4 Pro offered 4k/60fps with some games so if a PS5 couldn't offer those in 8k/30 something is wrong. Not offering them as a 'choice' and opting to only offer 4k but 120fps for example is a different matter but the PS5 'could' do 8k from a hardware perspective and that includes the HDMI 2.1 port. 4k TV owners can benefit from super sampling - may be an option for all those 4k TV owners that can't do more than 60fps too - super-sampled 6k-8k/60fps where as those with HDMI.2.1 TV owners could have 4k 120fps. 8K TV's will be available and the resolution isn't an issue, the complexity of the visuals and rendering them quickly enough for the frame rate is though. I am not saying a game like Last of Us 2 will be 8k because that is too complex - although 8k/30 could be an option - especially with CB rendering techniques, it could even be 60fps with the extra RAM and better CPU. I say 'could' but it does depend on whether the Devs actually build the game that way and offer us the option to select it. 8k TV's are here now and with Japan starting their 8k broadcasts in Dec, the likelihood of Sony bringing 8k TV's out too is not unrealistic and the PS5 offering 8k too as an 'option' isn't unfeasible for 'some' games. I do think 4k/60 is more likely to be the 'norm' in most cases but with more PC type options in games to tweak the settings to your preference. 1080/120 could be an option too for those who are still on HD TV's or even 144fps if you use a monitor. Point is, I wouldn't be surprised if the PS5 offers more options - inc HFR, VRR, 8k (not necessarily native) etc. The hardware (as in displays) will be out that offer 8k and a lot of us may not have TV's capable of doing more than 4k/60 so we may have options to improve the visuals for a 4k/60 experience or tweak the visuals for a 4k upto 120fps experience with VRR support or maybe 8k/30 or more depending on the visual settings we select - like a PC owner can.

That time already? Boy these years have whizzed by. Anyways, the PS5 doesn't need gimmicks, it just needs to be powerful and play great games and hopefully not sound like it's about to take off.

@andreoni79 It's the same for me, although across all the systems I own. I figure if gaming ever goes down the toilet I have enough to keep me busy for a long time!

@kyleforrester87 I long for those 2013/2014 days. I even played most of the Plus games back then. :')

@Kidfried yeah I'd probably skip over games like Fez, Transistor and Valient Hearts if they came out now. Sad really!

All I want is for the PS5 to be like the PS4 but better, and for it to be backwards compatible with at least PS4 games.

I hope for a lot better operating software, I have so many issues with the current one.

HZD 2 as a launch exclusive. Knack 3 as well.

PS4 and PS3 compatibility is impossible I'm afraid. I don't expect any device to be truly compatible with the PS3 ever again. PowerPC isn't coming back anytime soon.

I hope and pray for BC simply because of VR.
You can’t leave Astro Bot and co. stuck on PS4 with Gen1 PSVR.

@Fight_Teza_Fight I personally see no reason why they would ditch the x86 architecture. And if they have learned from the PS3, they know to avoid the highly customised processors like Cell. Same architecture as the PS4 seems like a safe bet. Unless they lock it off on purpose to sell remastered PS4 games...

@Octane Yeah I’m pretty much there with you, but who knows if Sony do try and ‘switch’ it up. Maybe they do go the hybrid route... .
Would you give up backwards compatibility for portability for example? It would be one way to regain some market share in their own territory & might be a more desirable feature.

I also have to think back to that report that came out earlier in the year about how little gamers spend playing BC games over on XBox. I believe the figures were like 3-5%?
It’s something that’s talked about a lot by more engaged gamers, but for the most part people buy new consoles to play new games.

I do think PS5 will be BC with PS4- maybe digital games only, but I’m not certain.
I don’t think anyone from Sony has ever properly addressed the issue (aside from Jim Ryan at that GT event).

@Fight_Teza_Fight Oh yeah, I definitely think that BC isn't as big of a deal as some make it seem it is. Most people don't care about it.

I'm not sure portability would be a good idea for Sony. They're investing in PSVR a lot, are they willing to give that up as well for portability? I get that PS4 games look good, and the PS5 can make them look better, but we've reached a point of diminishing returns. I still think there's a lot of room for VR to grow however, and it needs the extra processing power more than anything else.

They could always release a Wii U like GamePad that allows you to play wirelessly around the house, like you can do with the Vita and the PS4. It won't let you take it on the go, but it's something.

Whatever Sony does, it needs to go all-in. My preference would be for them to fully embrace the hybrid model, but that doesn't really work with their current ethos or the playerbase they've cultivated. A system primarily focused on taking VR to the next level, but still keeping it relatively affordable would be fascinating.

What they'll end up doing is the least interesting option for me, however, even if it does make the most commercial sense: they're release a system focused squarely on "True 4K gaming experiences." PSVR will still be a thing, but kept as a sort of successful side-project like it is now.
