I'm playing Tomb Raider (2013) and I like the feature where you can use the touch pad to zoom in and out on the map. It's surprisingly useful. Too bad other devs didn't make use of it. And the gyro as well; I still don't understand why gyro aiming isn't a standard option in any game that has some sort of aiming.

Get rid of that big useless square button and the big glowing light of wasted battery and give us USB-C and a Nintendo style D-pad rather than a the traditional PS-style buttons and we are golden. I think Sony makes real solid and reliable controllers in general otherwise.

@Heavyarms55 Sony's currwnt d-pad is the best d-paf in my opinion. Nintendo d-pads haven't been that good since the SNES days.

Also, just out of curiosity, which one are you talking about? The Pro or the Joycon?

Also, I take it you mean you want to remove the touchpad and you're not wishing for the removal of the button which this site lends his name too, right? Would've made for a great joke, though.

@Kidfried The touchpad yes, and the D-pad I am talking about is one like SNES style. I like the Pro controller's d-pad (after they fixed the bug with the early releases) but it's smooth, so it's not as nice as the SNES, Game Boy style which I prefer. And honestly I don't mind the touch pad much, I just think it is kinda ugly and pointless but also harmless. That light on the other hand should only ever be on when it's being used for something. Otherwise it's a gross waste of battery.

And USB-micro is just obsolete. But forgivable from when the PS4 controller first launched.

Yeah, having the option to turn off the light (if possible) would be neat.

I think the touch pad needs to stay there in case you want to play older games on it. Or maybe it'll require a DS4 and they keep making them alongside the new DS5...

@Heavyarms55 My hate for the Switch's d-pad is known all across the Mushroom Kingdom.

Different strokes for different folks?

@WebHead I can think of a fair amount of games that use it, even if it's just using it as two buttons (left and right touch pad).

@Kidfried I have to imagine you're talking about the original on the first release of the controller. They fixed the lack of a pivot on all later releases.

@Heavyarms55 I don't think so. Was bought around after Smash' release (so I only use my old GameCube controller for Smash.)

@Trajan Agree. I love how natural those shoulder buttons feel.

So I am hoping for a simple DS 4.5 - I cant imagine a total retooling with backwards compatibility, maybe an improved battery and turning off the light when unnecessary.

No D-Pad holds a candle to the Saturn and its 'rolling' D-Pad.

But, this gen, in terms of both comfort and controller placement, PS4 has the best D-Pad. Nintendo has struggled to make a half-way decent D-Pad this gen, and even if the Pro Controller "fixed" the input issues, it's still designed like an Xbox pad, which isn't ideal for me.

@Ralizah was that the same d-pad as the 6 button megadrive controller?

Also made up to see you use the term pad - rather than controller. I use that term all the time at home.

@Frigate I feel the same holding an x360 pad now. Once you get used to it though its fine.

I put the snes mini on when my mate came round at the weekend. How anyone can use that for extending lengths of time is beyond me. It's way too small.

@themcnoisy That's what sheeeeee said!

Oh wait, that doesn't work! That's what she didn't say?

Anyway, like you say the ds4 controller just needs a couple of revisions here and there. It is pretty much perfect for me, just the right size with my small hands. I had my reservations coming from 360 land, as I looked at the stick positions of the ds4 and thought I would struggle. But took me no time at all to get used to to it.

Saturn D-pad is very similar to the Mega Drive one.

This gen, the DS4 is easily the king of first party controllers, by a long way. I've never been particularly keen on xbox controllers - and they've never had good d-pads.

For the DS5 - Sony should consider revisiting the Vita D-pad, it's the best they've ever produced for my money.

Needs a better d-pad, as not since the smaller Japanese style Saturn pads has any been that good, although as @KalofKRYPTON says, the Vita was pretty good too

As the for the DS4, its odd...i hated the DS3 as the pad was too rigidly square in my large hands and it meant the sticks were never right, sitting in the wrong places for me. When i'd play on a mates PS3, i always felt completely out of sync, although thats more likely muscle memory.

I was a 360 user and i really dug that controller, so when I went to a preview event for PS4, the controller had to swing it for me and straight off the bat, it felt great, so i would be happy to see minor revisions than a redesign.

Maybe make the touchpad a little smaller or thinner horizontally and give room for an extra button maybe, but other than that, more of the same is fine by me...

@JohnnyShoulder Same, it's the most comfortable pad I have ever used - and I have medium to big hands.

Despite the piddly battery life, select and options buttons not protruding enough, and the waste of space that is the touchpad, there's a reason I opt for the DS4 over other controllers on PC.

It's a good controller with a great gyroscope and comfy triggers.

And, on PC, I can turn that damn useless lightbar off.

@themcnoisy It's similar. Although the Saturn controller has a superior form factor all-around.

Sega used to make THE best D-Pads.

@JoeBlogs i have the same issue with XB controllers, extended use just ends up causing aches and pains, i think it's because of HOW i have to hold it
