@KratosMD "but I still find it comical how you didn't like the looks of Kiwami because it looked the same as 0 but that's how it's going to be with literally all of the other games as well"

No not really. I didnt fancy Kiwami based on the TRAILER as all the selling points highlighted were what I played in zero. With finishing zero in April or May the TRAILER didnt encourage me to buy Kiwami as it looked like a trailer for Yakuza zero.

Youve missed my original point. Its not about discounting the game because of a similar location. The trailer for Kiwami could have been a trailer for zero. Thats why i originally posted and as you havent played zero then watched the trailer you wouldnt understand. Its not comical at all.

I just picked this up for $30. Steelbook too. This will be my first Yakuza game.

Gonna be a bit before I play it though. Trying to clear out my backlog.

@KratosMD pocket circuit racing is a great mini game.

Zero took me close to 100 hours and I hadnt finished the likes of shogi and a bunch of gambling games (too much rng). But yes it was big. There were 2 storylines and both mojima and kiryu had a massive one off side quest. Mojimas was building the best hosting bar around town and each instance was a strategy game within the bar, you selected which girl would host which bloke and you built up rep by paying off business dotted aroubd the locations and took on bosses in a straight up realtime strategy game.

Kiryus was building up an empire of shops from casinos to massage parlours. Along the way you took on bosses from each area whom then after a beating, joined your team as security, management etc. That was really deep and fun.

The kiryu management game took me 20 plus hours alone.

The side quests were truly special in zero. Tbh im gonna pickup yakuza kiwami now, zero is my goty hands down from characters, mini games, the fighting, side stories, skill trees, etc etc. Its a perfect game imo. Regardless if its more of the same I would happily replay its world even if its identical.

No you can't free roam post game. I only had the one save, which is only allowing me to do a NG+ using my game clear data.

How did you find the sub-stories in Kiwami? I just focused on story, as I was fresh of zero and a little burned out.
Speaking of Zero, you're going to love it. I spend 60 hours with it and only got like 32% completion. I imagine some of the characters are going to throw you off going from Kiwami to Zero, just as I did for me as I went Zero to Kiwami .

@KratosMD Don't know if you've finished the game yet, but I'm almost certain there is a point of no return & it's made pretty clear.

I literally had to rush through it, because of Uncharted TLL. Hard to keep up with all the games! I kind of just took Kiwami as a Zero story expansion, but it's good to hear that the sub-stories are worth checking out. I may go back to it for NG+ closer to when Kiwami 2 releases. Still need to fully unlock the Dragon of Dojjima style!

@KratosMD Yeah I can see that being annoying. I purposely tried to avoid his gaze at times. Cop Majima would only fight you if you had a weapon on you. The cutscene would always trigger regardless if you were packing or not- which I was not due to weapon durability.

The legendary styles are much easier to unlock in Zero. They are really time consuming, but at least they are really fun to do.
The games are really good value for money.

Hope Im not necro posting as Im 9 hours into Kiwami right now.

Its not as good as Zero in the side story stakes, where as zero had some laugh out loud moments Im yet to find that in Kiwami. The fighting is still great, just a little too often in my book.

The mini games are pretty much the same, underground women fighting is now the sega arcade king card game. Revisiting pocket circuit is still a blast! Darts, pool, karaoke etc. So yeah brilliant fun.

I havent been able to jump onto outrun or super hang on this time which is disappointing and the lack of the big side missions, hostess club and property management and being replaced by majima anywhere is a miss.

Im enjoying getting to know kamurocho again. I can practically find my way around without looking on the map and its a brilliant play area with loads to do. Compared to zero its a bit behind the pace, without the variety of a second playable character, missing arcade games, the lack of big side missions and the lack of personality in the side stories its a great game but not amazing.

@KratosMD you run the hostess clubs as majima in zero and its a 10-15 hour long side game if you finish it. I found the 80s vibe and music awesome in zero boooo Kratos lol.

@KratosMD Yeah, I am glad I put a long break between playing them. Sega are really stupid releasing Kiwami so soon after Zero - they are far too similar! I would have put Kiwami down, like you have with Zero. Doing the same things again so soon after would be mind numbing. I have forgotten about bits of Zero so am quite enjoying my play through of Kiwami and it will likely be my next completed game.

Once you get further in you will find the big side missions. I got lost in them for ages, especially the building management. Its pretty awesome. You will see the difference in the quality of the side stories too if you run enough of them, the steven speilberg / michael jackson stuff is on another scale.

Th3solution

@themcnoisy That’s good to know. I bought Kiwami last week on sale; I thought copies might get scarce after Y6 releases, so now I have both Y0 and Kiwami in my backlog. I planned to play 0 first and then Kiwami, but I’ll be sure to take a hefty break from the series between them. But actually, it will be a little while anyway as I have many other games slotted to play first.

@Th3solution "But actually, it will be a little while anyway as I have many other games slotted to play first."

Ditch them and start playing zero as your next game.

Sorry if this had already been answered, but which gane is the best place to start for a noob?
I almost bought Zero, i think, was that the first one released over here? I was put off by the lack of vehicles though so i got Just cause 3 instead when it came on ps+

@themcnoisy I was planning to play Bloodborne while it’s topical now and the community for it s hot. I’m reading that it’s maybe not a terribly long game, although howlongtobeat.com says probably about 35-45 hours, which is pretty meaty. Then I was intending to finish off Persona 5 which I’m about half through which still leaves a decent chunk of 50ish hrs left. Yakuza was to be next. Except I also am traveling this week so intend to probably start Trails of Cold Steel on my Vita while I’m away, so there’s that 80 hour game too. 😌 I’m not good at math, but the sum would suggest I’m swamped. But the following scenario is very possible — I try Bloodborne for 3-4 hours and give up on it, which is what happened when I played Dark Souls. Then I concurrently play P5, Yakuza0, and ToCS — switching back and forth depending on my mood. It’s just I usually try not to have too many huge 80+ hr games going at the same time. Perhaps Kiwami may be better to start first since it’s quite a bit shorter game, about 30 hrs according to the site. I just really liked the idea of playing the two games in chronological order. Aarrghh... I don’t know. Maybe I’ll just binge watch Downton Abbey instead. 😉

@KratosMD Cheers, i will pick up Kiwami ar some point. Probably in 2025 the way things are going.
@Th3solution I wouldn't pay much attention when people say BB is a short game. That wad probably for review purposes and playing at your own speed.

@JohnnyShoulder picking Just Cause 3 over Yakuza Zero?

Noooooooooooooo.

I dont think it matters which Yakuza game you pick. They are so similar. The most important parts like story, characters, fighting, pocket circuit and lessons on Ballantines Scotch (Thats a true part of the game) are all present and correct. Zero has a more expansive story, less fetch quests, a few extra mini games and big side missions. Kiwamis big benefit is its more respective of your time.

In many ways after zero, kiwami is like a huge expansion pack. The area is the same although different context is given as to why you do stuff.

Played some more Kiwami tonight. That little girl is a trouble magnet. She knows boxers down at the irish pub, is a professional gambler and even gets shot and wants to go and play. Great game and Ive found some of the more elaborate side stories like the hungry kid falls ill and you need to find a doctor whos then accused of being racist, super sonic rightcross boxer whos been told to fix a fight and my ladies a showgirl where the stripper is a yakuza with a gun trying to shoot kiryu. Much better side missions and pretty funny too.

Ive found both Majimas and Nishikis personality transplants quite strange. Majima used to be the prince of the night, forming an alliance with Kiryu at the end of zero after their paths zig zag to the conclusion - now hes like a maniac with none of the aspects of his previous personality, although it was amazing facing off against the breaker fight style (the best in zero imo, the style you learn from the dance battle trio). Nishiki was your best mate and all around good guy not really suited to the yakuza in zero. Now hes a sulky grot bag. Its all a bit weird, I suppose that goes with the territory of releasing a prequel and shoe horning the end of zero to work with kiwamis retelling of the original but its still jarring.

Still an awesome experience and one everyone should give a go. Yakuza is great and its filled the mass effect sized void in my life with great memorable characters and unique gameplay elements.

Majima anywhere is fun, he was in the photo booth with Rina abd Kiryu! So funny. Last night when I was going going to Shine for Rina to chat up, who was wearing a mini skirt? Majima hahaha. Then you had to date him. Classic.

The downsides to that element; I wish the allocation for the fights was a bit less for the skill rewards beating majimas various styles, 10 times seems a lot like padding to me. Its fun initially but is now tedious as his health bar is 3 times what it started as and his zombie and standard style are dead easy to beat. So its a tad stale by this point.

Also how do you get the musuo king card in the tree at the public park? I dont want to use any guides for this playthrough but cant grab that or another one in a gap by the food place which has a day and evening menu. Its too far away.
