Hi this is the first time really using this site, excuse me if im in the wrong category of any sorts posting this forum. But basically this is the first and major problem i have dealt with PS4 and it is that for about the first year or two i had my ps4 my connection had been stellar amazing and for about a year coming on 2 now it is declining rapidly and its been the same router i have been connected to, now what do i mean by declining? Its that my connection is still as strong as it used to be but i have “network errors” every say 30-90 minutes and its extremely annoying espically when trying to play games where you use hour attempts to do quests or something along those lines and it disconnects me from any game and voice chat and all i have to do is test internet connection and its all fixed. I do know its not just my ps4 because my friend brought his over and his was having network errors as well. The ps4 is the only console in the house i am experiencing problems with, I’d just like to know what to do because im clueless at this point. Thanks
Important info (I assume)
Wireless Connection (Wifi Router)
NAT type 2 (Always has been)
Connection speed download: 54.4 Mbps
Connection speed upload: 2.4 Mbps
Thanks

@jc555 Sounds like a router problem.

Reset it or try and switch to a less crowded wifi channel.

Better still - go wired, it's much better.

@KALofKRYPTON Thanks ive resetted it many times, as well a wired connection is pretty difficult saying my router is the floor above my ps4, what about the kind of lan cables where two ports connect to eachother and one cable goes into the router and one into my ps4 would that work? thanks

@jc555 Drill! lol

Do you mean like powerline adapters? That does take the native wifi radios out of the equation. But it may depend on your house.
There's no guarantee (if you're in an old house) that they will work, as the electrics on the separate floors may be on a different ring main.

Not a power cycle, I mean a system reset.

Log in to your router from your computer or phone and see if there are any diagnostic tools.

Also, try a wifi analyser app for your phone, actually - do this first. It could be that the wifi channel that your router is defaulting to is just really busy. It's easy to switch channels via the administration menu on your router.

@KALofKRYPTON Yes i was referring to powerline adaptors, but i just got a wifi analyzer app and this may be a dumb question but how do i tell what wifi channel it is mainly connecting to, as well as how do i tell if that is a busy channel thanks.

@jc555
Find the channel graph. Most commercial/residential routers will be in the range of 1-11 for 2.4GHz signals.

You should be able to see your ssid and those of any other routers in range.

Like this:

I live in a flat, so everyone with WiFi is in close proximity and as you can see - there's a lot of overlap.
The highest peaks you can see there are the 2.4GHz radio of my router and my PS4 (for remote play).

I tend not to use 2.4 anymore since everything I have uses 5. So it's a little further up the spectrum and as you can see below, there's just my 5GHz router signal.

If you can see that there's a lot of traffic on your ssid band, log in to the router's ad min menu and you should be able to change it to a less crowded band.

Then you just have to test it.

@KALofKRYPTON I have read it all and i understand it completely there is just one problem, i have an apple phone not android and cant seem to find an app or website that can provide this graph. Any suggestions?

jc555

KALofKRYPTON

@jc555 thanks.

Ah... Yeah. I doubt you'll find anything on the app store that's useful. Apple lock that sort of stuff out.

Laptop? There are very likely windows apps to do the same thing.

If you can't find one, see if you can borrow an android/windows device for a few minutes to check.
Failing that, just jump to to the router admin and change the channel anyway and see if it helps.

@KALofKRYPTON This is some good advice, thanks.

I will try this with my setup as my download speeds on my ps4 can be quite slow sometimes.

@JohnnyShoulder I find that download speed is mostly dictated server-side. But it could help.

Do a database rebuild on your PS4 too. That would definitely help.

@KALofKRYPTON I’m kind of ignorant on these things too. I tend to think all these devices just work by some form of magic.
But, yeah, tonight I was downloading some games and everything just seemed really sluggish, slow to load the screens, then slow to download. The PS4 (an original launch) was zipping along fine switching menus, but anything dealing with connecting to the internet was super slow, including pulling up and browsing through the store. At one point the upper right showed “offline” briefly.
So I pulled up settings and checked my online connection and it was fine - 90% signal and connected to my WiFi router. I used the PS4 to check my download speed and it showed 15 MBPs, which seemed odd, so I checked on my phone and Speedtest showed dL speeds of 66 MBPs. Weird. I’m just going to go to bed and leave the PS4 to finish downloading but I’ll try resetting the router in the morning and maybe rebuild my database tomorrow, but I just did it about 2-3 months ago and haven’t deleted or added much. Then I might try the changing channels thing but I’m a little bit stepping out onto thin ice with that. If I mess with the channels in the admin menu does it negate all my crap that’s connected on this WiFi router? Like my phone, TV, Vita, laptop, and who knows what else. I’d hate to have to reconnect all this junk.

KALofKRYPTON

@Th3solution As I say. Generally, slow downloads, especially from something like PSN will be a server-side issue. You may have 66mbs, but that doesn't mean PSN is delivering content at that speed.

Changing channels shouldn't change anything for connected devices. They all connect within the same frequency range.

@Th3solution What i do if I'm downloading something to my ps4 is put it in rest mode but before close all running apps (press and hold the ps button, the option should be at the top of the of the quick menu). Your PS4 download speed should creep up.
If that doesn't work try turning your router as PS4 off, wait a couple of mins and restart em. Either of these methods works for me 99 percent of the time. I have similar problems to you, my ps4 download is sometimes slow but my other devices are fine.
I may have some of the terminology wrong here, so bear with me but this is how i understand it. Apparently the PS4 has a small packet size to receive downloads, by having say a game and YouTube open this packet gets smaller. The PS4 will prioritise the game and YouTube, so this is why downloading stuff takes ages and your PS4 download speed takes a hit.

@JohnnyShoulder @KALofKRYPTON
When I got up this morning after leaving it in rest mode overnight, all 3 of my downloads had installed within an hour of my turning the PS4 onto rest mode, so yes, it appears that they downloaded faster and perfectly fine.
Thanks for the input.

@KALofKRYPTON I could only find one free program online and it wasnt working well, so im going to switch channels guessingly to see if anything changes, to either 1,6,11 (Because no overlap obviously) from whatever its default is, just for a heads up prior to doing so this wont affect my wifi bill or payments in any way will it? As well i just had a q in general which is when i switch my wifi channel im just confused on how this works because would this just switch all the devices connected to my router to a new channel making it just as busy? Or am i just overthinking/underthinking this. Thanks.

KALofKRYPTON

@jc555 it has no effect on the traffic between your router and your ISP, so there's no impact on your bill.

Your devices are searching for your ssid within the available commercial frequency range, so they'll just connect with the same credentials on whatever channel.

Think of it as something like FM Radio when you have a dozen stations broadcasting on very close frequencies. It can be difficult to tune to the one you want.
Move that broadcast to an open field and it's easier to find and stay tuned in to.

WiFi is just radio.

After weeks of testing different wifi channels, my original was channel 1 and it didnt work, the next one i tried was 6, it was just as bad, then i tried 11 which was really good and i had no blackouts for a few days then it went back to normal. Im lost at this point. @KALofKRYPTON
