... I've only ever played a demo for Ico @RogerRoger back in the day so I have nothing to say really regarding the Ueda/Team Ico games... So there's no pressure from me at least for enjoying it or not!

I look forward to reading the rest of your thoughts as you go along!

Wow, huge thanks to @Thrillho @kyleforrester87 @Gremio108 @Kidfried and @Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy there for all the encouragement, performance tips and interest (and a belated chuckle at the simultaneous editing done by @Th3solution last night, too)!

Played a couple more hours of it this morning and, perhaps inevitably, uttered my first "Oh, for goodness sake, Trico, would you just...?!" after being introduced to the commands system. It's okay, though; him being an occasional doofus makes me love him even more. There was also a weird moment with a room full of statues which felt like a glitch, but I overcame it all the same. I'm keeping a half-decent pace (or at least, it feels like I am) and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with him thusfar.

@icecube Really pleased to see you enjoying Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition so much! If you're enjoying the first game that much, you're in for a real treat with the rest of the trilogy.

After finishing ng+ on Tlou2 I needed something else to go alongside bloodstained game club. So thought I'd try Shadow of the tomb Raider. I know it gets slated for the story, but I thought the story in Rise was toss so how much worse can it be.

Then the opening cozumel section happens, you're squeezing through a small tunnel, then taking on a huge overhang with your ice axes. Finally you get to the tomb room... Then your mate Jonah just waltzes in to join you. Where did he come from?! And why didn't Lara go that way?!

Lol, at least it should be good for a laugh.

After @Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy recently posted about her run through Oddworld, I've decided to fire up New 'n' Tasty again (five and a half years has to be my record gap between trophies for a game).

I'm enjoying it so far and just got through the Stockyards. It's weird though that for a game I must have last played on PSone 20 years ago (...good lord) I still keep pressing the buttons corresponding to the original scheme you can't use.

The game is so much more generous with grabbing ledges and going through doors though; the original was brutal that if you didn't hit it perfectly then you were done. I'm also playing on normal difficulty and it's weird for it not to be an insta-kill for pretty much anything. Instead, you can take a few hits and regain health when you rescue a mudokon.

There are also SO many hidden areas compared to the original that it gets almost annoying.

Onto Winter now in TLOU, playing as Ellie running around with Nolan Nonce. He delivers his lines like a mischievous goblin, all “hee hee hoo hoo get me that ladder or I’ll eat you”.

Plumbing’s just Lego innit. Water Lego.

Trans rights are human rights.

HallowMoonshadow

There's a health system in new and tasty @Thrillho?! Good lord that would've helped out so much during Abe's Oddysee.

I'd also take a ridiculous amount of hidden areas over the no quicksaving!

I got to the Scarabonia temple myself in the original before having to put it down for a bit out of frustration (and refusing to look at a walkthrough for the one bit I got stuck on). I'll be going back to it soon enough though to finish it off

I am playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey. If you can get past the garbageland combat and the fact that there is way too much stuff to do in a game that can't really support it, it's pretty great.

@johncalmc It’s no surprise that the AC Valhalla preview footage focused on the ‘new and more varied combat’ as well as it looks like the side quest type activities are more akin to fewer but longer and more meaningful content. I haven’t played Odyssey yet, but Origins was weighed down with probably too much bloat as well. Yet I still really liked the game.
Reckon you’ll put in the hours to get the Odyssey platinum? Wait, what am I asking... of course you will. 😄

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

johncalmc

@Th3solution I'm nearly there :') the time-sink for the platinum on Odyssey is WILDLY overstated. I heard talk of it taking like 100-150 hours and stuff. I don't know how long I've been playing it but it can't be any more than like... 50 hours? And I don't have much to do for the platinum.

If you liked Origins you'll like Odyssey. They're basically the same except a) Odyssey is funnier, and b) Odyssey has even more pointless stuff crammed into it to pad it out.

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Yeah, the health system certainly helps if you take a stray bullet as you leap off a ledge for instance. Quick saving is an utter godsend though, especially with so many of these tougher hidden areas! To give it some context, I’ve rescued about 100 mudokons already!

Some of the hidden areas are ones from the original but some are new. Lots in Rupture Farm are either through hidden hatches are jumping down trapdoors that would have killed you in the original.

It’s good fun though with a massive nostalgia hit for me as well.

Thrillho

HallowMoonshadow

You've only just left Rupture farms and you've got a 100 mudokons already @Thrillho?! Wow that's kinda ridiculous... I can see why you said it was a touch annoying!

Sounds rather good though. I'll be sure to pick that up at some point

I've played through chapter 1 of Trails Of Cold Steel over the weekend clocking in just over 11 hours of playtime (Turbo mode is quite useful for just running around among other things lol).

I'm happy to report that I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Cheers for the tip about secret/hidden quests @KratosMD. I probably missed one or two the first free day but I've found all the others so far I think

The english dub/localisation is rather good and feels fairly natural for all the characters.

There's only one character whom I'm not particularly interested in at the moment of the main cast (It's Laura) and that partially might be due to not being terribly fond of her voice actress... though her character isn't that compelling at the moment either

I really quite like everyone else though & There's actually a LOT of recognisable voices here to me. (In the dub at least)

  • Rean is voiced by the guy whom did Kiyotaka Ishimaru in Danganronpa (And I think he fits quite well as Rean)
  • Gaius is voiced by the guy whom did Yasuhiro Hagakure from Danganronpa
  • Cam Clarke (Liquid Snake) I believe does the blonde haired military teacher and a few other voices
  • Fie is voiced by Morgana's (From P5) voice actress
  • Matt Mercer (Yusuke from P5) does the voice of George and some extras & I've heard Taliesin Jaffe too in a similar capacity as the history instructor and extras.

There's probably a bunch I haven't recognised as well at the moment or voicing characters I haven't seen/met yet.

I'm also really loving the music so far. I really quite like the standard battle music. I've also been humming the opening theme a number of times (And I watch it every time I've booted it up) but most of it in general is rather catchy and memorable for me at least!

Battles have been fairly challenging too. I had two party members ko against one of the bosses and the last boss I just fought really kept me on my toes too!

Seeing as I seemingly recall you saying Trails in the Sky was a bit longwinded @Ralizah I'll give you a little breakdown of how Cold Steel has been laid out so far for me

It started off with an In medias res of sorts with Class VII already formed and in action with them taking part in some kind of military excursion and after a few battles it did a jump back 5 months earlier with Rean's first day attending Thors military Academy (Unlike Persona 5 either there's no framing device or anything so far, it just cut back to five months ago and that's it for now)

You get introduced to Rean of course and a bunch of characters and a bit of plot about attending the school and stuff before you get a "free day"

A free day consists of some school based quests/side quests around town and on campus and is your time to socialise with the other students.

You get two link points to spend during the day and one in the evening (The skip to evening is done after visiting the dungeon/completing the mandatory quests you've been given)

After the free day is over there's then a small practical exam where you have to battle with a monster with certain conditions at stake (The first is just to not have any ko during the fight)

There's then what's called a field study where the students of class VII are split up and go somewhere in Erebonia.

This revolved around more quests and side quests being done to assist the locals of that town with a small plotline going on that no doubt feeds into the bigger one down the line that the game started out on.

You gain academy points for all the main, side quests & hidden quests, giving correct answers to questions in class, practical exam conditions met etc that you've done throughout the month that's totaled up to give you various rewards like items, new quartz (Which is sorta like Materia except you can't level them up(Besides Master Quartz at least)) and stuff like that

I've started up chapter 2 and so far it's playing out in a similar fashion with that loop of a free day, practical exam and then a field study but there's apparently mid terms coming up that may cause a slight change to the routine and I'm obviously being fairly vague any plot points of course to not spoil anything.

I can't think of anything else to mention Ralizah at the moment but If you got any questions I'll be sure to answer them!

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Thanks for the elaborate breakdown. I'm thinking that, regardless of how quickly the plot moves in this, the calendar system probably helps it feel like you're consistently achieving things in-game, rather like Persona 5 or the recent Fire Emblem.

It definitely sounds like you're enjoying the game thus far!

Heh we'll see... Maybe she'll become more interesting down the line @KratosMD.

And cheers for the note about the scope of the first game... I figured it was sorta setting itself up for a more bombastic sequel but good to know none the less

You're welcome @Ralizah

The military academy setting has lent itself to the world building fairly naturally I thought and the fact that all the quests are tied to the academy with the end of the chapter framing everything I'd done like a report card is a neat little touch.

I got an A for chapter 1

And yeah whilst it's not like Persona where you play every single day, the passage of time is fairly notable none the less... Hopefully it should feel like you're making progress should you get round to it.

Thrillho

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Yeah, and they’ve all been from Rupture Farm. I’ve done 4/6 rooms in the paramite temple and not rescued one since leaving.

The game feels like such a breeze now though. Not having each screen load separately means you can see danger coming more easily (especially on Elum) and the health mechanic stops annoying deaths from bats in particular.

Kidfried

Medievil. This game started out being truly fun to play, but now I progressed a bit it starts to feel more and more unfair. Dark Souls is more forgiving, to be honest.

Thrillho

@Kidfried Whereabouts are you in the game? There were only a couple of places I found it really tough, the main one being the ants nest (which you can go back to later with much better weapons).

Thrillho

Kidfried

@Thrillho I was trying the ants nest, played 15 minutes, got to the boss and then indeed discovered that I actually need a weapon still to stand a good chance against her. So I went on to play the other level.

Also I was playing the corn field yesterday, where I completed everything (got 100% souls), and only had to return the 'part' for the mower or something, but then I jumped in the grinder trap with full health, died instantaneously, and had to replay 20 minutes.

Outdated game design all the way through, if you ask me.

Kidfried

Thrillho

@Kidfried I somehow managed to do the ant nest after a LONG time when you first encounter it but it’s much easier to go back with the ranged weapons you acquire later on.

It is a fun game but the flaws are certainly those from the original, particularly the horrible camera! I still enjoyed it though and it’s a very do-able platinum if that’s your thing.
