Topic: Thinking about getting a Playstation 4, my first console that isn't Nintendo.

So soon I'll be getting tons of money ($400ish). I already have a decent laptop, can run most games but sometimes I have to turn down the graphics, and my friend who I play tons of games with can't run many games at all. I also own a Wii U and my most recent Nintendo Switch. I want to spend all my money on gaming stuff no questions asked. I was planning on buying a PS2 because I like getting old games and consoles and most likely still will get one because it's so cheap. Since I recently found out about all the money I will get soon and Crash Bandicoot remakes and some other interesting titles like PaRappa the Rapper made me think that it would be nice to get one. I have no interest in Uncharted 4 and Call of Duty so if I get one i'll get the one with no game and 1 TB of storage for $299. I know it is late to get a Playstation considering it's years old but I think it'll last awhile. I could get that with a few games or just get retro consoles like a N64, NES, SNES PS2, Gamecube, and still have money left for games. I'll be getting the money early September and just thought to ask what I should do and games recommended if so.

What kinda games do you like? If you are an RPG fan Horizon: Zero Dawn and The Witcher 3 are must have games.

Also keep in mind that alot of retro consoles like NES, and SNES could end up costing you alot more then a current gen console. Games due to collectors can get pricey and if you find a popular game at a cheap price it could be a counterfeit. Retro gaming is fun but you need to be careful more so then current gen. Also keep in mind retro consoles may need to serviced due to their age and if you are unable to do it yourself you will have a hard time finding someone who can.

@Tasuki Thanks this is my first time on this site so sorry about the games thing. And I already have many retro consoles and I have seen a N64 for $40, Wii (that also plays gamecube) for $30, NES for $50 and others that are around that price. I understand some games can be expensive but most of the time retro games are really cheap unless it's a popular one then it usually costs the price of a new current gen game.

@KratosMD Yeah I was thinking that but I have my fair share of platformers on the Wii U and 3ds. I'm more into Adventure Open World games so I think a PS4 is best for that. Also a PS3 isn't much cheaper than a PS4 for some reason, especially the games.

@Splat I'm not a big fan of RPGs, I want Action/Adventure games and I've seen a lot of those on PS4 just looking though the games.

@BezBot I'd recommend getting the Uncharted 4 bundle anyway. Otherwise that would be like getting a Nintendo console without Mario! And since it's literally $20 cheaper on Amazon than the regular PS4, so you're saving money and you're getting a free game!

Anyway, Europe has a Crash Bandicoot + Ratchet & Clank bundle, but I'm not sure if those exist in the US as well.

The thing about retro consoles is you often end up spending more money than you initially think. That N64 for $40 for example? You're going to need a replacement control stick, something you probably have to do yourself, or get a refurbished one. And the games aren't cheap either. You'll be paying full price for a lot of games, if not more. You're better off getting the games you want on VC on the Wii U (or Switch eventually).

And lastly, don't worry, Horizon is more of an action/adventure game than an RPG (The Witcher 3 too). WRPGs tend to be very light on the RPG elements and are at times more comparable to something like Zelda than something like Final Fantasy.

@BezBot Also to add to the retro gaming bit prices tend to fluctuate more so then current games, and it can fluctuate by alot. That N64 game that was going for $10 last week well now could be going for $50 this week all because some Youtuber decided to make a video about it or even mention it. For example the NES game Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde a few months ago was going for $5 or less, but because of the Angry Video Game Nerd the price has gone up by about 6 times. Is it a good game, not really is it a hidden gem? Nope. It's just because of AVGN the demand of the game went up and unlike say a PS4 game, they don't make anymore copies of a retro game. So keep that in mind as well just cause a game is not popular or high in demand now, doesn't mean it won't be tomorrow.

@BezBot Action/Adventure games. My go-to answer would be Uncharted or Tomb Raider, but you don't like Uncharted or RPGs...

Being on Nintendo, you've probably never played Assassin's Creed 2. I would highly suggest picking up The Ezio Collection. I feel like everyone should play the masterpiece that is AC2.
How about Kingdom Hearts? I feel like that's a series that could've done very well as a 'Nintendo game', but the main entries have always been exclusive to PlayStation.
Other games I think you may enjoy are God of War, Infamous SS and Gravity Rush.

As for retro gaming I'd go digital on PS4- much cheaper & better. There's the whole PS2PS4 initiative with more and more classics added to the list with enhanced visuals and trophy support-this month it's Patapon. Next year you also have the Shadow of The Colossus remake/remaster. I also think PSOne classic support has to be on the horizon...

As for buying a PS4 I'd suggests waiting for the Black Friday deals at this point. I expect the PS4 to be on fire-sale as it goes up against the Switch and Xbox One X.

I know this may be a bit controversial on a PS site, but have you considered a Xbox One? The reason I say that is because you could have Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 games too. Also for a 'relatively' small monthly fee, you could get the Game Pass which will give you access to a wide variety of games - kind of like Netflix where you can download any game you want from the available titles and if you want to keep it permanently, you can buy with a 20% discount. Its not just XB1 games but XB360 games too. You can pick up an XB1s, with an excellent 4k Bluray Player for less than a PS4.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Give Bloodborne a try. Technically it's an RPG I suppose, but it plays more like an action game — and in my opinion it's the best one on the platform.

As for platformers, I think Tearaway is unmissable. I still firmly believe if that game had "Nintendo" on the box it would get much more praise.

@BAMozzy Looking through XBOX One games all are on Wii U, PC, and PS4. Also I don't need a 4k Blu Ray considering I only own a 1080p TV I got for $100. I also don't really see much interest in the XBOX 360 games really at all. I don't think XBOX is good for me since I own a PC and it doesn't have many exclusives like Playstation does. What might get me is the Xbox One X as long as it can play XBOX 360 games, because that library would be huge. For now though I think I'll buy a PS4 Slim.

@Fight_Teza_Fight All those games interest me, even Uncharted I might try if it goes on sale or something, but no way a full $60 for it. I'll still get a PS2 I think because it can play PSone games and PS2 games and I like having the physical games.

@get2sammyb Tearaway Unfolded does look interesting and I'll most likely buy that considering the low price tag. Bloodborne I don't know about but maybe later on I will.

@Tasuki Yeah I understand how everything works, I already have bought a GBA and GBA SP and DSi from places like it and tons and tons of games, so I think I'm alright with that. Anyway I think I have finally decided to buy a PS4 Slim! I should get it around the end of August, so now I wait.

@Octane Getting a Nintendo Console with no Mario? Sounds to me like a Nintendo console I bought a few months ago.. but yeah I think I'd be all right but I'm just buying a PS4 I think. I might get the bundle but I'll see what the prices are when I have the money so I can decide which is more worth the purchase.

@BezBot Well, I'm just saying... Sometimes bundles are cheaper than the actual console itself, so it's always worth keeping in mind. Anyway, keep us updated!

@BezBot It was just a suggestion and based on the fact you had some interest in more retro titles. The fact it also doubles up as a 4k HDR Bluray may well be more of a benefit in the future. Of course the Xbox One and PS4 share a lot of similarities in the Library of games available. I would say that the PS4 has more 'numerous' quality Exclusives but the Xbox also adds the Backwards Compatibility and whilst a lot in the future may well be on Win10 PC's (if you sign up and get an 'Xbox' Profile so can buy from the MS store - also if you buy digitally will give you both PC and Xbox versions). In that way, it could be a good compliment to the PC as it will give you both the PC and Xbox games without needing to buy twice - assuming that you may want to chill on the sofa playing the Xbox version instead of sat at a desk playing the game on PC. The save points as well as Achievements, party chat etc are all linked so you can play on the PC save your progress and then continue playing on the Xbox.

The Xbox One X will be a much more powerful Xbox One - similar in essence to the PS4 Pro - and will have exactly the same Backwards Compatibility as the Standard Xbox One. Game Pass also would be quite good for newcomers to this generation. It will offer a 100 or so games and every month maybe replace a few with new titles. You can download and play as many of these as you want - offline too if you want. If there is any game you download and play that you want to keep permanently, you get a big discount. Its not a bad option for newcomers and has a mix of old (360) games as well as new (XB1) games too.

It was just an idea. I own both a PS4 (Pro) and a XB1s too. The base PS4 is certainly a great HD console and has a good range of exclusives. You won't go far wrong with either console. I do think that MS may well have the edge in what it offers to newcomers, especially those that missed out on the XB360/PS3 games due to the Backwards Compatibility and Game Pass too. I could easily make a case for both consoles though and the PS4 is much more fixed in this era compared to the Xbox which still has a foot in the past so to speak. If you have a decent Win10 gaming PC, it may make more sense to buy a PS4 for the exclusives as MS certainly seem to be unifying all their Win10 devices into one. That also includes the Xbox so you could end up playing Forza 7 (for example) with PC and Console gamers and, if you own both, could play on either platform if you wanted.

There is of course, no rush. With November and Black Friday coming up you could well find a great deal on a console. The Pro is more expensive but it does add a bit more 'power' to help some games run better and some games, like Infamous for example, gives you the opportunity to play the game (up to) 60fps. You don't need a 4k TV specifically to get benefits from the enhanced console(s) (if you also include the XB1 X too). Whilst you may only have a 1080p TV right now, maybe in the future you may upgrade (may only have the option to buy 4k HDR at a retailer), these consoles could give a new lease of life to some games with enhance resolutions and High Dynamic Range - almost like buying a 'remastered' version of these...

@BAMozzy I know it was just a suggestion and stuff and wasn't trying to completely shoot you down on your idea, so sorry if it seemed like I did. I've spent a long time deciding what to get looking at both consoles and I feel like PS4 will provide me more with a console experience and exclusives because I have a decent PC and most of the best games on XBOX on are Steam or the Windows Store or PS4. As for the future with 4K I don't mind playing in 1080 because I know if my TV works I won't be buying a new one. I know there are better things about the XBOX but I think the PS4 has better things for me.
