@kyleforrester87 Woah! High praise for Fez! Guess I need to put that one on the short list.

@Th3solution @Kidfried @Octane Sorry to wade in here but for my money on a standard ps4 its one of the best games out there. If you are drawn to puzzle books or games you will love this. The first 30 odd puzzles took me about half an hour. I thought this is great. But dead easy. The issue at that point was I was just following a wire across the first set of puzzles to complete the first section. I wasnt observant enough to notice other stuff going on. Then boom it had grabbed me when I started to.

I was messaging @quintumply and @simon_fitzgerald a few pictures a day. Sometimes crying for help. I remember being in the 'film' room before not knowing what it was and completely fluked an answer.

As the laws get more difficult you learn with it. Getting better and better. If you are logical minded person you will love it.

The only downside is one trophy at the end of the game. Ive hit the damn last post so many times and they are by far my weakest puzzles in the game. And Mr Blow patched it to make it even harder! What a cu#+.

10/10 for me. An absolute gem and only Portal, Fez and recently Statik are on par with it.

As for Fez, put that on right now @kyleforrester87 is spot on. Fez is a masterpiece of game design.

@themcnoisy Just when I have finally made up my mind to pass on the game, you come in here a mess everything up 😆. But seriously, I appreciate your input.
And here I’ve had the masterpiece Fez sitting on my hard drive collecting dust this whole time ... I guess my first order of business will be to try it, since I have already. Maybe this will spur an interest in puzzle games for me and then l’ll follow up with a shot at The Witness. 🤔

@Th3solution this isn't a Fez thread so I won't derail but if you do play it, it does reveal itself somewhat slowly. Initial thoughts are a cutesy platformer with a cool shifting mechanic but for me at least it became a lot more. The world tells a story, and you need to keep your eyes open! Then have fun reading the weird theories on Reddit! Anyway if you do crack it open let me know what you think. I've talked myself into playing it again now, it's been 4 years

I never finished the challenge room. That will forever be my most disappointing missed platinum, gutted I never achieved it.

Logically I am pretty much all there. My memory and sense of direction on the other hand are both awful, I would mess up the maze every time unless it was in a basic L shape. Then to make things worse my memory also has issues with the pillar puzzles - if those babies were flat absolutely no problem - but they aren't. Why the hell are they the last part of that section WHhhhyyyyyy 😭

Seeing as this thread has been brought back up, can I just say how much I love this game. That's all, thanks.

I just remembered what I wanted to say. It's silly, but maybe I'm onto something.

So the final song (and pretty much the only one) of the game is Opus 46 In the Hall of the Mountain King. The final and longest video is titled "The secret of Psalm 46".

46, 46... Coincidence?

Kidfried

@Octane It's hard for me to tell if you're in on it and making a meta joke, or if you're just making a sincere observation.

Kidfried

@Quintumply @Kidfried Either I'm going slowly insane or maybe there's a meta joke hidden in there. No idea, I noticed it recently. But two isn't really a pattern, is it? Maybe there's more, but it's probably nothing!

46 + 46 = 92.

9 + 2 = 11

11/10 is the score Ste should have given the Witness. Case closed.

@Octane I don't know if we're approaching spoiler territory here or not. But just to be sure!

So, the lecture by Moriarty deals with easter eggs, secrets and also numerology. I don't think the lecture has only one point it wants to bring across. But one important thing I took away from it in the context of this game is that it's a reflection on how we as humans always try to recognize patterns and narratives in the world around us, even when those patterns might not be there in the first place.

One of the most eye opening parts of the game for me was a secret video you can find, filmed in first person. It's basically someone walking around his apartment who (after playing The Witness probably) sees The Witness style puzzles in the world around him.

So, the Moriarty talk is about Psalm 46 in the St. James Bible, which released when Shakespeare was 46. Coincidentally the 46th word of that Psalm, and the 46th word from the end are respectively "Shake" and "Speare". Was that put in on purpose or a coincidence? No one can say with absolute certainty!

Of course I have my own opinion on the matter. But the thing with The Witness is that it doesn't really matter in the end. The game is a reflection on how we "witness", and we attach meaning to the world around us. Whether it was or wasn't there in the first place.

You might have probably noticed how The Witness, or other video games have changed how you looked at the world around you. I sometimes see The Witness dtyle puzzle trails in the sky, or I might recognize Tetris blocks in the flats outside the window of my office.

We're great at recognizing patterns. That's how we were able to solve the puzzles in The Witness in the first place (no one told you how to make those, you found the patterns yourself). So it's a good thing, mostly. But sometimes we can obsess about it too, and we can be dead wrong about it.

In Moriarty's lecture he talks about numerology a lot. He talks about the number '666' for instance. Right now there are 665 puzzles discovered in The Witness, which is why many fans were convinced there is still one puzzle we haven't found yet. But, who knows, maybe there isn't a puzzle 666. Maybe there's no special meaning to the number of puzzles in the game. Here's a great read on that topic: http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/03/10/the-witnesss-biggest-secre...

So yea, this game is super meta. I find it hard to speak clearly about it without being reductive about the game. I think that's what makes The Witness great art by the way. I agree with that 11/10.

I can talk about this game all day, by the way. This game (just like Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, Metal Gear Solid V, What Remains of Edith Finch) is a great recent example of how effective, unique and brilliant video game story telling sometimes is and can be.

Kidfried

Octane

@Kidfried Yeah, I've definitely seen that video more than I would like to admit

I forgot about the references to 46, which makes the choice of Opus 46 even more of a nice coincidence, or is it

That's the question, isn't it? Is it a coincidence, or is it Jonathon Blow messing with your brain knowing you'll look for the patterns even though you're specifically told that it's probably nothing more than a simple coincidence.
