Topic: Super Meat Boy - OT / Rage Thread

I've been playing this since yesterday and loving it so far! Some of the levels are damn tricky (and I've hardly touched the Dark World stuff yet, as I plan on completing the Light Worlds first), but so far I've never hit any point where I've felt really frustrated. I think it really helps that the levels are all so short, so even when you die it's not really a big deal. The way I see it every death is just a learning experience. Sort of like Dark Souls / Bloodborne, if those games were a fast paced platformer where you played as a slab of meat...

Anyhow, thought I'd set up a place for people to discuss the game, and to give everyone somewhere to rage when needed, as I'm expecting some of the later levels to be brutal, and frankly if anyone is planning on the plat, I think they're likely to end up on a psych ward before finishing all of those no death trophies!

I'm just about to finish the Light World for the 4th chapter, Hell, so hopefully should be able to finish the Light World campaign and get started in earnest on those Dark Worlds later if you've started it yet, how far are you, and how are you finding it so far?

I will say that Super Meat Boy, whilst challenging, is a fantastically designed game. Few games have ever given me the sense of achievement that SMB has. I completed it 100% on Xbox360 and as good as it was, I'm not sure I have the time (or the sanity) to do it again.

There is one character unlock that is absolutely brutal though. You'll know it when you find it!

Only had a quick go, did chapter 1 and a couple of levels in chapter 2 - it's the kind of game that i'll slowly try and clear over the next...6 years.

It's great, was always jealous of the 360 lot getting this.

Edit: no way would I try and 100% it though. Just no lol.

@Churchy: that's a hell of an achievement! I'm going to try and 100% it myself, but no way am I trying for the platinum, can't imagine how anybody can actually get the trophies that need you to complete an entire chapter without dying!

The chapter 6 levels are a massive step up, just did the Dr Fetus fight up to the escape checkpoint, will finish it in the morning

Edit: finished the main 6 worlds, but oh my god Cotton Alley is insane...

I try to like it, but I really can't stand the way the game plays. The controls are way too floaty in my opinion and the level design is aiming at frustrating you more than that it's trying to really challenge you.

I understand the charm this game has for a lot of people, but I like Super Mario Maker wáy more than this. Too bad, I remember really liking the original newgrounds game when I was a bit younger.

PS Yea, I'm just raging because In stuck at a level.

@Kidfried: I'm inclined to disagree, for the most part I reckon the controls are pretty darn tight (with the exception of the sticking to the walls mechanic, but it's required and I'm not really sure how they could fix it). I just started Kung Fu Rabbit and after playing this it's practically unplayable, it's so damn slow and floaty it's ridiculous!

And personally I think most of the levels, in the light worlds at least, are designed really well - everything plays out the same each time, so there are rarely moments where dying is ultimately not your own fault, some of the levels just take a lot of tries to learn properly.

When it comes down to it, the key things are reflexes and muscle memory. After a few runs of the later levels you end up doing bits that you found difficult at first almost without thinking about it! Some of the level design is pure evil though - world 7 and the dark worlds are downright nasty.

BUT, I did create this thread half with the intent for it to be a rage outlet, so rage away! what level are you stuck on?

@SteveButler2210: I wouldn't describe myself as a great gamer, but platformers are what I grew up on. Also, I was determined to do it! I think I ended up dying about 50,000 times (if it's the same in this version, you can look up your death amount in the opening menu). Strangely, when I got to Cotton Alley, I took a break. When I came back to it, it somehow seemed to click easier.

@Swiket: Oh that's a bit of a shame. The original soundtrack was fantastic - I might download it just to see what's up!

As for the controls and the design. I think it's actually pretty ingenious. I love how each world has a theme of it's own and plays differently, and the muscle memory you develop is great. There's a great section of Indie Game: The Movie where Edmund McMillen talks about level design and teaching the player. Also, I love the fact that it's pure platforming. There's no power ups. Just pure challenge.

This is my favorite part. I'm kind of bored of platformers relying on gimmicky inclusions to distinguish them from other games.

EDIT: Haha, I just figured out I forgot about the "Run" button. Go figure why I found this game so difficult to control. Oops...

@Kidfried: haha dear god, yeah it's kind of a necessity! I recommend getting used to using the shoulder button to run, as using square can get uncomfortable after a while.

Also, re your comment prior to editing about getting all the bandages, I wouldn't obsess over that straight away - I'm sure @Churchy might be able to elaborate, but I gather late on you can unlock characters with abilities such as double jump, which from what I could tell is at least v useful, and at times an absolute necessity for getting some of the bandages!

Yea, the game is a lot easier this way. This deals with most of my gripes with the game. I'm surprised I got this far without using the 'Run'-button. And I'm gonna put my bandage-hunting on hold for a while then.

@SteveButler2210: You're spot on. There are other characters to unlock that have different abilities like gliding and double jumping. As far as I remember, there are bandages you can't get without them.

Although I do wonder if there are new characters for the PS4 version. There was on the PC version.

Love this game. However, my friends and I have been having trouble comparing our best times for the individual levels, community times show up no problem (even though I am wondering about all those 0.00s), but the friends list always shows up blank, for all of us. Have you guys encountered this problem also by any chance?
