I was wondering how fallen order compares to Sekiro shadows die twice? I found the latter to be too difficult. I’m able to complete most games in normal mode but Bloodborne and Sekiro were just too difficult for this old guy’s reflexes. I’d not want to invest the $80 just to give up before the 1st boss fight.

@JohnnyShoulder Yesterday and this morning, I encountered two major boss fights. Both times, during my first attempts, I shaved their health bars down to about one third, maybe even 25% or so, before dying. Defeated both on my second attempt, by the skin of my teeth. It reminded me of your comment, about things being not unfair, but just barely achievable.

And y'know what? I absolutely loved both fights. They were incredible fun to play, tense and engaging, as well as spectacular slices of Star Wars. I might still get caught in an occasional bottleneck of regular enemies (particularly those that swarm me) but I think I've found my groove.

@ellsworth004 Nope, never played a Soulsbourne game before. They're not my thing, and I didn't think the combat would be my thing either (I don't like challenge). I'm definitely warming to it, as mentioned above, but I doubt I'd ever play this on anything harder than 'Jedi Knight' simply because I'm a Star Wars fan before I'm a gamer, so I'd rather just relax and experience an interactive story unfold. I'm glad you're having such a great time with it already! There's tons of great stuff to come, trust me!

@Winnipegoldcuff I can't compare to any other games, but I can tell you that Jedi: Fallen Order has a 'Story' difficulty mode, which apparently makes the combat very forgiving. There still might be a bit of a learning curve, but I'm sure it'd be playable. Or wait until you can find the game in a sale, perhaps?

@Arugula Yeah, where was Cal's hard hat and high-vis vest...?!

Glad to hear the combat is warming up to you @RogerRoger and you're enjoying it more... Are we going to hear about you beating it with a fishing rod or a banana?

... Though seeing as it's Star Wars... Maybe you could rig up a lightsabre to beat it?

@RogerRoger Sounds like your beginning to get the hang of it! People may baulk at the perceived difficulty and challenge, but the sense of achievement you get when you finally get past a boss or tricky section in unrivalled in gaming. Most of us can do it, it just takes a bit more patience and application than your standard fare.

@JohnnyShoulder @Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy @RogerRoger yeah, to continue the metaphor that got started over on the MGSV thread and continued with Death Stranding — if Kojima games are Marmite games, then Soulsborne games are Beer games. Meaning that nearly everyone’s first try of it leaves a bad taste in their mouth. Very few will say, “This dying and failing in this game all the time is great.” But if you stick with it, usually at the persistence of a large amount of peer pressure, eventually it starts to taste pretty good and gives you a real buzz. Then, the more you play it, the more it seems to take over your life until you crave the gameplay. Then your addiction to that feeling you get from it ruins your life and you’re sneaking in a session with it at every chance, just waiting for the next game to come out that has Soulsborne gameplay. All other game styles become boring to you.
Then you end up in a gutter somewhere holding a cardboard sign.

Was planning on waiting to get this but picked it up yesterday and just wow, this game is spectacular so far! I'm not a huge star wars guy but this might be my GOTY. Really fun to play and it's a perfect blend of a lot of games as others have said.

This game is starting to click with me now and as someone who isn't a big fan of this style of combat I'm now enjoying it against the stormtroopers, who are just brilliant in this game, I still don't care for fighting the wildlife though. Where this game really shines for me is the exploration and level design which is very reminiscent of Metroid Prime with surprisingly large areas and plenty of secrets to find. The best Star Wars game I've played in a long time and while I don't see it becoming my GOTY (there is a certain other game I'm playing at the moment which I don't see being topped) its probably the most outright fun I've had with a game this year

Older than I care to remember but have been gaming since owning a wooden Atari 2600 and played pretty much everything inbetween.

@RogerRoger im so hoping this sells very well so we can get a sequel, there is just so much that can be done with a single player action star wars game. For the first time since kotor im excited about star wars games!

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy @JohnnyShoulder Thanks, but it didn't go so well as I neared the end, alas. Full review (with very, very light and mostly inconsequential semi-spoilers) in the appropriate topic.

I hope @Th3solution won't mind that I borrowed and expanded his beer analogy!

@ellsworth004 It didn't beat Pokémon, at least one of the two versions, but came a very solid second in the UK physical charts, which I'm really pleased about. It deserves success and support, especially since we want more of these kinds of games and less of the online looter-shooter variety.

@carlos82 Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of fighting the wildlife, either. I've found that you can bypass many of the cuter creatures, though. Only the bigger enemies seem more aggressive.

@JohnnyShoulder About twenty-odd hours to beat the story, with another hour of exploring a large side area I deliberately left for last (to cheer me up in case I hated the end, which I didn't, difficulty aside). That being said, I've still got truckloads more of wandering and collecting to do before it's anywhere near 100% done.

I used to do this quite a lot; I'd use my annual leave to play new releases hard and fast, so it was a nice throwback to be able to shut myself away for three days, only taking breaks to charge my controller and headset (oh, and eat, I guess). But now my snacks are running low, my fridge is nearly empty, so I suppose I'd better check in with loved ones, go outside... y'know, all that other nonsense that doesn't have BD-1 in it... damn, I'm gonna miss him!

@RogerRoger Sure thing! It’s a loose analogy, but it’s what I thought of when I recollect my own Soulsborne experience. I recoiled at the combat of Dark Souls the first time around, but when I played Bloodborne I relented to keep with it because so many people encouraged me to do so and I ended up feeling that high that the Soulsborne devotees speak so commonly about. There is typically this huge threshold to enjoyment, in my opinion, which not everyone ends up having.
I’ve been craving another Soulsborne experience like Bloodborne for a while, but like the partyer who longs for the next brew, I’m hesitant to get into one until I’m ready.

@Th3solution Given that I've never played a Soulsborne before, nor do I drink beer, the picture it painted was pretty vivid. Seems like it takes a couple games to really find that high and so, unless there's a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order anytime soon, I don't think I'll ever experience it. Ah well.

For anybody curious about the development process of modern games, I recommend the Deluxe Edition content upgrade for Jedi: Fallen Order (probably whenever it goes on sale, mind). It contains several behind-the-scenes documentaries, some of which are just fluff but the main one of which, clocking in at about an hour long, is a worthwhile and surprisingly honest fly-on-the-wall account of Respawn's past year and a bit, working on and promoting the game. It doesn't dwell on some of the negative aspects, but at least it features them, which is refreshing enough.

I wish more games had making-of documentaries and extra features. I tend to skip them on movies, because the Hollywood process is quite well-known at this stage and, given the types of movies I enjoy, if you've seen one greenscreen you've seen 'em all. Games development is still a relative unknown to many, however, so I found this to be a somewhat educational watch.

@RogerRoger thanks for the info. It does sound interesting. Hopefully the price drops in the next month or so.

@ellsworth004 Whilst the structure of the game would easily allow for a DLC planet (just add it to the holotable, land and take a wander) I'm not sure there will be. EA and Respawn have made a big marketing point about how this is a "complete single-player experience" and, to be honest, the question of a sequel needs to be answered first. If the game continues to sell well, with such strong reviews and fan reception behind it, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody, somewhere had already started to think about where a next-generation Star Wars Jedi game could possibly go... after all, you know how the franchise loves its trilogies.

I'd love to see DLC, maybe a level/planet or two and more costumes (how many ponchos can you wear?). The Force Unleashed had some great DLC in my opinion. They added a few extra levels/missions, and a heap of costumer and skins. Nothing beats slicing through enemies and using force lightning as C-3PO.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic It can be, yes. There's a Story difficulty which makes it feel a lot closer to The Force Unleashed, in terms of being able to just run up to enemies and spam square until they fall over, but on all of the Jedi tier difficulties (Knight, Master and Grand Master) you're looking at a very deliberate, tactical, challenging combat system. I haven't played a Soulsborne game before, but plenty of better-informed folks around here have drawn comparisons based on what I've written.

@MattyHammo There's apparently a large amount of fans desperate for a chunk of DLC where you'd play as the Second Sister, hunting a Jedi across a new planet.

I'd just be happy if they unlocked all of Cal's various outfits for use, real or otherwise.
