Topic: Sonic Mania Physical Release For PS4 (All Current Gen Systems?)

I finished the game last night. It's definitely worth the price if you're a classic Sonic fan. The final zone and battle is something else. One of my favorite finales to a Sonic game for sure. I should note I didn't get the emeralds (only got 3), so that was just the basic ending.

I still stand by my earlier impression though. If you liked the Genesis/Mega Drive games, you'll like Mania, but I personally felt it's the same quality through and through. Not better or worse, just the same. That's not bad, of course.

Played a bit more today, it took me 7 minutes to get passed the brilliant hydrocity act 1, the second act was pretty good too but the boss whats that all about? I keep running out of air. I only had 2 lives and now Im back right at the start!!!

I think as the levels are really sprawling it would be nice to only have to replay the one level, my childhood self would be laughing at me right now - but the level design wants you to explore but Im worried in case I die and have to replay 10 minutes worth of game. I think I have to knock the square metal looking things into Robotnik and that spits out air - but apart from the first one it never gives me anymore air! I think its a bug as my game crashed shortly after, more likely Im not used to these crazy hard bosses.

@themcnoisy I'm ashamed to admit I was stuck on Oil Ocean for ages, the boss is a right pain. Then you lose 3 lives and you're right back to the start of Act 1 again lol.

I'm on the last level now, but ran out of lives on the last boss, so need to carefully replay 2 acts so I can get up to him again with (hopefully!) 3 lives.

I'm not very good at Sonic games, apparently!

I'm stuck on oil ocean it's a right pain but I love the game

@Ypmud If you're stuck on the boss, try going in to the battle with a fire bubble. It's pretty easy to use its launch attack to hit the boss from the platforms without getting hit by his arms and the stuff he fires out.

Oh right I've tried it as sonic and tails knuckles oh fml lol

@kyleforrester87 in the old sonic games keeping hold of a ring was important as you can work out the patterns of attack as you face off. The bosses in mania in act 2 all offer up different ways to die which is good for challenge, but the one ring philosophy doesnt hold true if your being squashed or needing air and I havent watched any videos on what im supposed to do.

It was like, ok im in water, i dodge these bricks, now i need air, wheres air? WHERES THE AIR? Gnbbmllgbb.....

loved that stage in hydrocity, i personally would of loved a remake of labrynth zone just to drive everyone potty

@themcnoisy For the Hydrocity act 2 boss, just focus on damaging the boss itself with those bombs.

@Ypmud Oil Ocean act 2 boss is significantly easier with a fire shield. As @kyleforrester87 says, the dash attack you can do in mid-air helps you avoid getting too up close, but it's also worth mentioning that the fire shield deflects those projectiles. It's not impossible to beat without the fire shield, but it makes it much easier if you can find one beforehand and hold onto it.

@Quintumply yeah ive beat it now. You have to hit the bombs that dont look like bombs which then hit robotnik and set off the air. Its pretty easy actually.

Then onto Tails plane! Woo woo.

@kyleforrester87 @Quintumply the oil ocean boss is from sonic 2 with a twist. I thought it was way easier than the previous under water boss fight. But I already knew the patterns to an extent.

Then fire cavern zone. Unsure were the palette came from as it looks terrible but its a mix of 2 of my favourite levels in design. Marble hill zone from sonic 1 and Hill top zone from sonic 2. Great stuff.

I played sonic 1 and 2 on my vita last night and theres such a gulf in quality to sonic mania, its staggering really how different but the same it is. The rings splashing out, all the pickups, the level flow everything so far has outdone it predessors for me. A worthy goty contender imo, better than both the wipeout and crash rereleases.

This might be my goty. It is so beautiful and fun.

I finished the game and started trophy hunting but ykes! It's REALLY insane that this hasn't got a platinum trophy, it has so many sub-goals and some of them are pretty demanding!

I am already hoping they will give us Sonic Mania 2 in the future, would love to see Labyrinth Zone and Angel Sanctuary Zone reimagined.

I am tempted to impulse buy this, possibly for my Switch. I never really played much Sonic other than at my cousins house and part of me wants to give it a go.

You can take it on the PS4 just hover over the game and scroll down and you'll find it, it's a good way to let Sega know how you feel about the game and Sonic The Hedgehog in general. They did ask a question about a limited edition physical version of the game

have you guys read the online manual for this game? SO well done...wish we could have a printed version of it. It really looks like an old instruction manual ...miss those.

@Feena yeah ive read it. I do miss manuals. The fact they have been replaced by tutorial introduction sections makes that pill even harder to swallow. Press x to jump :/
