Topic: PS Now on PS4 - worth it?

@kyleforrester87 has a couple of hang ups today. One corrupted my daughters Lego worlds playthrough!

Nascar 3 I was winning for the first time in career, froze game. Noooooo.

Anyway I'm quite happy with the service but it's filled with games I have played, on plus or wouldn't buy anyway. There are about 50 games I have an interest in and will cycle through.

@kyleforrester87 @themcnoisy I played a bit of Lone Survivor as teen. I got distracted, but it freaked me out back then. Heck, now I kind of want to boot up my PS3 and play through it.

@Jaz007 yeah, it’s a creepy game. I couldn’t play it tonight as intended, splitting head ache. I’m gunna hopefully play it and some Evil Within 2 tomorrow.

So here are my thoughts on PSNow with about 20 games played.

The streaming is OK, I primarily boot a game in streaming mode and if it's good - then download. The lag is bearable in some games, unusable in others. Action Henk is the perfect example - it's so difficult when streaming couldnt get passed the first boss, downloaded and steamrolled the first 20 levels and challenges. Lag is a weird one, you can't measure it with your eyes - more so the lack of success in fast paced games. Then you have downscaling resolution which makes the games look murky. So top tip - stream and if you like it download.

Games selection is OK-good, As I tend to purchase games on my radar the selection is OK. Having fun with some leftfield games like Nascar 3, Battle vs Chess and Action Henk which I would never have played otherwise. To someone who purchases less games it's a goldmine. One major oversight is the lack of sports games, it would be nice to have a good team sports game but there isn't anything available to play.

Price, Once my time runs out I will probably hold out (pick up ff7 remake and Ghost in the meantime) and see what new games get added. Then rebuy a 3 month script in November or December. So yes it's value for money.

@themcnoisy My brother and I play far too much Don Bradman Cricket 14 despite the fact we’re Scottish and therefore have absolutely 0 interest in cricket. It’s just a really fun multiplayer game when we don’t understand the rules, controls or honestly what to even do. It’s streaming only because it’s an old PS3 game and honestly, the quality isn’t as good because of the limits on the network due to lockdown. I’ve played loads of games on PS Now I never would have otherwise and I do think it’s great value for money. It should be even better next-gen if they’re trying to compete with Xbox directly.

@nessisonett 12 months is £42, 3 months is £17 on CD keys. Will let my sub lapse and buy the 3 month one when PS5 launches to see me through before the first pack in PS5s become available. £42 is great value - but then again I have about 20 decent games via psplus and my own purchases which will keep me entertained. So 3 months seems about right. Will take a look at Don Bradmans cricket!

@themcnoisy Honestly, Don Bradman’s Cricket is worth it for the commentators. Hearing “that one was a corker” in a thick Aussie accent 40 times a match is hilarious, especially when we have no idea how to even hit the ball.

@nessisonett Without trying to be too philosophical, out of all the games in the world - cricket has quite a lot of strategy outside of just whacking a ball. It's a good game unfortunately test cricket is not a great watch imo, 20/20 suits TV better but does away with much of the strategy of 5 day games.

One of the first projects I tried to make in Dreams (after my button mashing and card game) was a cricket bowling simulation. you can adjust the pace of the cricket ball, spin and having the individual areas have different characteristics based on a grid of a 30x20 space in front of the wicket. Which slightly changed characteristics when hit. I've always considered that cricket games focus on the wrong things and the wicket is the single most important element. Unfortunately the physics engine and my lack of talent ruined the experiment. So armed with the knowledge made my pool game instead - funky Timed challenge pool (162 likes last time I checked) but again I couldn't get cue physics to work and the table plays unrealistically so now it's more like super monkey ball. Worth a blast if you are ever on.

@themcnoisy 12 months is 40 quid and 3 months is 19.69 on Cdkeys, just so you are aware as I think you got your prices mixed up previously.

@JohnnyShoulder There was an offer when I browsed cdkeys quickly earlier to respond to @nessisonett for £17 for 3 months. It was an Italian code, but it doesn't matter which EU country you buy it from. The 12 month one was listed on the same page £42 from the same country, so you may be able to get a better price as I wasn't looking particularly. The prices fluctuate and often they sell out and remove it off the site.

Final thoughts on my ps now experience.

So my sub lapses on the 5th, I'm not going to start any more games so here's a quick heads up for anyone considering the service.

Value. PS now is great if you are only able to buy a few games a year. Considering you can get a 12 month sub for under £40 in the days of play promotions. The price of a new game for access to hundreds. That's great value.

Streaming. The streaming is better than I envisaged however the resolution can get really blurry. I won't hammer this point due to LockDown restrictions put in place by Sony, it often felt like I was playing in 700p. Hopefully 1080p can be hit regularly in the future.

Lag. I managed to finish Killzone 3 on normal difficulty streaming - Action Henk on the other hand was unplayable whilst streaming. Going forward I would only use streaming for games you have time to think. Reflex or precision gaming like rhythm action, 2d shoot em ups, 1v1 fighting games and old school platformers are really difficult to play. Input misses occur regularly during streaming as well. This does effect the fun more than I could explain.

PS4 games. Now this is my favourote part of the experiment. You can download the ps4 games which operate the same way as the digital games you own. The downside here is you need to download the games and the time that takes. So I would try a PS4 game via streaming and download if it had mileage. The PS4 download service is why I will come back later in the year.

Game quality. Okay so this is my take and others may argue, the vast majority of games on PSNow are yesterday's news with a few up to date and popular games sprinkled on top (f1 2019, control, spiderman, the golf club 2019). There is a lot of filler in the library after the highlights. That's not to say you can't enjoy the games - you can and I did - its mining for diamonds. An example of this is the indie selection, all of them were originally released in 2016 or earlier (from what I can see). So the quality proposition does significantly decrease once you have played the top tier games. Without offering games in a similar fashion to gamepass I would like a more up to date back catalouge, rather than a list of games which don't sell anymore.

Summary, PS Now is worth a gander. Streaming is OK - much more useful as a way to try before you download. The game selection is nerfed after the surface marketed games. If you have the open mind to enjoy a plethora of old titles this is a Pandora box of fun, if you prefer newer stuff it will wear thin fast. For the price of one new game you can't complain but the fuzzy resolution and random crashes are disappointing in the 4k age. With a few improvements hopefully streaming will become a legitimate way to game - as it stands its too much of a downgrade in both lag and fun to recommend. The download option available to PS4 games is the reason I will be back later in the year, not really what the service is marketed as.

Accidently bought a years subscription to this a couple of weeks ago when I was attempting to buy a years sub to PS Plus on CDKeys.

For £40, ie the same price or cheaper than a game I've already got my monies worth by being invested in Spiderman finally. If I can find another game or 2 I like after that within the next 12 months I'll class that as a win.

@hotukdeals No true, I paid for 30 quid for a year and already made my money back in month 2 only playing PS4 games. This will different for everyone obviously.

I would say it's not worth it if you live In Europe just took the trial and the amount of games and quality is shocking compared to American , granted you can't blame sony it's the greedy company's that have the rights to games in Europe who either don't want them or plus or are asking too much
