This weekend I will be taking my PS4 to a video game console maintenance man. Of course, some of the stuff I could have done myself, but I rather have someone less chaotic than me tearing my beloved apart. I just hope replacing the paste, cleaning the heat sink, etc. will help reduce the noise until PS5 comes around.

Never been to someone like that. Anyone of you ever did that? Or do you take them apart yourself?

I did some maintenance on my PS4 basic by the way, but ultimately it hardly changed anything.

@Kidfried I’ve replaced the hard drives on both the PS4, PS3 and PS4 pro.

I also attempted to replace the power supply on my PS3 when it stopped working. The new one I got didn’t fit but when I put it all back together it started working again.

I’ve never done maintenance on a PlayStation that was operating correctly. It just seems like an unnecessary risk.

I've only upgraded the internal hdd on my OG PS4 @Kidfried. I think the only thing that helps reduce the sound of the fan is to get a better chassis for the console. That is why the later models of the OG and pro models are quieter.

Nah I don’t think I’d bother doing that to be honest, in fact as long as it lasted until after FF7 I’d probably sit tight until PS5 dropped off my PS4 gave up the ghost.

It’s always worth doing a bit of maintenance and it’s nice to keep your possessions running well but a full time job and stuff around the house keeps me plenty busy enough. How people deal with kids I just have no idea 😂

@Kidfried I’ll be curious to see how this goes for you. I’ve never done the extensive maintenance you refer to. Pretty sure I’d mess up my system. I have seen some YouTube videos that make it look easy though.

I have to admit to not taking very good care of my console. I occasionally have to take part of the shell off to tighten the disc eject screw when my PS4 goes into one of its disc ejecting phases and may well give the insides a blast with compressed air while I’m there but that’s pretty much it.

I did take my PS3 to someone before but that’s when it YLOD’d on me.

I've tried cleaning out my Pro with compressed air and that before and honestly it made no difference to the sound.

Obviously if you go down the route of changing pastes and stuff that could perhaps help.

My PS4 Pro has always been loud at certain points so I'm sceptical of it being anything to do with it being dusty inside.

@Th3solution TBF he is not doing it himself but taking it to a professional to do it, so there will be less risk in doing it. But I personally would spend any money on that kinda stuff this last in a console generation.

@Kidfried How did it go?

I don't really think the thermal paste is much of an issue, but a good clean of the heat sink itself and looking at the fan would be worthwhile.

@KALofKRYPTON I had a nice trip.

The guy has made a living out of repairing consoles since the launch of the PSP, so he was pretty knowledgeable.

I came in at Sunday at 10:30, an half hour past its opening time, and was already the third one of the day bringing in a PS4 Pro due to the loud fans. He told me that since a few months that's where a large share of his work consists of.

He opened, cleaned, replaced the paste and closed my console within 15 minutes. Something that surely would have taken me a lot longer.

Was it worth 50 euro versus doing it myself? That's hard to say, but I loved being able to let a professional do it for me, instead of having this constant worry of "will my console still work".

My PS4 Pro isn't perfectly silent, as the fans turn on when booting up a big game. But I mean... that's night and day compared to how it used to be. Even when I played until late last night and had to turn the volume down a lot, I didn't hear the fan over my game's sound at all. I used to have to wear noise cancelling headphones when playing late.

So, at the moment I'm really happy. I'm pretty confident that my PS4 Pro in time will become loud again, but probably not before the PS5 launches at the end of this year.

@Kidfried Cool.
Glad it worked out.
