So I played the demo of it, which was a bit so-so since the demo took place quite some time into the story so it felt a bit confusing for me. But what I played of it was fun, it felt like a mix of Final Fantasy and Trails of Cold Steel, with real-time movement around the battlefield as you choose who to hit, which I thought was incredibly cool.

Question is though how long the game is, because I am Setsuna was 20 hours and that's a bit short for a JRPG in general and for €40 nonetheless. Lost Sphear looks like it may be much longer than that? I really want to get this game at launch next week when it releases on the 23rd here in Europe, but it's hard to justify for €40-50 if it's the same length as Setsuna.

So is anyone planning on getting this game at launch?

@KratosMD I remember Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana both barely hit the 20 hours and they're the two classic Square RPG's, I'd say. With I Am Setsuna, as well as Lost Sphear, Square takes a lot of inspiration from these (and other) classic titles. I think that's why you shouldn't be surprised they're shorter than today's JRPG's.

Nothing about this screams day one, I was kind of burnt with the average I Am Setsuna and this doesn't look (or seem, I played the demo) much better really. There are plenty of great RPGS, and tons of average ones. This doesn't look like it'll be beyond average, so.. why bother?

Still, I'm not saying never - the right time at the right price and we've got a deal no doubt!

I am looking forward to Squares Octopath Traveler, however. A classic RPG that seems to do something fresh - 8 main playable characters, who's stories intertwine and most importantly seems to have some real heart.

Sorry about the voice over.

Just finished watching the PlayStation Access live stream on Lost Sphear.
I love the soundtrack. It's fantastic.
The game though...
The Access team had an extended demo and the gameplay didn't really do anything for me. It didn't look particularly great either. Hard to justify £40 on it.

I'm going to pass. I'd rather pick up Secret of Mana for the Vita next month.

@Kidfried Well I'm not as surprised of the length as I am with the pricing. Even if they could lower the price to €30 I'd be more than happy to buy it at launch. It really looks like a game I'd enjoy; fresh gameplay, decent graphics, a pretty serious story for a JRPG (if I should base it on the demo) etc.

@kyleforrester87 I mean, people are constantly yammering about how Squeenix should go back to its roots and make more turn based JRPGs instead of real time and here we are getting them and nobody seems to care? I don't know, people should put their money where their mouth is I feel like. Maybe then we can actually get "more than average" games.

@Fight_Teza_Fight You should try out the demo on the PS Store and see if you like it. I thought it was pretty good and it would also give you a sample taste of the mix of turn based and real time gameplay you'll find in ToCS.

Played the demo and, while I don't like to be harsh, it came across as aggressively generic.

As @kyleforrester87 said, Project Octopath Traveler seems VERY cool, and is a good example of how to create a properly old-school JRPG that also feels fresh in the ways that matter.

@KratosMD well clearly SE have teams who can make better classically inspired JRPGs, just look at Octopath Traveler and the Bravely games. This just looks pretty bland in comparison. I'm sure it will be okay but there are better alternatives I think.

Still, at the right price in the future I may get it.
