Topic: Laptop's screen as monitor for PS4.

Hi, so I'd like to play games using laptop's screen.

1. I can't use Remote Play - requires internet connection and too much lags.

2. Maybe I can use PS Vita without internet, but not sure how to connect to PS4 if I can't see PS4's menu to setup, so I guess I still need a TV to do everything.

3. The best options I think to buy portable monitor or capture card. These are pros and cons for both:
a) Monitor:

  • USB powered, you can use portable chargers;
  • Works with any HDMI without drivers;
  • Picture really bad, not enough brightness;
  • Take too much space in backpack (as laptop almost).

b) Capture Card:

  • Small and light (very important cause I can't fit in my backpack everything I want, max. 10 kg);
  • I can have much better picture on Laptop's screen using such card than portable monitor gives;
  • Didn't use before so have no idea about lags, I don't need recording;
  • I don't know if possible to connect everything if I can't see PS4 menu (I mean it's just plug and play or I have to setup or install something on PS4).

I hope you understand my question. Thanks for advices.

@Tasuki Because I can't. I travel a lot, all I can have with me is laptop and PS4 in backpack. Laptop for work, I don't play games on it, besides I love PS4 games.

@uniquejake As far as Vita is concerned you can't perform the initial PS4 setup via remote play but if you set up it there is a choice on the remote play menu for "direct connection". This is lagless because it connects Vita and PS4 directly, no internet needed, just like the Wii U. However the lack of buttons make some games unplayable (you use the touch screen for them). In the first years some games like Driveclub had optimized remote play controls but recent like spiderman don't. If you are interested there is an official Hori peripheral that adds the missing buttons

@belmont Ok, I didn't think about it, I want to use Dualshock 4 and playing on a bigger screen is much better than on the Vita's. So let's talk about 2 options left (unless you know something else, like newer laptops with HDMI Input) - portable monitor and capture card. The first I have tried - just plug and play as regular monitor, but brightness is not enough, in a day is very difficult to play. I had GAEMS M155, both models except the newest one. I really want to try capture card, but I'm afraid of that lag, I don't want any freezes. Some of them have pass through feature maybe that means I don't have to do setup just plug the cable, otherwise I have to set it up being blind.

@uniquejake There are some older and expensive Alienware laptops with HDMI input but I don't remeber the models and I don't think they performed that great. As far as capture cards are concerned I don't know any details.

Some years ago I had a USB TV Card that allowed RGB input and I used it to play my PS2 without lag. I don't know if there are newer ones with HDMI input.

@belmont I know about those laptop, only few models and too old. So it's like external TV tuner?
