Topic: Kick Off Revival --OT--

Finally preordered Kick Off Revival for the measly sum of £12.99. This thread is to get some games on, knowing virtually nothing about the release other than I was rubbish at the original I'm hoping others are in the same boat.

I was always a Sensible Soccer fan so can not go to the other side even after all these years.

@dryrain: Yes you can. I loved swos, best footy game available until international superstar soccer on the n64. I always found kickoff really tough - but I was pants at controlling the ball, willing to relearn it for only £13 though.

I was a huge kick off 2 fan on the Amiga and found it equally tough and addictive. Sign me up . Hope the refs remain the same as the original too.

I'll pre warn you though if you haven't already played it, the game isn't all that.
There are are no options whatsoever, can't change the duration, pitch type, ref, weather etc.
There are no yellow or red cards.
Single player is the current Euro Championship only, with only the those teams.
No club teams, team or player editor, no leagues.
Online is hard to find an opponent (prob early days i know), but you end up playing a bot team, usually 'lee-o-mac' which gets boring after 3-4 matches, then when I finally found another human, i was 3-0 up and they disconnected lol.
Then there are the odd glitches, you will experience them and they will annoy the crap outta you when they happen.
But I paid £7.99 for the thing so I'll get in a few more online matches before I uninstall it unless an update comes along soon.
Well that's my rant over, still would like to kick your butt though

Haha, is it any good? We should have a review up soon, but I'm not sure what to expect.

I've only played it for a couple hours but the online matches will draw me back for a little while as long as there are human opponents available. It's just so basic, I won the Euro's on my second attempt and I'm far from excelling at it as it really is as hard as the original if not harder with analogue stick control, and that was single player finished.
The game I imagine has been rushed out to coincide with the tournament and it really shows.
Dino Dini has a You Tube channel that explains a few things, especially within the comments section in which he states most of the missing features I mentioned here are coming, and I hope they do.
With those apparent updates and the toughness of mastering the game will keep it alive longer me's thinks.

I understood the need for 1 button play on 8 and 16 bit home computers, but the limitations using only 1 button today are stupid. You end up fighting with the controller. The close control button is the same as shoot. Madness.

I didn't go into it in any detail when I was writing that review, but Kick Off was one of the first games I ever owned. We had it on the Commodore 64 when I was like five or six, and I have super fond memories of it. I used to play it with my little brother relentlessly, and to be honest, we never had another football game we played that extensively until probably ISS 98 on the original PlayStation.

With that in mind, this game was a major disappointment. It's mental that Revival is actually a step back from what Kick Off was all those years ago. I get that they're adding yellow cards and whatnot into the game in updates, but rushing a game out before it's even close to done is a practice that needs to stop. What if someone buys a physical copy but doesn't have an Internet connection? Their game is just great forever?

It's super annoying because with some extra modes and some options and an actual training mode that teaches you how to like, you know, do absolutely anything in the game, it wouldn't be anywhere near as bad. It might have even been a positive review. We're not talking a 9 or a 10 here, but at least much better than this. It's a total rush job, and it isn't good enough, and people shouldn't be paying for the game. They had a release a spreadsheet days after the game came out just to teach people how to play it. That's unacceptable.

Fundamentally though, I don't think the game is a write off. And if you played the original games then this one plays largely the same, and after the updates, it will probably be on par with the old games in terms of gameplay.

@johncalmc: i will never preorder indie games again. Thats the Dini Dino legacy. £15 retail for that pile of rubbish, the game is terrible as you mentioned in ur review - Moreso I was hyped.

It's that old thing about a bad game being bad forever but a delayed game one day being great, isn't it? A little more thought and care, and even if the game wasn't a world beater it would likely have kept the Kick Off fans happy. As it is it's a disaster, and the implications are that even Kick Off fans will likely be wary about picking up another game in the series. Not that that will probably happen now anyway.

Maybe you'd be willing to write a short feature about it in a few months? Just assessing if the game has improved, or something.
