With God of War releasing on April 20th, its time we had a thread for it.

I am not a God of War fan but from what I have seen and read, I had to pre-order the limited edition...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Never been a fan of the series myself but I do realize it's really popular. I more then likely won't be getting it as I have other games on my radar.

Will defo be getting, whether it will be on day 1 I'm not entirely sure yet.

Played a couple of the previous games and was not overly keen on em. So I'm glad for the change of pace for this new entry.

@Tasuki I never like the button bashing combo building games but this looks to have more depth and story than others. To me, it seems that its more a 'reboot' than a traditional God of War game made for the new generation. From what I have seen and read, they have converted someone who would have said they would never by a GoW game to someone who has pre-ordered.

I have to admit, the trailers have made me more excited. It’s so hard to judge from a trailer though; all games look awesome on their trailer. But previously I was not planning to get GoW until probably many months down the road but now I’m considering buying day 1. I dunno, maybe. Sometimes i tend to be an impulse buyer about games.

@Th3solution The trailers, especially the reveal, looked great but for me it was also the information from the devs about the game, the changes to combat etc that actually persuaded me. I had fears that the trailers were not showing the combo meter to show more of the game without those annoying and hideous combo counters etc popping up. The interviews and information was what convinced me but the trailers also had the impact of drawing me in.

@Tasuki I'm sorry, but can you show me the rule that says we can't revive threads? Community Rules

The only unwritten rule we have at NLife is that we can revive any thread provided it's a game or console specific thread. So no need to lock it. Because let's be honest, what's the point in locking a thread and starting a new one on the same topic?

Th3solution

@BAMozzy Yeah, the interviews also really have sold me too. The way they describe the character development aspects and story seems to have a bigger focus than in the past games. And I agree, in general I’m not a fan of those combo meters in games. In the other GoW installments they weren’t quite as bad as other games, but the HUD being littered with the combo count can be distracting. Probably Kratos axe is going to glow brighter or change colors as you string combos a la Shadow of Mordor, but we’ll see. Prior GoW games were fun, but I’m ready for a more immersive story and character driven epic experience. 🤞🏼

@Octane It's been a standing rule for years. I am sure you know that. Also I am sure you know that it's also against the rules here to discussing moderating issues in public. Now please lets not derail the thread any further. Next time please use a contact form.

Thank you for understanding

Initially was going to skip the game because while I didn't mind the change in direction of the narrative (the series needed to grow up a bit in that sense), the change away from the traditional style of combat to a more Naughty Dog style game wasn't what I thought I wanted out of God of War. However, there were a series of videos posted on Game Informer's youtube channel that helped convince me there's still going to be enough respect paid to the series' tradition and even as an older fan of the series who's questioning the changes, I want to give the developers a fair chance here, so I've gone ahead and pre-ordered it. Santa Monica did bring back Cory Barlog and given his history with the franchise I'm sure there will be something great whether you're a long-time fan or new to GoW.

Have always been a huge fan of God Of War games and also one of the few that even enjoyed Ascension so it's pretty much a no brainer that I'll be buying this..day one.

@Tasuki I've used it before, but never got an answer unfortunately.

Anyway, as I was saying before the previous thread got closed, Cory Barlog has confirmed there will be optional bosses! I think we already new about optional areas, and the fact that they wanted to reward exploration. We now we also know there will be optional boss fights. I'm interested to see how the game is structured. I'm thinking of the Western Ghats chapter from Lost Legacy on steroids.

@Th3solution https://www.dualshockers.com/god-of-war-combat-images/ is quite an interesting look at the combat and what Atreus also brings to that combat. The changes have made the game more tactical, added more depth etc. The closer the camera is now has also changed the combat too. You no longer can see enemies coming from behind so you have audio clues and be much more aware of your positioning making combat more tactical and more deliberate.

It was an interesting read. I was also pleased to hear that the game-play section where Atreus was constantly chatting during the fight, which is meant to give Atreus a sense of purpose, be more useful and relevant, has been toned down too. Its still part of the game of course but not as irritating as it was in that game-play. It was good to hear that they responded to feedback and very quickly too...

Easily my most anticipated game of the year. I love all the games, but Ascension made it clear that GoW did need a change.
I'm all for the idea of having Kratos as the ever present face of PlayStation. Whenever things get stale you throw him into a new mythology and mess with the formula a little bit.

Hack n' Slash never defined God of War to me. God of War to me is all about epic boss fights and tearing Gods apart limb from limb and I'm sure I'll get that from this game.

We might not get anymore sex mini games in 2018, but maybe that's for the best. Maybe...

@BAMozzy Thats a very interesting read. I hadn’t realized they have added a shield for Kratos which will change up the gameplay tactics. And it sounds like Atreus is a more powerful companion in combat that I realized. I was imagining him being like Ellie where it’s mostly they you function as an escort and protector but the article indicates his powers are an essential part of successful survival. Pretty cool stuff.

@KratosMD Could be. My understanding though, about them talking about putting Kratos into different mythologies is that he is here to stay.

However, I absolutely believe that there will/should be a final confrontation between father and son (maybe not in this game though). Kind of like in Pokemon Gold/Silver on top of mount Silver when you fight Red (the player in the previous game).
Wouldn't surprise me if Kratos came out on top though . He's got got the track record.

If the game proves to be a success, I think Sony will be far less reluctant to move on. The series had dropped and maybe Sony felt that Kratos was better off dying - better to start something 'new' than flogging a dead horse. Naughty Dog felt that the rules they set up with Nathan Drake was limiting and that they couldn't realistically move his story arc on indefinitely. It's clear that 4 was a struggle narratively and they had to shoehorn a brother in to add a new 'dynamic' to the game - the battle between the blood relative and his wife. Honouring his promise to his brother or his promise to his wife. Nathan Drake is probably more of a face of Playstation in recent years.

If this game really does well, Kratos could well go on to more games. Atreus could I guess take over or even provide a 'spin-off' once he reaches adult hood. You could have an AC: Origins type open world Action RPG with Atreus as the lead, and Kratos in games more like this God of War with different mythologies. Instead of just making the same game as such with Kratos or Atreus, this could provide two different avenues. The vision I have would put Atreus in a big open world with NPC's, side quests and helping people - if anyone has played AC: Origins, if you substitute Bayek out and increase the mythical element - improve the boss fights like the Anubis fight and have demi-gods, mythical creatures etc mixing with human/normal NPC's etc, side quests, alternative pathways (will Atreus end up being a saviour for humans against the 'gods' wrath or side with gods and maybe be feared by humans - almost like picking between Sorcerers or non-humans in the witcher series and how that impacts on the world). Anyway, Point is, this could open up a new direction, a spin off rather than just replace one lead with another...

@Fight_Teza_Fight That’s really awesome. Would have been fun to see that in person. They are really marketing this game to a broader audience I think. The other GoW games were obviously pretty popular, but slightly niche to the harder core gamer and with this, they are clearly trying to get everyone excited about it. An NBA game will be largely males age 15-30 which is a target demographic, but there are a wide variety of people there. I notice they didn’t show Kratos tearing an enemies head off.

Fight_Teza_Fight

@Th3solution Yeah they are definitely marketing the game to a wider audience. It’ll be interesting to see how Europe takes to it, as GoW hasn’t been a huge seller over there.

The marketing is really heating up now. I’m expecting to see Kratos & Son on the side of buses any day now .
